Implementing High-Fidelity Simulation To Meet Undergraduate Clinical Requirements, Tammy Lynn Mccoy May 2018

Implementing High-Fidelity Simulation To Meet Undergraduate Clinical Requirements, Tammy Lynn Mccoy

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Increased demand for clinical experiences, lack of clinical sites, and shortages of qualified nursing faculty are reasons undergraduate nursing programs are seeking to utilize simulation to meet student learning needs. High-fidelity simulation (HFS) gives students the

opportunity to develop technical skills, enhance critical thinking skills, and apply theoretical concepts to clinical presentations in a controlled, safe environment. There is mounting interest in replacing traditional clinical hours with simulated practice experiences, particularly in specialty nursing areas like obstetrics. Despite literature supporting HFS and the positive effects of its use in undergraduate nursing education, faculty remain unfamiliar with the process of integrating …

Interleukin-1 Beta (Il-1Β) Gene Polymorphisms In Pre-Treatment Orthodontic Patients Exhibiting Short Root Anomaly (Sra), Satyaprasad Nayak

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Root resorption is a frequent unwanted occurrence during orthodontic treatment. Biological factors include the quantity of specific inflammatory mediators, growth factors, and hormones as well as an individual’s specific alleles for the genes encoding these mediators. Studies have shown an association between external apical root resorption (EARR) and the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at +3954 of the IL-1β gene. Studies have also shown associations between chronic periodontitis and IL-1β gene polymorphisms in the region of +3954, -511 and -31. All previous studies to date, have evaluated genetic factors and root resorption in orthodontic patients in-treatment or post-orthodontic treatment. This study …

Educating Perinatal Nurses To Promote Bonding Techniques And Increase Support Of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Parents, Kandice Perez May 2018

Educating Perinatal Nurses To Promote Bonding Techniques And Increase Support Of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Parents, Kandice Perez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

NICU treatment team members and perinatal nurses must strive to educate parents and promote parent/infant bonding; failure to do so can result in poor emotional well-being of the parent. Supportive behaviors of nursing staff, and the promotion of bonding techniques inside and outside of the NICU setting can provide aid to parents throughout their NICU journey. However, perinatal nurses are often not provided the necessary knowledge and skills to promote parental bonding, emotional support, empowerment, and education to parents whose infants are unexpectedly admitted to the NICU. Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project was to increase perinatal nurses’ knowledge …

Prostate Cancer Survival Among Hispanics: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, And End Results (Seer) Population-Based Cohort Study, David Rivas

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Hispanics are now the youngest, largest, and fastest growing minority group in the U.S. Prostate cancer (PC) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among Hispanics. For the first time, we examined PC-specific survival among distinct Hispanic groups that include Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, as well as Central and South Americans. We compared these groups to the main reference population in the U.S., non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), after adjustment for prognostic factor risk categories (prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, Gleason score, and tumor stage), as well as sociodemographic covariates (e.g., health insurance, …

An Examination Of The Community And Environmental Impact Of A Las Vegas Convention Food Rescue Program, Samantha H. To May 2018

An Examination Of The Community And Environmental Impact Of A Las Vegas Convention Food Rescue Program, Samantha H. To

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Food insecurity affects millions of Americans each year, inflicting negative consequences on the physical and mental health outcomes at all ages. Concurrently, millions of tons of leftover edible foods are sent to landfill each year. Not only does this pose a question of ethics, but increasingly harms the environment by misusing resources and increasing the release of

greenhouse gases.

Food rescue advisory meetings highlighted the need for more focused research to be conducted that assessed the impacts of donating rescued convention food on local environmental and community health. A mixed-method approach was used to detail the food rescue process between …

Prevalence Of Cariogenic Microbial Flora Among Scardovia Wiggsiae-Positive And Negative Patients, Amy Tam May 2018

Prevalence Of Cariogenic Microbial Flora Among Scardovia Wiggsiae-Positive And Negative Patients, Amy Tam

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The formation of dental caries (cavities) is a complex, multi-dimensional process that necessarily involves many risk factors – including the acquisition and colonization of cariogenic oral bacteria. The most frequently associated oral pathogens are the acid-producing and acid-tolerant oral streptococcus species, such as Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans or SM). Many studies have established and confirmed the critical role of the formation of biofilm in the virulence of S. mutans, and the critical role this may play in determining the balance of the oral microbiome towards health or disease.

More recent efforts have discovered a novel cariogenic pathogen, Scardovia wiggsiae (S. …

Levels Of Interleukin-1Β And Interleukin-17 In The Tension And Compression Sites Of Teeth During Orthodontic Movement, Suzanne Wen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Orthodontic tooth movement requires coordinated bone resorption and deposition in response to mechanical stimuli. Underlying this process is a complex network of biological signaling to activate osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The broad category of small proteins known as cytokines include many potential mediators involved in complex interactions to initiate tooth movement. One of the signaling factors is interleukin-1β (IL-1β), which plays a critical role in inflammation and bone erosion via the activation of osteoclasts. IL-1β is a key cytokine involved in osteoclast differentiation, multinucleation, and overall survival. Recently, interleukin-17 (IL-17) has been identified as a potent inducer of inflammation that influences …

Electron Monte Carlo Dose Calculation Model Dependency On Optional Applicator Specific 1d Profiles, Ryan Sharp

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The accuracy of a calculated dose distribution compared to the actual dose administered to a patient undergoing electron radiation treatment is dependent upon the configured electron dose calculation algorithm in the treatment planning system (TPS). Configuration of the electron Monte Carlo (eMC) algorithm in the Eclipse TPS requires a variety of beam scan data. One of the required data sets is the inclusion of optional in air crossplane (CP) and inplane (IP) profiles. It is unknown if the inclusion of the optional profiles into the eMC algorithm greatly influences the output of the TPS. Two eMC algorithms were configured in …

Oral Glucose Challenge Impairs Skeletal Muscle Microvascular Blood Flow In Healthy People, Ryan D. Russell, Donghua Hu, Timothy Greenaway, James E. Sharman, Stephen Rattigan, Stephen M. Richards, Michelle A. Keske May 2018

Oral Glucose Challenge Impairs Skeletal Muscle Microvascular Blood Flow In Healthy People, Ryan D. Russell, Donghua Hu, Timothy Greenaway, James E. Sharman, Stephen Rattigan, Stephen M. Richards, Michelle A. Keske

Health & Human Performance Faculty Publications

Skeletal muscle microvascular (capillary) blood flow increases in the postprandial state or during insulin infusion due to dilation of precapillary arterioles to augment glucose disposal. This effect occurs independently of changes in large artery function. However, acute hyperglycemia impairs vascular function, causes insulin to vasoconstrict precapillary arterioles, and causes muscle insulin resistance in vivo. We hypothesized that acute hyperglycemia impairs postprandial muscle microvascular perfusion, without disrupting normal large artery hemodynamics, in healthy humans. Fifteen healthy people (5 F/10 M) underwent an oral glucose challenge (OGC, 50 g glucose) and a mixed-meal challenge (MMC) on two separate occasions (randomized, crossover design). …

What U.S Defense Attorneys Know About Facial Composites, Marisa H. Jaross May 2018

What U.S Defense Attorneys Know About Facial Composites, Marisa H. Jaross

Student Theses

The Innocence Project’s DNA exoneration database (2018) indicates that approximately 27% of wrongful conviction cases containing eyewitness evidence also included a composite or sketch[1] of the perpetrator. This statistic is alarming, given that composites are rarely used in criminal investigations (PERF, 2013), but not surprising considering “good” composites are notoriously difficult to construct (e.g., Wells, Charman, & Olson, 2005). It is well understood that eyewitness evidence can be particularly persuasive evidence of guilt for juries and thus we were interested in learning more about how defense attorneys prepare for trial with respect to this specific type of eyewitness evidence. …

Effect Of Exercise And Hypoxia On Plasma Telomerase, Charli D. Aguilar May 2018

Effect Of Exercise And Hypoxia On Plasma Telomerase, Charli D. Aguilar

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Introduction: Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) is the enzyme that adds telomeric sequences to the end of linear chromosomes. Exercise has shown to upregulate acutely leukocyte TERT after just 30 minutes of running on a treadmill at 80% of VO2max (Denham et al., 2016). Hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is also a mediator of TERT in in vitro (Nishi et al., 2004). Moderate acute exposure to hypoxia was associated with substantial increases in plasma TERT in a recent study on rats (Wang et al., 2014). The specific aim of the current study was to identify if acute hypoxia upregulates plasma TERT …

Implementing Evidenced-Based Tools And Obesity Bias Training When Counseling Overweight And Obese Truck Drivers, Sheryl M. Giordano May 2018

Implementing Evidenced-Based Tools And Obesity Bias Training When Counseling Overweight And Obese Truck Drivers, Sheryl M. Giordano

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many Americans are either overweight or obese, but commercial truck drivers are at an even higher risk by nature of their occupation. The 2010 Survey of U.S. Long-Haul Truck Drivers found that 22.8% were overweight, 68.9% were obese, and 17.4% were considered morbidly obese. The concern is that obesity is a gateway to multiple medical disorders, to include obstructive sleep apnea, cancer, diabetes, and cardiac disease. Despite growing concerns of obesity, healthcare providers face problems when counseling and discussing the issue with patients. The failure of healthcare providers to discuss obesity or the impending issue with patients (i.e., truck drivers) …

Increasing Ph In Cancer: Enabling A New Therapeutic Paradigm Using Novel Carbonate Nanoparticles, Avik Som May 2018

Increasing Ph In Cancer: Enabling A New Therapeutic Paradigm Using Novel Carbonate Nanoparticles, Avik Som

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Enormous progress has been made to treat cancer, and yet the mortality rate of cancer remains unacceptably high. High clinical resistance to molecularly targeted therapeutics has pushed interest again towards inhibiting universal biochemical hallmarks of cancer. Recent evidence suggests that malignant tumors acidify the local extracellular environment to activate proteases for degrading the tumor matrix, which facilitates metastasis, and explains why more aggressive tumors are more acidic. Current therapies have only focused on using the low pH for enhancing drug release in tumors, thereby still relying on the traditional paradigm of intracellular inhibition of pathways, a method that continues to …

An Evaluation Of Food Insecurity Rates And Its Correlates In A Filipino American Population Sample Residing In Clark County, Nevada, Prescott M. Cheong

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Filipino Americans comprise over half of the Asian American population in Clark County, Nevada. In 2016, 1.6% of Asian American households in Clark County reported being food insecure, which was considerably lower than food insecurity rates for White, non-Hispanic households (14.5%). Yet, Clark County demographic data reveals that 24% of Filipino-headed households report incomes at 200% or below the federal poverty level compared to 33% for Whites. Food insecurity rates specific to Filipino Americans in Clark County are lacking. Moreover, available food insecurity data aggregates Filipinos with other Asian American subgroups, which ignores the heterogeneity inherent to the Asian American …

Motor Impairments In Children With Autism: Insight Into The Complexity Of The Disorder, Jeffrey Douglas Eggleston May 2018

Motor Impairments In Children With Autism: Insight Into The Complexity Of The Disorder, Jeffrey Douglas Eggleston

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder which has seen an increasing prevalence rate in recent decades. Currently, the diagnostic criteria for the disorder evaluate a multitude of social communication and interactions, in a variety of contexts, and restricted or repetitive behavioral patterns (stereotyped movement, resistance to changes in routines, restricted interests, and hyper- or hypo-reactivity to sensory stimulus). Furthermore, ASD severity is based upon the marked severity of the above described impairment and they must also fall within one of three potential categories: 1) symptoms being present in early development, although potentially not manifested fully; 2) the …
