The purpose of this study was to examine the force-time differences between concentric-only half-squats (COHS) performed with ballistic (BAL) or non-ballistic (NBAL) intent across a range of loads. Eighteen resistance-trained men performed either BAL or NBAL COHS at 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90% of their one repetition maximum (1RM) COHS. Relative peak force (PF) and relative impulse from 0–50 ms (Imp50), 0–90 ms (Imp90), 0–200 ms (Imp200), and 0–250 ms (Imp250) were compared using a series of 2 × 4 (intent × load) repeated measures ANOVAs with Bonferroni post hoc tests. Cohen’s d effect sizes were calculated to provide measures …

A Rare Case Of Spontaneous Cardiac Tamponade Induced By Concomitant Use Of Rivaroxaban And Amiodarone., Oreoluwa Oladiran, Jared Segal, Ifeanyi Nwosu, Salik Nazir Aug 2018

A Rare Case Of Spontaneous Cardiac Tamponade Induced By Concomitant Use Of Rivaroxaban And Amiodarone., Oreoluwa Oladiran, Jared Segal, Ifeanyi Nwosu, Salik Nazir

Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency

Rivaroxaban is a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) approved as an important alternative to warfarin in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. We report the case of an 87-year-old man with past medical history of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation on rivaroxaban and recently started amiodarone for pulseless ventricular tachycardia who presented to our hospital with intermittent chest pain and was diagnosed with spontaneous hemopericardium causing cardiac tamponade. The culprit drugs were discontinued, and the patient was treated with emergent pericardiocentesis. Both rivaroxaban and amiodarone are substrates for the CYP3A4 hepatic pathway, and concomitant use can result in increased plasma rivaroxaban levels causing an …

Improving Rates Of Hpv Vaccination In The Pediatric Primary Care Setting, Angelica Hernandez Aug 2018

Improving Rates Of Hpv Vaccination In The Pediatric Primary Care Setting, Angelica Hernandez

Master's Projects and Capstones

Although the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been approved and recommended by the FDA and other vaccine experts for over a decade, the national uptake rate of the HPV vaccine has remained below the Healthy People 2020 goal of 80% (OFPHP, 2018). In 2016, the clinic’s completion rate for the HPV series was only 27.7% among 11- to 13-year-olds, which was not only below national targets, but also below the organization’s completion rate goal of 30.4%. In 2017, the clinic implemented the HPV Vaccination Improvement Project and was able to increase their completion rates up to 31.1%, which surpassed the …

Improving Communication: Huddling For Change, Harnoor Chahal Aug 2018

Improving Communication: Huddling For Change, Harnoor Chahal

Master's Theses

The purpose of this communication improvement project is to incorporate huddles between interdisciplinary departments within a microsystem in order to improve customer satisfaction by decreasing the number of grievances. Based on the increasing number of grievances due to delayed hospital discharge, which results from a lack of communication between team members, there is an increased need for communication between the microsystem. By implementing weekly huddles between the Inpatient and Outpatient nurses, not only will there be increased care-coordination, but there will also be a decreased delay in discharge from the hospital caused by missed or no communication. Evidence-based practice indicates …

Enhance Nurse-Physician Communication, Samira Samimi Aug 2018

Enhance Nurse-Physician Communication, Samira Samimi

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

Communication is the soul of healthcare, without it, the microsystem cannot survive. There are many disciplines in healthcare, in order for safe and effective care to be delivered strong communication is key. With initiatives taken, there is always room for improvement where gaps can be identified. In particular, a gap in communication between night shift nurses and primary care physicians. According to the CRICO Strategies (2015) there has been a $1.7 billion-dollar loss and 2,000 deaths in healthcare nationally as a result of miscommunication. Poor communication has serious devastating effects if it is not corrected promptly. The duty of …

Therapeutic Synergy With Hyperbaric Medicine: Clinical Experiences In Enhancing Hbot Effects, Paul Anderson Aug 2018

Therapeutic Synergy With Hyperbaric Medicine: Clinical Experiences In Enhancing Hbot Effects, Paul Anderson

International Symposium for Hyperbaric Medicine

Although very little is currently published regarding the use of synergists with HBOT it is an area of great clinical curiosity. For example some animal data using oxidative IV therapies in conjunction with HBOT which showed benefit have had to be modified when transferred to human protocols. Other therapies which have shown theoretical promise have exhibited synergy with HBOT and are emerging as future directions to clinically augment the benefits of HBOT.

Tumor Biology And Hyperbaric Oxygen: Differential Effects In Tumor Versus Normal Tissues, Paul Anderson Aug 2018

Tumor Biology And Hyperbaric Oxygen: Differential Effects In Tumor Versus Normal Tissues, Paul Anderson

International Symposium for Hyperbaric Medicine

When assessing the potential benefits of HBOT in oncology patients occasional confusion arises when extrapolating the cytokine, epigenetic and other effects of HBOT in non-cancerous tissues (neurological and other injuries etc.) versus those in cancerous tissues. This confusion often results in misinterpretation of data and concern over potential harm in HBOT oncology cases. The focus of this presentation is to point out the data supporting these differences as we know it to date and underscore the benefits while decreasing this clinical confusion.
