Comparison Of Micro-Osteoperforation And Low Level Laser Therapy (Lllt) On Accelerated Tooth Movement – An Animal Study, Abelardo Daya Attie Jan 2018

Comparison Of Micro-Osteoperforation And Low Level Laser Therapy (Lllt) On Accelerated Tooth Movement – An Animal Study, Abelardo Daya Attie

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: Demand for orthodontic treatment is increasing amongst patients of all ages, including adults. Typically, a comprehensive orthodontic treatment requires two to three years of active tooth movement, which may not seem desirable for adults. Orthodontic appliances can impede proper oral hygiene and increase the risk of white spot lesions and caries. Other sequel of lengthy orthodontic treatment includes external apical root resorption, increased plaque index, increased level of dental caries and subsequent gingivitis, root resorption, gingival inflammation, and bone loss. Reduction of treatment time may reduce the risk of the undesirable sequel and increase the acceptance rate of orthodontic …

Effect Of Curcumin And Bromelian On Osteogenesis Of Gingiva Derived Stem Cells, Selin Avman Jan 2018

Effect Of Curcumin And Bromelian On Osteogenesis Of Gingiva Derived Stem Cells, Selin Avman

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are attractive cell sources for tissue engineering application because of their ability to proliferate and differentiate into mesenchymal tissues. MSCs derived from human gingiva are readily accessible and highly proliferative with the ability to differentiate into an osteogenic lineage, making them ideal sources for tissue regeneration of craniofacial defects. While dexamethasone is a traditional inducer of osteogenic differentiation, studies have shown that its prolonged presence in culture medium may have toxic effects on osteoblasts. Many antioxidants play a vital role in promoting osteogenic differentiation and offer a potential alternative to dexamethasone. It has been demonstrated …

Assessing Beliefs, Attitudes, And Perceived Risks Of Hiv As Predictors Of Hiv Testing Behavior Among Seniors In The Coachella Valley, California, Gillian Sealy

Health Sciences Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2017), at the end of 2014, approximately 428,724 people 50 years or older were diagnosed and living with HIV in the United States. A contributing factor to the high incidence of HIV in this population is unknown HIV/AIDS serostatus (Fenton, 2007). The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2018), terms serostatus as the state of having or not having detectable antibodies against a specific antigen (https://aidsinfo.nih.gov/understanding-hiv-aids/glossary/1632/serostatus). Contributing to the lack of knowledge about HIV serostatus, is that those over 50 are less likely to be tested for HIV even …

Altered Ratio Of T Follicular Helper Cells To T Follicular Regulatory Cells Correlates With Autoreactive Antibody Response In Simian Immunodeficiency Virus–Infected Rhesus Macaques, Wenjin Fan, Andrew James Demers, Yanmin Wan, Qingsheng Li

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Individuals with chronic HIV-1 infection have an increased prevalence of autoreactive Abs. Many of the isolated HIV broadly neutralizing Abs from these individuals are also autoreactive. However, the underlying mechanism(s) that produce these autoreactive broadly neutralizing Abs remains largely unknown. The highly regulated coordination among B cells, T follicular helper (TFH) cells, and T follicular regulatory (TFR) cells in germinal centers (GCs) of peripheral lymphatic tissues (LTs) is essential for defense against pathogens while also restricting autoreactive responses. We hypothesized that an altered ratio of TFH/TFR cells in the GC contributes to the …

Combining Degradations: The Effect Of Background Noise On Intelligibility Of Disordered Speech, Sarah E. Yoho Leopold, Stephanie A. Borrie Jan 2018

Combining Degradations: The Effect Of Background Noise On Intelligibility Of Disordered Speech, Sarah E. Yoho Leopold, Stephanie A. Borrie

Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Faculty Publications

The effect of background noise on intelligibility of disordered speech was assessed. Speech-shaped noise was mixed with neurologically healthy (control) and disordered (dysarthric) speech at a series of signal-to-noise ratios. In addition, bandpass filtered control and dysarthric speech conditions were assessed to determine the effect of noise on both naturally and artificially degraded speech. While significant effects of both the amount of noise and the type of speech were revealed, no interaction between the two factors was observed, in either the broadband or filtered testing conditions. Thus, it appears that there is no multiplicative effect of the presence of background …

Ms Environmental Biology Capstone Project, Annamaria Marcel Jan 2018

Ms Environmental Biology Capstone Project, Annamaria Marcel

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Due to the worldwide decline of biodiversity, protected nature reserves are necessary for species facing extinction. Many frog species have been experiencing rapid population decline and extinction due to the threat of the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), which inflicts the highly transmittable and deadly disease chytridiomycosis. Chytridiomycosis causes increased skin tissue growth which disrupts respiration and the maintenance of water balance, which can ultimately lead to death. Certain ecological and geographical characteristics have been studied in order to assess their influence on Bd’s prevalence. Specifically, it is hypothesized that high elevations, lotic habitats, and low species richness have a positive …

The Impact Of Adjacent-Letter Flanking Bigrams On Lexical Decision Performance, Gina M. Cascone, Deion L. Colbert Jan 2018

The Impact Of Adjacent-Letter Flanking Bigrams On Lexical Decision Performance, Gina M. Cascone, Deion L. Colbert

Undergraduate Research Posters 2018

Some models of word identification hypothesize that the word recognition system includes units responsive to bigrams (letter pairs). Grainger, Mathot, and Vitu (2014) and Palinski (2016) found that target-flanking bigrams consisting of letters adjacent in targets (e.g., OG FROG FR) affect decisions about whether letter strings are words: Bigram-letter order, but not proximity of bigram letters to their locations in the targets, affected performance. (Average performance was better with FR FROG OG and OG FROG FR than with RF FROG GO and GO FROG RF, but no different with FR FROG OG and RF FROG GO than with OG FROG …

Pediatrics

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the use of high-fidelity simulators with multidisciplinary teaching on self-reported confidence in residents.

Methods: A total of 26 residents participated in a session led by a pediatric faculty member and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit transport nurse using a high-fidelity pediatric simulator. Multiple scenarios were presented and each resident took turns in various roles. Pre-intervention surveys based on a 5-point Likert-type scale were given before the scenarios and were compared to the results of identical post-intervention surveys.

Results: Statistically significant (p < 0.05) pre to post gains for self-confidence were observed. Improvements in confidence were analyzed using the mean difference. The largest improvement in confidence was seen in the ability to treat neonatal respiratory arrest. This was followed by the ability to supervise/run a code, and the ability to place an umbilical venous catheter.

Conclusion: These results revealed that high-fidelity simulation-based …

Social Media And Negative Aspects Of Well-Being: Does Fomo Play A Role?, Casey J. Mcandrew Jan 2018

Social Media And Negative Aspects Of Well-Being: Does Fomo Play A Role?, Casey J. Mcandrew

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

Fear of missing out (FOMO) is a relatively new concept, however researchers have found that FOMO and social media use cause negative aspects of well-being, such as depression, anxiety, stress (Alabi, 2013; Alavi, 2011) and lack of academic motivation (Jacobsen and Forste, 2011). When using a correlational design, the current study examined the associations between social media engagement and negative aspects of well-being, while also examining the mediating role of FOMO between these variables. Participants (198 college students, M = 19 years old, 86 percent female, 74 percent Caucasian) completed online surveys, where participants reported on their levels of social …

Giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta) is one of the most noxious invasive species in the world. The fern is known to have primary, secondary, and tertiary growth forms, which are also commonly hypothesized as growth stages. The identification of these forms is primarily based on the size and folding status of the floating leaves. However, we identified 12 forms in the greenhouse and the field. Our experiments showed that the folding of floating leaves is a reversible trait dependent on water access. The floating leaves quickly fold in response to water shortage, reducing water loss and needs, decreasing growth, …

Zika Virus (ZIKV) is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites. It can also be transmitted during sexual intercourse and in utero from mother to fetus. To gain preliminary insight into ZIKV pathology and immune responses on route of transmission, rhesus macaques (RMs) were inoculated with ZIKV (PRVABC59) via intravaginal (IVAG) (n = 3) or subcutaneous (sub Q) (n = 2) routes. Systemic ZIKV infection was observed in all RMs, regardless of the route of inoculation. After 9 days postinfection (dpi), ZIKV was not detected in the plasma of IVAG- and sub-Q-inoculated RMs. Importantly, RMs harbored ZIKV up to 60 …

Effects Of Adolescent Thc Exposure On The Prefrontal Gabaergic System: Implications For Schizophrenia-Related Psychopathology., Justine Renard, Walter J Rushlow, Steven R Laviolette

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Marijuana is the most commonly used drug of abuse among adolescents. Considerable clinical evidence supports the hypothesis that adolescent neurodevelopmental exposure to high levels of the principal psychoactive component in marijuana, -delta-9-tetrahydrocanabinol (THC), is associated with a high risk of developing psychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia later in life. This marijuana-associated risk is believed to be related to increasing levels of THC found within commonly used marijuana strains. Adolescence is a highly vulnerable period for the development of the brain, where the inhibitory GABAergic system plays a pivotal role in the maturation of regulatory control mechanisms in the central nervous …
