Cadmium is one of the most toxic metals that has high environmental stability and can hardly be converted into substances of low toxicity. In the present study, the effects of cadmium on the development of somites of chick embryos under in vitro conditions were investigated. First, fertilized eggs were incubated until they reached the stage of 15?20 somites. The embryos were then separated from the yolk by using the window technique. The somites were separated by insulin needles under a stereomicroscope. The separated somites were then transferred to Dulbecco?s modified Eagle?s medium (DMEM) stock culture and treated with different concentrations …

Frequently, a sequence from a single strain of a virus is used to design primers for PCR-based virus detection. However, high mutation rates in RNA viruses lead to failure of microorganism detection in clinical samples. Therefore, it is essential to find conserved regions within sequences to design primers for the detection of pathogen genomes in suspected clinical samples. The aim of the study was to find conserved regions of the genome for improved serotype detection. In the present study, primers were designed for serotype detection based on the VP2 coding region of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) after alignment of full …

Raman spectroscopy has numerous applications in the field of biology. One such application is the simultaneously measurement of the concentration of multiple biochemical components in low volume aqueous mixtures, for example, a single drop of blood serum. Over twenty years ago, it was shown for the first time that it was possible to estimate the concentration of glucose, urea, and lactic acid in mixture by combining Raman Spectroscopy with Partial Least Squares Regression analysis. This was followed by numerous contributions in the literature designed to increase the number of components and reduce the limits of concentration that could be simultaneously …

Evaluation Of Biological Response Modification And Immunotherapeutic Activities Of Barley-Derived Arabinoxylans Against Coccidiosis In Commercial Broilers, Masood Akhtar, Muteen Humayun, Zafar Iqbal, Mian Muhammad Awais, Muhammad Irfan Anwar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Plant-derived polysaccharides have been reported for diverse biological response modification (BRM) and immunotherapeutic (IT) activities in animals by activating their defense systems to perform better immunogenically against invading pathogens. Keeping this in view, this study was conducted to assess the BRM and IT activities of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)-derived arabinoxylans (AXs) against coccidiosis in broilers. Significantly enhanced (P < 0.05) in vivo and in vitro lymphoproliferative responses to T-cell mitogens were revealed in broilers administered barley AXs when compared to the control group. Humoral immune response in terms of antibody titers against sheep erythrocytes was also found higher (P < 0.05) in AX-administered chickens. Furthermore, AX-administered chickens also showed higher weekly weight gains and improved feed conversion ratios as compared to controls. Results of the challenge experiment showed that the percentage of protection and daily weight gains were statistically higher (P < 0.05) whereas mean oocysts per gram of droppings and lesion scores were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the chickens administered barley AXs as compared to controls. In conclusion, barley-derived AXs led to better growth performance and elicited humoral and cellular immune responses in commercial broilers that persisted against coccidial infection in broiler chickens.

Attentional Bias To Alcohol In An In Vivo Setting, Ramey G. Monem
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
The phenomenon of attentional bias to alcohol, where drinkers demonstrate a preference in allocating visual attention towards alcohol-related stimuli rather than neutral stimuli, is well-established. Studies detecting this phenomenon typically utilize computer-administered stimulus presentation tasks such as the visual dot probe task. Despite their frequency of use, these tasks do not represent the ways in which individuals typically encounter alcohol outside of the laboratory. Typical environments where alcohol is present allow individuals to move about freely and encounter alcohol while also being exposed to many other stimuli. This dissertation sought to implement a novel approach to assessing attentional bias in …
The Potential Effects Of Exercise-Induced Cortisol Release On Executive Functioning In Preadolescents, Kory Matthew Bettencourt
The Potential Effects Of Exercise-Induced Cortisol Release On Executive Functioning In Preadolescents, Kory Matthew Bettencourt
Master's Theses
Purpose: Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MAE) has been shown to elicit improvements in cognition and subsequent academic performance among preadolescents. Aerobic exercise has also shown to increase cortisol release in response to increasing exercise intensity. However, it is unknown if increased cortisol levels following exercise are related to acute improvements in executive function following a bout of MAE in preadolescents. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential effects of increased cortisol release after acute MAE on attention and working memory among preadolescents. Methods: Eleven preadolescents [6 males, 5 females] volunteered to participate in this study (age=9.45±1.03). …

Assessing The Barriers To Cardiac Care In Carriers Of Duchenne And Becker Muscular Dystrophy, Lauren Renae Eekhoff
Assessing The Barriers To Cardiac Care In Carriers Of Duchenne And Becker Muscular Dystrophy, Lauren Renae Eekhoff
Theses and Dissertations
Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy (DBMD) are X-linked conditions due to mutations within the dystrophin gene that cause progressive muscle weakness, respiratory insufficiency, and cardiomyopathy in affected males. Approximately twothirds of women who have a son with DBMD are carriers of the condition. Carriers typically do not manifest muscular symptoms but are at risk for cardiac abnormalities such as dilated cardiomyopathies. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that carriers of DBMD receive a complete cardiac evaluation by a cardiologist that includes an echocardiogram and electrocardiogram (EKG) with reevaluation every five years. According to a recent study33, as many as …
The Impact Of Communication Deficits On Puberty And Sexual Development In Adolescents On The Autism Spectrum, Ashton Wolfe
The Impact Of Communication Deficits On Puberty And Sexual Development In Adolescents On The Autism Spectrum, Ashton Wolfe
Theses and Dissertations
Transitioning into a sexually mature adult is a challenging time for both an adolescent with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and his or her family. Sexual development begets challenges due to the demands it places on the social and communication skills needed to explore developmental changes that are occurring physically, emotionally and hormonally. A diagnosis of ASD is largely established by quantifying impediments in social and communication skills through observation. With deficits in these skills, one can assume that social and communication difficulties can create obstacles in the sexual development of affected individuals. Our study used quantitative and qualitative measures to …
Is Current Fragile X Syndrome Counseling Enough? Expanding The Clinical Phenotype Of Fragile X In Premutation And Intermediate Allele Carriers, Zahra Saadat Girnary
Is Current Fragile X Syndrome Counseling Enough? Expanding The Clinical Phenotype Of Fragile X In Premutation And Intermediate Allele Carriers, Zahra Saadat Girnary
Theses and Dissertations
Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is caused by a triplet repeat expansion on the FMR1 gene. Individuals with >200 repeats have FXS, while individuals between 45-54 and 55- 200 repeats have the FMR1 intermediate allele and premutation, respectively. FXS is characterized by autism and intellectual disability while the premutation is associated with fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) and fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI). However, recent research shows that the premutation may be associated with psychiatric manifestations. Currently, there are no established clinical features associated with the intermediate allele. This study sought to 1) study knowledge regarding FXTAS, FXPOI, as well …
