Introduction New treatments for neurodegenerative disease are urgently needed, and clinical trial methods are an essential component of new drug development. Although a parallel-group study design for neurological disorder clinical trials is commonly used to test the effectiveness of a new treatment as compared to placebo, it does not efficiently use information from the on-going study to increase the success rate of a trial or to stop a trial earlier when the new treatment is indeed ineffective. Modern medicine is in the midst of a revolution driven by “big data,” rapidly advancing computing power, and broader integration of technology into healthcare. Highly detailed and individualized profiles of both health and disease states are now possible, including biomarkers, genomic profiles, cognitive and behavioral phenotypes, high-frequency assessments, and medical imaging. Although these data are incredibly complex, they can potentially be used to understand multi-determinant causal relationships, elucidate modifiable factors, and ultimately customize treatments based on individual parameters. Background and Purpose: To examine the co-occurrence of cardiovascular risk factors and cluster subgroups of college students for cardiovascular risks. Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted using co-occurrence patterns and hierarchical clustering analysis in 158 college students. Results: The top co-occurring cardiovascular risk factors were overweight/obese and hypertension (10.8%, n = 17). Of the total 34 risk factors that co-occurred, 30 of them involved being overweight/obese. A six-cluster-solution was obtained, two clusters displayed elevated levels of lifetime and 30-year cardiovascular disease risks. In this discussion paper, we explore the challenges of conducting e-mental health intervention research among Asian American women and propose a model for addressing these barriers. Based on an extensive literature review, we identify two main types of barriers to conducting e-mental health intervention research among Asian American women: recruitment barriers and adherence barriers. Recruitment barriers are further subcategorized into those related to (1) stigmatized cultural beliefs about mental illness and mental health services; (2) lack of awareness about mental health services; and (3) language barrier. The present study explores the relationships between resilience, acculturative stress, and family norms against disclosure of mental health problems among foreign-born Filipino American women. The sample consisted of 159 foreign-born Filipino American women aged 18 years and above and residing in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Participants completed paper-and-pencil questionnaires. Results indicated high levels of resilience and moderate levels of acculturative stress. Findings also showed a significant negative correlation between resilience and acculturative stress, and a significant predictive effect of resilience on acculturative stress. Nurses are masters at multitasking—that is performing several nursing interventions simultaneously during a patient encounter. While the new technologies such as smart pumps, bar-code medication, administration systems, electronic health records (EHRs), wearables, and smartphones being introduced into our practice environments are designed to increases efficiency, promote safety, and streamline the work of nursing, we also need to see what is current and emerging in the research arena. We need to continue to seek new evidence-based practice to care effectively for the Asian/Pacific Islander populations and promote a healing environment while incorporating the advantages and efficiencies that technologies provide.

Background: Most individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) experience post-injury deficits in postural control. Currently available measures of postural control are lab-based or supervised, which may hinder timely symptom assessment for individuals with mTBI, including Asian populations, who do not seek initial screening post-injury. In this proof-of-concept testing study, we introduce a real-time mobile health (mHealth) system to measure postural control during walking. Within the context of lifestyle intervention, this may refer to physical activity, diet modifications, or lifestyle intervention program attendance or attrition. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by cognitive decline and the presence of two core pathologies, amyloid β plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Over the last decade, the presence of a sustained immune response in the brain has emerged as a third core pathology in AD. The sustained activation of the brain's resident macrophages (microglia) and other immune cells has been demonstrated to exacerbate both amyloid and tau pathology and may serve as a link in the pathogenesis of the disorder. Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) detected in appendectomy specimens and the incidence and clinicopathologic characteristics of these tumors in our center. Materials and methods: A total of 13,863 patients were evaluated retrospectively. All underwent appendectomy operation in the Kayseri Training and Research Hospital and had a histopathological examination at the Pathology Clinic between January 2007 and March 2017. Age, sex, preoperative clinical findings, operation procedure, and histopathological examination results of the cases reported to be NET are presented. Background/aim: The Cancer Fatigue Scale (CFS) was developed to evaluate the severity of fatigue in patients with breast cancer. The aim of this study is to translate and culturally adapt a Turkish version and investigate the validity and reliability of the CFS in Turkish patients with fatigue symptoms. Materials and methods: Eighty participants completed the Turkish version of the CFS for breast cancer and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire ″Core 30″ (EORTC QLQ-C30). Background/aim: Diffuse parenchymal lung diseases (DPLDs) comprise a broad, heterogeneous group of diseases with common functional characteristics and a common final pathway, usually leading to irreversible fibrosis. We investigated the effects of the physiological and functional parameters and of pulmonary hypertension (PH) on survival in DPLDs. Materials and methods: The study included 158 patients with DPLDs. Patient data were examined retrospectively, and survival status was obtained through phone calls. Results: Patients were divided into five groups according to their diagnosis: idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), non-IPF idiopathic interstitial pneumonias, connective tissue diseases, sarcoidosis, and other DPLDs. Background/aim: This study evaluates diabetic macular-edema (DME) patients for the effect of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injection on macular thickness and proangiogenic biomarkers in serum and vitreous. Materials and methods: Forty DME patients were analyzed for macular thickness (MT). Twelve proangiogenic biomarkers in serum and vitreous were analyzed before and after IVB. Results: Significant decrease in MT with vitreal vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) was observed as expected after IVB, while serum VEGF-A did not follow a decreasing trend in contrast to VEGF-C, which decreased both in serum and vitreous. Background/aim: Parvovirus risk in blood transfusion has become a popular research topic since there are limited data on parvovirus seroprevalence in blood donors in Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate parvovirus seroprevalence in blood donors in Turkey. Materials and methods: Blood samples of 988 blood donors admitted to a university blood bank were obtained for parvovirus B19 IgM and IgG detection. The samples were analyzed using the ELISA method. Background/aim: This study was performed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of shear wave elastography by virtual touch tissue imaging quantification in patients with diffuse thyroid gland pathology and to differentiate Graves' disease from Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Materials and methods: Thirty patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and 22 patients with Graves' disease were evaluated with conventional ultrasonography and shear wave elastography by virtual touch tissue imaging quantification. Background/aim: The current study was carried out to describe the clinical presentation, antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, and outcome of invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella disease (iNTS) in a tertiary care center. Materials and methods: A 5-year hospital-based retrospective study was carried out on blood culture-confirmed cases of iNTS. Medical records of patients were reviewed to obtain information on demography, clinical manifestations, comorbidities, complications, immune status, treatment, and clinical outcome. Background/aim: The Wnt/ß-catenin pathway has important biological activities, including the differentiation of cells and joint formations. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of paricalcitol on experimentally induced arthritis. Materials and methods: Type II collagen combined with Freund's adjuvant was applied to induce arthritis in Wistar albino female rats. Paricalcitol (0.3 μg/kg daily) was subcutaneously injected starting 1 day after collagen applications (prophylactic group) or 1 day after the onset of arthritis (therapeutic group), until day 29. Results: The 29th day arthritis scores were lower compared to the 13th day scores in the paricalcitol groups (P < 0.05), while they were higher in the arthritis group (P < 0.05). Marked cartilage-bone destruction and extensive perisynovial inflammation were detected in the arthritis group. Decreased cartilage-bone destruction and perisynovial inflammation in the paws were observed in the paricalcitol groups. The tissue mRNA levels of DKK1, Wnt5a, and axin-2 were higher in the arthritis group than in the control group. In the paricalcitol groups, mRNA expressions were lower than in the arthritis group. Conclusion: The present study shows that the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway is active in arthritis. Moreover, paricalcitol ameliorates arthritis via inhibiting the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. Paricalcitol and the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway are candidates for research in human rheumatoid arthritis.
