Sex Differences In Cardiovascular Adaptations To Chronic Endurance Exercise, Jacqueline A. Augustine
Sex Differences In Cardiovascular Adaptations To Chronic Endurance Exercise, Jacqueline A. Augustine
Dissertations - ALL
Endurance exercise typically leads to beneficial cardiac adaptations manifested as increased cardiac mass, higher cardiac function and lower central hemodynamic load (blood pressure, aortic stiffness and wave reflections). However, studies in male marathoners suggest detrimental cardiac remodeling, such that larger cardiac mass is associated with reduced cardiac function and higher central hemodynamic load. There are well-established sex differences in cardiac adaptations to endurance exercise and central hemodynamics across the lifespan. Whether there are sex differences in cardiovascular adaptations in marathoners requires further scrutiny. We examined sex differences in 1) Left ventricle (LV) structure, 2) LV function 3) 24-hour central hemodynamic …

Despite advances in next generation sequencing technologies, determining the genetic basis of ocular disease remains a major challenge due to the limited access and prohibitive cost of human forward genetics. Thus, less than 4,000 genes currently have available phenotype information for any organ system. Here we report the ophthalmic findings from the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium, a large-scale functional genetic screen with the goal of generating and phenotyping a null mutant for every mouse gene. Of 4364 genes evaluated, 347 were identified to influence ocular phenotypes, 75% of which are entirely novel in ocular pathology. This discovery greatly increases the …

Tumble Tots: Outcomes Of A Gymnastics Program For Children With Disabilities, Cayla Leichtenberger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the benefits, children with disabilities do not participate in recreational activities as often as typically developing peers. The purpose of the program was to: 1) describe the benefit of a gymnastics program on a child’s development, and 2) identify the impact of a staff training program. Engagement in the proposed program aimed to ultimately contribute to a child’s involvement in recreational activities, health and quality of life (QOL). All participants in the gymnastics program demonstrated a positive change in motor and communication skills. Pre-test data from the staff training program indicated that none of the gymnastics staff members were …

Sensory-Based Programming In Mental Health: Sense Of Self, Nikki Yeckel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The doctoral experiential component (DEC) for this Capstone was completed at the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (VA) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The program, called Sense of Self, was implemented with the Veteran mental health (MH) population in an inpatient psychiatric rehabilitation unit at the VA. Sense of Self was a three-day educational program that educated Veterans on the sensory systems and sensory processing, provided calming or alerting strategies with use of sensory materials, and assisted the Veterans in creating sensory home programs based on personal goals. The goals of this Capstone were to inform the staff of the Veteran demographic population …

Prognostic Relevance Of Ccdc88c (Daple) Transcripts In The Peripheral Blood Of Patients With Cutaneous Melanoma, Ying Dunkel, Anna L. Reid, Jason Ear, Nicolas Aznar, Michael Millward, Elin Gray, Robert Pearce, Melanie Ziman, Pradipta Ghosh
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
A loss of balance between G protein activation and deactivation has been implicated in the initiation of melanomas, and non-canonical Wnt signaling via the Wnt5A/Frizzled (FZD) pathway has been shown to be critical for the switch to an invasive phenotype. Daple [CCDC88C], a cytosolic guanine nucleotide exchange modulator (GEM) which enhances non-canonical Wnt5A/FZD signaling via activation of trimeric G protein, Gαi, has been shown to serve opposing roles-as an inducer of EMT and invasiveness and a potent tumor suppressor-via two isoforms, V1 (full-length) and V2 (short spliced isoform), respectively. Here we report that the relative abundance of these isoforms in …
The Influence Of Age, Gender, And Thiol Repletion In An In Vivo Model Of Lewy Body Disorders, Daniel Mason
The Influence Of Age, Gender, And Thiol Repletion In An In Vivo Model Of Lewy Body Disorders, Daniel Mason
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lewy body disorders are a family of neurological brain disorders associated with olfactory, motor, and cognitive deficits and are collectively defined as α-synucleinopathies, as they are characterized by hallmark “Lewy bodies” composed of aggregated, fibrillar α-synuclein. It is not certain but often posited that fibrillar α-synuclein seeds the progressive, self-propagating spread of Lewy pathology through neuroanatomical circuitry. Furthermore, the site of disease induction is still debated. In Aim I, we developed a novel protocol for generating reproducible and robust α-synucleinopathy in the limbic temporal lobe following infusions of preformed α-synuclein iv fibrils into the mouse olfactory bulb, which is frequently …

Oculomotor Nerve Palsy After Influenza Vaccine In Inflammatory Bowel Disease., Rajesh Essrani Md, Rajesh K Essrani, Shehriyar Mehershahi, Arjun K Lohana, Anuraj Sudhakaran
Department of Medicine
Influenza and pneumococcal vaccines are recommended in inflammatory bowel disease patients. Several neurologic complications have been reported after influenza vaccines, such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis; however, rarely, oculomotor palsy will occur. We report the case of a 23-year-old male with a past medical history of ulcerative colitis on sulfasalazine who presented to the hospital with a complaint of blurry vision five days after an influenza vaccine. Most of the possible causes of oculomotor nerve palsy, such as stroke, intracranial space-occupying lesions, aneurysms, and infections, were ruled out by history, physical exam, blood work, …
Effects Of Cultural And Language Barriers On The Outcome Of Autism Spectrum Disorder Amongst Children From The Somali Immigrant Population Of Minnesota, Amal Farah
Theses and Graduate Projects
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a devastating developmental disorder with a decline in both neurological and behavioral functions. ASK can present with delays in language development, social skills, and restricts behavioral patterns. The prevalence of ASD has been on the rise int he United States with a rate of one in 69 children. Moreover, the prevalence of ASD has been drastically increasing in the Somali community of Minnesota affecting one in 32 children. Many research studies associate the rise of ASD in the Somali community with the elements of culture, tradition, and language barriers. This research paper will explore how …

Facilitating Pre-Service Teachers To Engage Emergent Bilinguals In Productive Struggle, Benjamin T. Dickey, Jim Ewing, Melissa Caruso, Emily D. Fulmer
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
This study utilized a multiple case study with qualitative research to examine how Pre-service teachers (PSTs) might engage Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) in productive struggle—grappling to solve problems (Warshauer, 2015). The researchers created a rubric based on Warshauer’s (2015) case study to record the types of questions PSTs asked as they tutored fourth grade EBs. Warshauer (2015) claimed PSTs should allow students more wait time and ask questions. She referred to such questions as affordance and probing guidance, which facilitates productive struggle. In order to discover more about the PSTs’ thinking, the researchers interviewed the PSTs before and after their first, …
Adaptations Made To Evidence-Based Public Health Programs In Low- To Middle- Income Countries: A Concept Mapping Analysis, Elizabeth Holguin
Adaptations Made To Evidence-Based Public Health Programs In Low- To Middle- Income Countries: A Concept Mapping Analysis, Elizabeth Holguin
Nursing ETDs
One of the most challenging barriers to implementing successful and sustainable evidence-based programs in public health is the ability to remain faithful to original protocols grounded in scientific evidence while adapting programmatic components to reflect the reality of the communities they are meant to benefit. It is generally accepted that some degree of adaptation should occur in order to achieve positive, sustainable outcomes in public health programs. A concept mapping methodology was used to explore types of adaptation that occur during implementation of evidence-based global health programs in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). Purposive and snowball sampling produced a sample …
