Hiv Intervention For The Dc Community, Evelyn Rosales, Elias Belhocine, Daniel Ndagha, Tiana Young Jan 2018

Hiv Intervention For The Dc Community, Evelyn Rosales, Elias Belhocine, Daniel Ndagha, Tiana Young

DC Health and Academic Prep Program (DC HAPP)

Before the 1980s, the world had little to no knowledge about HIV. Now there has been research conducted on HIV/AIDs that has helped people prevent and be aware of their status. However, there is still an increasing amount of HIV cases in adults (18-34), especially in DC communities. Such disparities in HIV cases occur based on people’s race, gender, sexual orientation, income and geographical location. The social determinants of health also play a role in these cases such as poverty, access to care, stigma and racism. Our program will tackle these issues by providing an emphasis on existing programs by …

The Influence Of Protein Context On Polyglutamine Toxicity In Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3, Joanna Rae Sutton Jan 2018

The Influence Of Protein Context On Polyglutamine Toxicity In Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3, Joanna Rae Sutton

Wayne State University Dissertations

The polyglutamine (polyQ) disease family is composed of nine neurodegenerative diseases caused by CAG trinucleotide repeat expansions in the associated genes. Although these diseases are caused by similar mutations, the polyQ proteins are otherwise structurally and functionally unique. Thus, the protein domains surrounding the polyQ tracts, as well as their interacting partners, are thought to be critical to the pathogenesis of these clinically distinct diseases. Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 is caused by polyQ expansion of ataxin-3, a deubiquitinating enzyme implicated in protein quality control, transcriptional regulation, and DNA repair. Rad23 and VCP are two of ataxin-3’s protein quality control partners …

Determinants Of Health Disparities Among African And Caucasian Americans With Chronic Kidney Disease, Renal Cell Carcinoma, And End-Stage Renal Disease, Kathleen Cosgrove Jan 2018

Determinants Of Health Disparities Among African And Caucasian Americans With Chronic Kidney Disease, Renal Cell Carcinoma, And End-Stage Renal Disease, Kathleen Cosgrove

The Graduate Review

Many studies have confirmed the disparity that black patients have an increased prevalence of severely impaired kidney function compared to whites. Without dialysis, or a kidney transplant, chronic kidney disease will progress to a fatal prognosis of end-stage kidney failure. The most common type of kidney cancer, renal cell carcinoma, occurs most often in adult males, age 50-70. Diabetes and hypertension are two of the most determinant factors of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States, which most often develops following a chronic kidney disease (CKD) diagnosis. The poor are most susceptible to disease due to high risk community …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Mounting evidence supports a role for the immune system in breast cancer outcomes. The ability to distinguish highly immunogenic tumors susceptible to anti-tumor immunity from weakly immunogenic or inherently immune-resistant tumors would guide development of therapeutic strategies in breast cancer. Genomic, transcriptomic and clinical data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Molecular Taxonomy of Breast Cancer International Consortium (METABRIC) breast cancer cohorts were used to examine statistical associations between tumor mutational burden (TMB) and the survival of patients whose tumors were assigned to previously-described prognostic immune subclasses reflecting favorable, weak or poor immune-infiltrate dispositions (FID, WID or PID, respectively). …

“Dignity In Living And In Dying”: The Henry H. H. Remak Memorial Lecture, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Dignity is seen commonly as an ethical obligation owed to human persons. The dimensions of this obligation in today's post secular society are, however, subject to wide discussion and debate; for the term, human dignity, and its preservation, defies universal agreement. Yet, its preservation, together with the prevention of indignity, is a guiding principle or at least a vector of force in a wide range of issues ranging from recognizing and protecting the civil rights of the citizen members of the LGBTQ community throughout the nation to the care of the disabled and to the dying.

In clinical medicine, safeguarding …

Assessing Assisted Reproductive Technology, Raymond C. O'Brien

Scholarly Articles

Technological innovation possesses both opportunity and challenge. Because assisted reproductive technology (ART) involves sexual intimacy, parenthood, personhood, gender identity, privacy, legacy, and a plethora of religious, historical, sociological, and ethical underpinnings, the challenges presented in such technological innovation are substantial. Nonetheless, the opportunities are significant and progressive. Because of in vitro fertilization, gestational and genetic surrogacy, posthumous conception, and mitochondrial replacement therapy, humans now have the opportunity to overcome infertility, gender obstacles to parentage, dynastic limitations, and diseases that have long plagued mothers and infants. However, challenges include the exploitation of surrogates, unequal access to ART services, possibilities of cloning …

Ancestral Dependence On Breast Stemness And Nucleotide Excision Repair In Breast Cancer Stem Cells In Novel Human Model Systems, Omar Ibrahim Jan 2018

Ancestral Dependence On Breast Stemness And Nucleotide Excision Repair In Breast Cancer Stem Cells In Novel Human Model Systems, Omar Ibrahim

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Precocious puberty, measured by thelarche or menarche, is a well-established breast cancer risk factor. Using a unique and patented tissue engineering system we established cell lines from 48 primary cultures of normal breast tissue from reduction mammoplasties and used them as an in vitro model of thelarche, quantifying episphere formation and ductal differentiation. Differential ductal formation was observed based on ancestry. In light of African American (AA) precocious thelarche both in vivo and as we observed in vitro, we hypothesized that AA women would exhibit an increased proportion of breast stem cells, with greater potency for differentiation. Five AA cell …

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

NER plays an important role in remediating DNA damage. Latimer et al., have previously shown nucleotideexcision repair (NER) to be intrinsically deficient in stage I sporadic BC by function and gene expression. Previous work performed on 12 isogenically matched stage I tumors and non-tumor adjacent (NTA) samples identified 2 types of NTA tissue with regard to functional NER. One type that represented 75% ofthe samples, had lower NER capacity, similar to the tumor (Low: Low pair). The other type had high NER relative to the tumor (High: Low pair). Two isogenic NTA/tumor cell line pairs representing these 2 types ofNTA …

Recent Data From Radiofrequency Denervation Trials Further Emphasise That Treating Nociception Is Not The Same As Treating Pain, Matthew K. Bagg, James H. Mcauley, G Lorimer Moseley, Benedict M. Wand

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Chronic low back pain is a condition that current health care provision is failing and we suggest that recent evidence from the interventional pain medicine field points to what these failings are. Radiofrequency denervation is performed on the presumption that denervation of a peripheral structure will eradicate or significantly reduce pain and improve function. The results of six moderately sized and well conducted clinical trials that demonstrate no efficacy and no real-world effectiveness for denervation procedures are a stark illustration of how flawed this approach is. We suggest that these results represent a line-in-the-sand for back pain research and management. …

Trunk Muscle Activity During Drop Jump Performance In Adolescent Athletes With Back Pain, T. Palsson, J. Caneiro, R. Hirata, D. Griffin, William Gibson, Mervyn Travers

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

It was with great interest we read the recently published article “Trunk Muscle Activity during Drop Jump Performance in Adolescent Athletes with Back Pain.” Investigating back pain (BP) in adolescents is commendable as there is growing evidence that for many, an experience of BP as early as 14 years of age may relate to ongoing pain in adulthood (Coenen et al., 2017). Indeed, the conventional narrative is changing as individual physical factors such as posture, use of schoolbags, and hypermobility are only weakly associated with adolescent BP. Rather, factors which predict BP at a young age are considered to …
