Associations Of Maternal Plasma Free Fatty Acid Profiles With Markers Of Inflammation In Healthy Pregnant Women, Xinhua Chen, Thomas P. Stein, Theresa O. Scholl, Robert A. Steer May 2018

Associations Of Maternal Plasma Free Fatty Acid Profiles With Markers Of Inflammation In Healthy Pregnant Women, Xinhua Chen, Thomas P. Stein, Theresa O. Scholl, Robert A. Steer

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

We investigated the relationship between maternal fasting plasma free fatty acid (FFA) profiles and markers of inflammation (MOI) (IL-6, 8, 10, TNF-α, granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GMCSF) and resistin) in healthy pregnant women during early gestation (week 16).

These data suggested that maternal functional long-chain FFAs influence inflammatory response during normal pregnancy. Changes in specific FFA composition may reduce low-grade inflammation and inflammation related poor pregnancy outcomes and complications.

Development Of Novel Dual Inhibitor Of Chemokine Receptor 4 And Mcl-1 Against Multiple Myeloma, Kuntal Bhowmick, Kristy K. Patel, Suman Pathi, Subash Jonnalagadda, Tulin Budak-Alpdogan, Manoj K. Pandey

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a neoplastic plasma-cell disorder. This is characterized by clonal proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone-marrow (BM) microenvironment, monoclonal protein in blood or urine, and associated organ dysfunction. The treatment options approved by FDA are immune-modulatory agents, proteasome inhibitors, and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). Unfortunately, MM remains uniformly fatal owing to intrinsic or acquired drug resistance and the median survival time is 3 to 5 years. Thus, there is a great need for novel strategies to combat MM.

The intimate relationship of myeloma cells to BM microenvironment is “hallmark of myeloma”. The homing of …

The Unity Project: Camden Community Health Center Building Authentic & Impactful Relationships Through The Ask-First Model, Christian Diliberto, Ruchi Shah, Patrick J. Tempera

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Last spring, the Camden Community Health Center (CCHC) launched the Unity Project, an initiative aimed at fostering relationships with various Camden, New Jersey organizations to not only educate community members about our services, but also to collaborate with them on improving Camden’s health. Although the CCHC has been in Camden for over 15 years, local organizations were unaware of our existence. There was also a similar disconnect among these organizations themselves. The goal of the Unity Project is to work towards affecting long-term change by forming authentic and impactful relationships with organizations that are already doing meaningful work.

AIMS: Type 2 diabetes is associated with endothelial dysfunction leading to cardiovascular disease. CD34+ endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPCs) are responsible for endothelial repair and neo-angiogenesis and can be used as a cardiovascular disease risk biomarker. This study investigated whether the addition of saxagliptin, a DPP-IV inhibitor, to metformin, may reduce cardiovascular disease risk in addition to improving glycemic control in Type 2 diabetes patients.

METHODS: In 12 week, double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial, 42 subjects already taking metformin 1-2 grams/day were randomized to placebo or saxagliptin 5 mg. Subjects aged 40-70 years with diabetes for < 10 years, with no known cardiovascular disease, BMI 25-39.9, HbA1C 6-9% were included. We evaluated EPCs number, function, surface markers and gene expression, in addition to arterial stiffness, blood biochemistries, resting energy expenditure, and body composition parameters. A mixed model regression to examine saxagliptin vs placebo, accounting for within-subject autocorrelation, was done with SAS (p < 0.05).

RESULTS: Although there was no significant …

“But You Still Have The Same Insecurities”—Navigating Personal Trainer And Client Body Image Through Emotional And Aesthetic Labor, Ellen Penn Berry May 2018

“But You Still Have The Same Insecurities”—Navigating Personal Trainer And Client Body Image Through Emotional And Aesthetic Labor, Ellen Penn Berry

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

While research on personal trainers’ emotional (controlling the portrayal of own emotions to produce an emotional response in another person) and aesthetic ("looking the part") labor has been conducted, no research currently exists on personal trainer body image. Research demonstrates that body image concerns of athletes and exercising populations may differ from that of the general population. This is an important area to examine due to the personal trainer’s “quasi-professional” role as “cultural intermediaries” between healthcare and exercise science professionals and the average consumer and their provision of “expert service work” to clients, combining emotional labor through service work and …

Distractions In Hearing: Measuring Impulsivity In Service Members With A Mtbi, Kathleen Margaret Chopra May 2018

Distractions In Hearing: Measuring Impulsivity In Service Members With A Mtbi, Kathleen Margaret Chopra

Dissertations, 2014-2019

One of the cognitive symptoms associated with the diagnosis of a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the degradation of focus and attention. This pilot study was designed to quantify examples of such capabilities in Service Members diagnosed with mTBI and to compare their abilities to peers without an mTBI diagnosis. Specifically, we compared participant groups on their false alarm rates and thresholds for contralateral and informational masking tasks to document the participants’ ability to focus and detect an auditory stimulus in the presence of distracting maskers. In this study, comparing the overall performance of Service Members, with and without …

Development Of A Questionnaire To Assess Attitudes Toward Hearing Aids, Corinne O'Shaughnessy May 2018

Development Of A Questionnaire To Assess Attitudes Toward Hearing Aids, Corinne O'Shaughnessy

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Many reasons have been postulated as to why persons with hearing loss are reluctant to engage in the hearing rehabilitation process. While not the only determinant, an individual's attitudes toward hearing loss and hearing aids have been shown to affect adoption of amplification adversely and eventual outcomes of hearing aid use. Several attempts have been made to develop test instruments for attitudes toward hearing loss, but nothing specific to attitudes toward hearing aids or hearing aid technology. The primary objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess attitudes toward hearing aids using the ABC model of attitude …

Objective Differences Between Premium And Mid-Level Digital Hearing Aids, Chelsea C. Barry May 2018

Objective Differences Between Premium And Mid-Level Digital Hearing Aids, Chelsea C. Barry

Dissertations, 2014-2019

This ongoing study compared premium and mid-level hearing aids from major manufacturers on noise reduction and general electroacoustic characteristics. The findings of this study will contribute to the scarce independent literature evaluating currently available hearing aid technology. Measuring the overall gain reduction in response to a steady state noise can objectively test noise reduction. However, such a method does not specifically test a hearing aid’s ability to reduce speech in specific narrow frequency bands. Hanline & Rout (2008) developed a set of stimuli to evaluate multichannel noise reduction algorithms more precisely. We used these stimuli to test noise reduction abilities …

Envelope-Following Responses And The Effects Of Cochlear Delay, Nicole Jones May 2018

Envelope-Following Responses And The Effects Of Cochlear Delay, Nicole Jones

Dissertations, 2014-2019

There is great interest in developing clinical applications for phase-locked auditory potentials that are elicited by human speech. A common analysis of vowel-elicited responses is to analyze the envelope-following response (EFR) amplitude at the fundamental frequency (F0) of the eliciting vowel. For this study, we systematically examined the effect of modeled vowel formants on EFR amplitude. EFRs were elicited using a fundamental frequency of 103 Hz, representative of a male speaker’s fundamental frequency. Stimuli consisted of two simultaneously presented sinusoidally amplitude-modulated tones with the same F0. One carrier frequency was fixed at 353 Hz, representing a first formant frequency; the …

Antimicrobial Activity, Biofilm Disruption Capabilities, And Synergistic Interactions Of Novel Amphiphiles, Stephanie Sharpes May 2018

Antimicrobial Activity, Biofilm Disruption Capabilities, And Synergistic Interactions Of Novel Amphiphiles, Stephanie Sharpes

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The increased prevalence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria requires development of new control strategies. Preventative measures such as development of disinfectants and antiseptics with faster killing and anti-biofilm capabilities would help limit the spread of resistance and reduce the incidence of hospital acquired infection. Several series of novel amphiphiles, including three bis-cationic, four tris-cationic and three tetra-cationic double tailed amphiphile series, as well as one hexa-cationic, triple tailed amphiphile series were synthesized and tested for antimicrobial properties. The amphiphiles in this study were previously tested for MIC value against several Gram-positive and negative bacterial species. This work expanded on the antimicrobial …

“We Make Death Look Pretty”: A Qualitative Study Analyzing Reported Effects Of Compassion Fatigue On Hospice Nurse-Patient Communication, Katherine Harville May 2018

“We Make Death Look Pretty”: A Qualitative Study Analyzing Reported Effects Of Compassion Fatigue On Hospice Nurse-Patient Communication, Katherine Harville

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Rationale: Compassion fatigue is present in multiple nursing fields, but hospice poses a significant threat to nurses working within that specific environment. This is due to their consistent proximity with patient suffering, death and dying, and constant communication with patients regarding their death. The hospice nurse-patient relationship requires a deeper connection between nurse and patient which often results in consistent emotional labor for hospice nurses, further amplifying the threat of compassion fatigue. While the effects of compassion fatigue can manifest in many forms, it is typically characterized by a nurses’ decline in job satisfaction, which they do not tend to …

Tumor Cure By Radiation Therapy And Checkpoint Inhibitors Depends On Pre-Existing Immunity., Marka R Crittenden, Lauren Zebertavage, Gwen Kramer, Shelly Bambina, David Friedman, Victoria Troesch, Tiffany Blair, Jason R Baird, Alejandro F Alice, Michael J Gough

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Radiation therapy is a source of tumor antigen release that has the potential to serve as an endogenous tumor vaccination event. In preclinical models radiation therapy synergizes with checkpoint inhibitors to cure tumors via CD8 T cell responses. To evaluate the immune response initiated by radiation therapy, we used a range of approaches to block the pre-existing immune response artifact initiated by tumor implantation. We demonstrate that blocking immune responses at tumor implantation blocks development of a tumor-resident antigen specific T cell population and prevents tumor cure by radiation therapy combined with checkpoint immunotherapy. These data demonstrate that this treatment …

Understanding The Relationship Between The Neurologic Pupil Index And Constriction Velocity Values., Ifeoluwa Shoyombo, Venkatesh Aiyagari, Sonja E Stutzman, Folefac Atem, Michelle Hill, Stephen A Figueroa, Chad Miller, Amber Howard, Daiwai M Olson May 2018

Understanding The Relationship Between The Neurologic Pupil Index And Constriction Velocity Values., Ifeoluwa Shoyombo, Venkatesh Aiyagari, Sonja E Stutzman, Folefac Atem, Michelle Hill, Stephen A Figueroa, Chad Miller, Amber Howard, Daiwai M Olson

Neuroscience Articles

The pupillary light reflex (PLR) describes the response when light hits the retina and sends a signal (cranial nerve II) to the Edinger-Westphal Nucleus which via cranial nerve III results in pupillary constriction. The Neurological Pupil indexTM (NPi) and pupil constriction velocity (CV) are two distinct variables that can be observed and measured using a pupillometer. We examine NPi and CV in 27,462 pupil readings (1,617 subjects). NPi values < 3.0 and a CV < 0.8 mm/sec were considered abnormal. Regression was used to clarify the effect of pupil size and repeated measures. An odds ratio of abnormal CV given normal NPi (and vice versa) was computed using the glimmixed (SAS) regression. Of 27,462 readings, 49.2% revealed bilaterally normal NPi wtih brisk CV, and 10.8% revealed bilaterally abnormal NPi and slow CV; 9.1% with unilaterally normal NPi and brisk CV where the opposite pupil had an abnormal NPi and slow CV. The remaining 30.9% revealed that one or both PLR had either a normal NPi with slow CV, or abnormal NPi with brisk CV. Brisk CV does not rule out an abnormal PLR; slow CV does not rule in abnormal PLR. Practitioners should consider these implications when interpreting pupillometry readings.
