This pilot study aimed to determine if a renal nurse could master the skill of performing and correctly interpreting Point of Care Ultrasound on patients receiving hemodialysis.

Methods: After receiving theoretical training and performing 100 training scans, a renal nurse performed 60 ultrasound …

Visual-Vestibular Integration During Self-Motion Perception In Younger And Older Adults, Robert Ramkhalawansingh, John Butler, Jennifer Campos Jan 2018

Visual-Vestibular Integration During Self-Motion Perception In Younger And Older Adults, Robert Ramkhalawansingh, John Butler, Jennifer Campos

Articles

Younger adults integrate visual and vestibular cues to self-motion in a manner consistent with optimal integration; however, little is currently known about whether this process changes with older age. Our objective was to determine whether older adults, like younger adults, display evidence of optimal visual-vestibular integration, including reductions in bimodal variance (visual-vestibular) compared with unimodal variance (visual or vestibular alone), and reliability-based cue weighting. We used a motion simulator and a head-mounted display to introduce a 2-interval forced-choice heading estimation task. Older (65+ years) and younger adults (18–35 years) judged which of two movements was more rightward. Movements consisted of …

Cognitive Load Reduces The Effects Of Optic Flow On Gait And 2 Electrocortical Dynamics During Treadmill Walking 3, Brenda Malcolm, John J. Foxe, John Butler, Sophie Molholm, Pierfilippo De Sanctis

Articles

While navigating complex environments the brain must continuously adapt to both external demands such as fluctuating sensory inputs, as well as internal demands, such as engagement in a cognitively demanding task. Previous studies have demonstrated changes in behavior and gait with increased sensory and cognitive load, but the underlying cortical mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, in a Mobile Brain/Body Imaging (MoBI) approach sixteen young adults walked on a treadmill with high-density EEG while 3D motion capture tracked kinematics of the head and feet. Visual load was manipulated with the presentation of optic flow with and without continuous mediolateral perturbations. The …

The emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) is currently seen as one of the major threats to human and animal public health. Veterinary use of antimicrobials in both developing and developed countries is many-fold greater than their use in human medicine and is an important determinant in selection of ARB. In light of the recently outlined National Plan Against Antimicrobial Resistance in Chile, our findings on antimicrobial use in salmon aquaculture and their impact on the environment and human health are highly relevant. Ninety-five percent of tetracyclines, phenicols and quinolones imported into Chile between 1998 and 2015 were for …

NYMC Faculty Publications

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma (PMBL) share similar molecular features by gene expression profiling. Frequent gains of chromosome 9p exhibit higher Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) transcript levels with increased JAK2 activity, suggesting aberrant activity of JAK2 and STAT pathways. This signaling pathway alteration may in part play an important role in the pathogenesis and/or chemoradiotherapy resistance in HL and PMBL. Ruxolitinib is a potent and selective JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor, with activity against myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) including those harboring the JAK2V617F mutation. We investigated the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of ruxolitinib and changes in downstream signaling pathways …

Ghrelin Upregulates The Phosphorylation Of The Glun2b Subunit Of The Nmda Receptor By Activating Ghsr1a And Fyn In The Rat Hippocampus, Liza Berrout, Masako Isokawa Jan 2018

Ghrelin Upregulates The Phosphorylation Of The Glun2b Subunit Of The Nmda Receptor By Activating Ghsr1a And Fyn In The Rat Hippocampus, Liza Berrout, Masako Isokawa

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Ghrelin and its receptor GHSR1a have been shown to exert numerous physiological functions in the brain, in addition to the well-established orexigenic role in the hypothalamus. Earlier work indicated that ghrelin stimulated the phosphorylation of the GluN1 subunit of the NMDA receptor (NMDAR) and enhanced synaptic transmission in the hippocampus. In the present study, we report that the exogenous application of ghrelin increased GluN2B phosphorylation. This increase was independent of GluN2B subunit activity or NMDAR channel activity. However, it depended on the activation of GHSR1a and Fyn as it was blocked by D-Lys3-GHRP-6 and PP2, respectively. Inhibitors for G-protein-regulated second …

Purpose—Increased vascularity is a hallmark of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Microvessel density (MVD) is one measurement of tumor angiogenesis; however, its utility as a biomarker of outcome is unknown. ECOG-ACRIN 2805 (E2805) enrolled 1,943 resected high-risk RCC patients randomized to adjuvant sunitinib, sorafenib, or placebo. We aimed to determine the prognostic and predictive role of MVD in RCC.

Experimental Design—We obtained pretreatment primary RCC nephrectomy tissues from 822 patients on E2805 and constructed tissue microarrays. Using quantitative immunofluorescence, we measured tumor MVD as the area of CD34-expressing cells. We determined the association with disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival …

A Bi-Level Heuristic Solution For The Nurse Scheduling Problem Based On Shift-Swapping, Ahmed Youssef, Samah Senbel Jan 2018

A Bi-Level Heuristic Solution For The Nurse Scheduling Problem Based On Shift-Swapping, Ahmed Youssef, Samah Senbel

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new heuristic solution to the well-known Nurse Scheduling Problem (NSP). The NSP has a lot of constraints to satisfy. Some are mandatory and specified by the hospital administration, these are known as hard constraints. Some constraints are put by the nurses themselves to produce a comfortable schedule for themselves, and these are known as soft constraints. Our solution is based on the practice of shift swapping done by nurses after they receive an unsatisfactory schedule. The constraints are arranged in order of importance. Our technique works on two levels, first we generate a schedule that satisfies …
