An Exploration Of Factors That Contribute To The High Attrition Rate Of African American Nursing Students, Shanell Hill Jan 2018

An Exploration Of Factors That Contribute To The High Attrition Rate Of African American Nursing Students, Shanell Hill

ETD Archive

Although African Americans represent the largest minority group, studies show they have the lowest success rates in nursing programs. According to the AACN (2013), “African American nursing students have the lowest graduation rate when compared to other minority groups.” The lack of minorities providing care negatively effects healthcare outcomes and accessibility. In order to increase the number of practicing African Americans nurses, it is essential to gain an understanding of the circumstances that lead to successes and failures. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological research study is to provide insight into the positive and negative experiences of African American nursing …

The present study describes the development of a novel confrontational naming test for the assessment of word finding and language abilities, and also serves as a tool for the assessment of effort. The test is comprised of two portions. The first portion consists of 40 colored drawings of day to day objects and is aimed at assessing verbal abilities, particularly word finding deficits. The second portion also involves the presentation of 40 colored drawings, each drawing comprised of the original object that was previously presented and two distractors, objects that were not previously presented. The present study aims to evaluate …

Investigating The Electrophysiology Of Long-Term Priming In Spoken Word Recognition, Erin K. Bell Jan 2018

Investigating The Electrophysiology Of Long-Term Priming In Spoken Word Recognition, Erin K. Bell

ETD Archive

When participants are listening to the same words spoken by different talkers, two types of priming are possible: repetition priming and talker-specific priming. Repetition priming refers to the exposure of a stimulus improving responses to a subsequent exposure. Talker-specific priming refers to the exposure of words spoken by same talkers improving responses relative to those same words spoken by different talkers. There are conflicting theories regarding whether talker-specific priming should be observed. Abstract representational theories suggest that episodic details (e.g., talker identity) are not stored in the mental lexicon, while episodic theories of the lexicon posit that lexical representations include …

The Moderating Role Of Emotion Regulation In The Relationship Between Stress And Inflammatory Bowel Disease Severity Among Diagnosed Individuals, Sarah M. Ghose Jan 2018

The Moderating Role Of Emotion Regulation In The Relationship Between Stress And Inflammatory Bowel Disease Severity Among Diagnosed Individuals, Sarah M. Ghose

ETD Archive

This study examined whether both perceived and objectively rated chronic stress are contributing external factors to altered Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) disease severity among diagnosed individuals. This study further examined whether emotion regulation (ER) acts as an ameliorative factor within this relationship. Of additional interest to this investigation was whether objectively rated stress (acquired via the UCLA Life Stress Interview) provided a unique contribution to this relationship. Recent investigations suggest that higher levels of perceived stress may result in increased IBD severity. Further, ER deficits may be associated with increased IBD disease activity in response to both chronic and perceived …

The Usefulness Of The Poreh Nonverbal Memory Test For The Assessment Of Response Bias, Marina Barboza Jan 2018

The Usefulness Of The Poreh Nonverbal Memory Test For The Assessment Of Response Bias, Marina Barboza

ETD Archive

In the field of neuropsychology, there is a need for reliable measures that assess for both memory and effort (response bias). A sample of college students were instructed to feign memory deficits. They were administered two well established measures of response bias, the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) and the Reliable Digits Span (RDS), as well as the Poreh Nonverbal Memory Test (PNMT). The study shows that all of the three measures were able to identify students who were coached to demonstrate memory deficits. A more detailed analysis showed that the TOMM and the PNMT produced higher sensitivity and specificity …

Provides an eco-system for the treatment facilities with an easy-to-use backend to constantly update their complex information …

A Mixed-Method Examination Of Patient Perceptions Of Ideal Physician Behavior And Overall Quality Of Care, Megan Rouse Jan 2018

A Mixed-Method Examination Of Patient Perceptions Of Ideal Physician Behavior And Overall Quality Of Care, Megan Rouse

Honors Program Theses

The present study examined three dimensions of physician characteristics and behaviors (knowledge, communication, and compassion) to better understand how patients perceive physicians and overall quality of care. This mixed-methods approach utilized both close- and open-ended survey questions to assess participants’ relationship with their physicians. In addition, participants wrote stories to describe best and worst experiences with physicians. Giving participants the opportunity to write stories in their own words allowed for a more nuanced understanding of the complexity of patients’ experiences, physician characteristics, and perceptions of overall quality of care. Results indicated that patients perceive physicians who are good communicators as …

El Salvador: Zika Virus, Annalia Fowler Jan 2018

El Salvador: Zika Virus, Annalia Fowler

Global Public Health

One of the current issues in El Salvador at the moment is the outbreak of Zika virus and the lack of understanding where it came from. Zika virus affects the population in many different ways. One of the most important ways that it affects the population is that it causes birth defects such as microcephaly and fetal death. In a country that already has a declining birth rate this could soon have grave effects on the population. As of right now El Salvador is working on an educational approach to stop the spread of the disease, as there is no …

In this article, I use peer reviewed and reliable articles to show the past and current issues that Rwanda has to face with the …

Venezuela Public Health Issue, Luke Vargas Jan 2018

Venezuela Public Health Issue, Luke Vargas

Global Public Health

While every country around the world faces a form of public health issues, the issues that the country of Venezuela faces are different. Their public health problem is not a disease that can be solved by science, or a cure. It’s a problem that can only be solved by the people within the county itself. The country of Venezuela now lacks the proper medical supplies needed to help cure diseases and normal vaccinations, and the only ones to blame is their government. Because their government has now refused to pay their debts to the surrounding countries they have now lost …

Roles Of Anti-Inflammatory Drugs And Systemic Inflammation In Neurovascular Coupling On Rodent, Jinsung Dho, Jiwon Ha, Hye Jin Park, Minah Suh Jan 2018

Roles Of Anti-Inflammatory Drugs And Systemic Inflammation In Neurovascular Coupling On Rodent, Jinsung Dho, Jiwon Ha, Hye Jin Park, Minah Suh

Summer Research

It is widely known that increased level of neuronal activity stimulates an inflammatory response in the brain and periphery tissue. A coordinated activity of the NVU cells such as microglia and astrocytes is necessary to regulate local inflammation in brain tissue. Recently, there is growing evidence that the NVU to be affected by the loss of Blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and permeability in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. AD and ALS) as a result from the long-term effects of neuroinflammation1 . In other words, any signaling used to elicit NVC during inflammation must pass through the BBB. Also, current findings have shown …

Structural Parameters Of Mnd Measured By X-Ray Diffraction, Daniel J. Kuiper, Paul Harper

Summer Research

In our lungs, there are lipids and lung proteins that work together to allow us to breathe. The proteins are known to encourage non-lamellar phases in lipids, but the function of this property for letting us to breathe is not well understood. The aim of my research was to qualify the behavior of the lipid MNd without any lung protein to allow for a comparison between the effects when formed naturally and when formed with lung protein to give a better understanding of what the protein is doing. Below is a diagram of an MNd molecule. In the presence of …

The Impact Of Neonatal Pain And Reduced Maternal Care On Brain And Behavioral Development, Sean Michael Mooney-Leber Jan 2018

The Impact Of Neonatal Pain And Reduced Maternal Care On Brain And Behavioral Development, Sean Michael Mooney-Leber

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) preterm infants are exposed to a multitude of stressors, which include both neonatal pain and reduced maternal care. Clinical and preclinical research has demonstrated that exposure to neonatal pain and reduced maternal care has a profound negative impact on brain and behavioral development. Currently, the biological mechanism by which both of these stressors impacts brain and behavioral outcomes remains widely unknown. To uncover a potential biological mechanism, the current dissertation project utilized a preclinical model of repetitive needle pokes and developed a novel model of reduced maternal care through tea-ball encapsulation. Briefly, rat …

Kilovoltage Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, Brian Loughery

Wayne State University Dissertations

Contrast enhanced kilovoltage radiotherapy could be a significant improvement over the standard of care in glioblastoma multiforme, but its potential benefit has been hindered by fears of insufficient dose falloff, high skin and skull dose, contrast delivery concerns, and high cost. This dissertation aims to address the validity of these fears.

Contrast delivery concerns are examined by assuming that sufficient dose can be safely delivered to the tumor. Iodine, gadolinium, and gold nanoparticle biological effect and delivery research is examined and the ideal contrast delivery methods are reported. Dose falloff and skull dose are then investigated through treatment planning and …

HIV mutates rapidly and infects CD4+ T cells, especially when they are activated. A vaccine targeting conserved, essential viral elements while limiting CD4+ T cell activation could be effective. Learning from natural immunity observed in a group of highly HIV-1 exposed seronegative Kenyan female sex workers, we are testing a novel candidate HIV vaccine targeting the 12 viral protease cleavage sites (PCSs) (the PCS vaccine), in comparison with a vaccine targeting full-length Gag and Env (the Gag/Env vaccine) in a Mauritian cynomolgus macaque/SIV model. In this study we evaluated these vaccines for induction of mucosal antibodies to SIV …

Pediatric Normothermia During Surgery, Shayna Marie Fleming Jan 2018

Pediatric Normothermia During Surgery, Shayna Marie Fleming

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract: Background: The World Health Organization estimated the number of surgical procedures for 2012 to be 312.9 million around the world (Weiser et al., 2016). Children may be at an elevated risk of hypothermia in the perioperative environment due to their size and inconsistent use of nursing interventions. Maintaining normothermia during surgery is vital, but practices between organizations and even nursing staff can affect hypothermia rates. Research has found that even mild hypothermia can increase the incidence of surgical site infections, the need for oxygen, adverse cardiac events, blood loss, changes in medication absorption, and impaired wound healing (Rosenberger, Politano, …
