Association Of Opioid Metabolism With Aberrant Drug-Related Behaviors Among Non-Malignant Chronic Pain Patients, Eduardo Aguila
Association Of Opioid Metabolism With Aberrant Drug-Related Behaviors Among Non-Malignant Chronic Pain Patients, Eduardo Aguila
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from some form of chronic pain. Chronic opioid therapy (COT) use in non-malignant chronic pain patients (NMCPP) has markedly increased over the past two decades due to growing consensus that COT is suitable for the treatment of moderate-to-severe non-malignant chronic pain. Yet, COT for NMCPP has been widely associated with multiple aberrant drug-related behaviors (ADRB) such as misuse, abuse, diversion, addiction, and pseudoaddiction. One reason for the relative high incidence of ADRB among NMCPP on COT may be genetics-induced medication response variability, which, can result in pharmacotherapy failure and/or toxicity
The present study evaluated …

BACKGROUND:
Within the trans-subclavian approach, procedural techniques can vary widely, and reported access generally refers to an infraclavicular axillary approach. We describe and report the use of a novel supraclavicular true subclavian approach for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) exclusively for implantation of Sapien 3 valves.
CASE PRESENTATION:
We report our first five consecutive patients undergoing TAVR with a Sapien 3 valve using a standardized subclavian approach at a single center. In-hospital and 30-day complications were reported. The use of this approach resulted in successful implantation in 100% of patients in a safe manner with 0% mortality, stroke, and vascular …
Comparative Analysis Of Low Molecular Weight Fraction Of Conditioned Media Derived From Starvation-Dormant And Anaerobically-Dormant Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis, Marina Buciuc
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Johne's disease (JD) caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is a contagious chronic enteritis affecting all ruminants and causing economic loss of at least $250 million annually in the US dairy industry. One of the major limitations in the diagnosis of JD is the low sensitivity of fecal culture in animals with no clinical signs of the disease, but who are actively shedding MAP. Persistence of MAP in the host with no apparent signs of infection is attributed to its ability to enter a dormant state wherein the bacterium is viable, but is not able to replicate until conditions …

This study analyzed and compared the severity of performance slumps of collegiate student-athletes in general and across academic years. The factors examined with performance slumps included athlete burnout, academic burnout, relationship satisfaction, and grade point averages. The first hypothesis was that reduced accomplishment scores from the athlete burnout questionnaire would indicate the severity of performance slumps. The results did not support the hypothesis. The second hypothesis was that the severity of performance slumps would positively correlate with academic burnout and negatively correlate with relationship satisfaction. The results supported this hypothesis. The third hypothesis was that student-athletes who experienced a performance …
A Comparison Of Hamstring Injury Recovery Rates In Male And Female Athletes, Amanda Hall
A Comparison Of Hamstring Injury Recovery Rates In Male And Female Athletes, Amanda Hall
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Excerpt from Introduction
Hamstring injuries are among the most common muscular injuries sustained by athletes across multiple levels of various sports (Askling et al). Most hamstring injuries occur during similar movements and under similar conditions, where the muscle is required to be explosive. Thus, athletes that participate in sports where “sprinting, kicking, or high-speed skilled movements” are required, experience an increased likelihood of suffering a hamstring injury (Erickson and Sherry). After injury, athletes are then subjected to different methods of rehabilitation to heal and strengthen the afflicted area. However, some athletes take longer than others to return and impatience may …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Shiga toxin (Stxs) is a family of structurally and functionally related bacterial cytotoxins produced by Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 and shigatoxigenic group of Escherichia coli that cause shigellosis and hemorrhagic colitis, respectively. Until recently, it has been thought that Stxs only inhibits the protein synthesis and induces expression to a limited number of genes in host cells, but recent data showed that Stxs can trigger several signaling pathways in mammalian cells and activate cell cycle and apoptosis. To explore the changes in gene expression induced by Stxs that have been shown in other systems to correlate with cancer progression, we …

Introduction/Purpose: Over the last few years an increasing focus has been directed to define cut-off points for important health improvement. Minimal clinically important difference (MCID) values have traditionally been used to determine if a statistical change translates to a clinical improvement to the patient. Although MCID is helpful, it may be even more important to identify if the current treatment is adequate or that the patient has achieved an acceptable symptom state (symptoms minimal enough to live with). The purpose of this study was to determine if gender influenced patient reported outcomes (patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) and PROMIS Physical …

Does The Foundational Model Of Anatomy Ontology Provide A Knowledge Base For Learning And Assessment In Anatomy Education?, Melissa D. Clarkson, Mark E. Whipple
Does The Foundational Model Of Anatomy Ontology Provide A Knowledge Base For Learning And Assessment In Anatomy Education?, Melissa D. Clarkson, Mark E. Whipple
Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications
Throughout the development of the Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA) ontology, one of the use cases put forth has been anatomy education. In this work, we examine which types of knowledge taught to anatomy students can be supported by the FMA knowledge base. We first categorize types of anatomical knowledge, then express these patterns in the form “Given ____, state ____”. Each of the 33 patterns was evaluated for whether this type of knowledge is compatible with the modeling and scope of the FMA.
