Faith Community Nurse Care Transitions Intervention Feasibility Project, Jennifer Palagi
Faith Community Nurse Care Transitions Intervention Feasibility Project, Jennifer Palagi
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: A major national-to-local healthcare quality and safety goal is to reduce hospital readmissions, which are considered preventable patient harm. While the literature shows the impact of using care transitions programs to reduce readmissions, few studies have utilized faith community nurses (FCNs) within care transition programs. An FCN-integrated care transitions program potentially could help fill the gap in community clinical support for chronic illness care. Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center (SARMC), a Catholic hospital in Boise, Idaho, sponsors an FCN network within many Southwest Idaho faith communities. This presented a local opportunity to create and test the feasibility of an …
Genetic Moderators Of Cognitive Decline In The Health And Retirement Study, Shannon K. Runge
Genetic Moderators Of Cognitive Decline In The Health And Retirement Study, Shannon K. Runge
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current dissertation used a gene x environment (G x E) approach to examine the independent and interactive effects of specific genetic variants and participation in physical and cognitive/social activities (PA and CSA) on cognitive performance in 4,764 participants of the Health and Retirement Study. Using three-wave data, three sets of multi-level growth models were conducted to examine baseline, longitudinal, and interactive effects of genotype (i.e., ApoE, COMT, and BDNF) and CSA/PA on performance across five cognitive measures: immediate, delayed and total word recall, and serial 7s and backwards counting.
At baseline, the ApoE ε4 allele predicted …

Preventing unintended pregnancy is a topic of global and domestic importance. In 2013, almost 290,000 maternal deaths occurred due to complications of pregnancy or child-birth; 99% of these deaths were in developing countries (World Health Organizations, 2014). Additionally, more than 4 million infants died before reaching their first birthday, a large number being attributed to multiple factors related to unhealthy timing of pregnancy (World Health Organization, 2012). The World Health Organization (2012) asserts the ability of women to adequately control the timing and spacing of pregnancy can dramatically decrease maternal mortality due to pregnancy complications and unsafe abortions, decrease infant …

Exploring The Relationship Between Severity Of Illness And Human Milk Volume In Very Low Birth Weight And Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants Over Six Weeks, Shannon Leigh Morse
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Very low birth weight and extremely low birth weight neonates have tremendous risk of mortality. This is a grave concern; however, survival alone is not the goal of neonatal intensive care. Survival, along with a reduction or elimination of life long morbidity is the aim of neonatal intensive care.
Human milk is known as the best nutrition for babies and a growing body of evidence supports that human milk is critical in helping these fragile neonates mitigate the overwhelming risks they face. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between neonatal severity of illness and human …

Practices Supporting Breastfeeding In The Nicu: A National Survey, Elizabeth E. Nottingham
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
Babies who are born early are at risk for developing serious life-threatening conditions and developmental delays. Providing babies with breast milk, and helping them breast feed has been shown to reduce the chances of these conditions and delays. However, hospitals across the country have adopted wildly different practices when it comes to feeding these babies. By understanding the current practices in hospitals across the country, we can begin to understand how to affect change.

Exploring The Effects Of Dance As A Therapeutic Media To Assess Attunement In Co-Occupation Between Primary Caregiver And Infant, Kelly R. Frye, Natalie A. Perez
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
This presentation shares findings from a five-week intervention group designed to explore the effects of therapeutic dance-based activities on the parent-infant bond. Dance was chosen as a therapeutic activity because it promotes simultaneous involvement of both the parent and child in a shared co-occupation. Dance involves non-verbal communication and relies heavily on vision, touch, and trust, all of which are in an infants’ repertoire. In the occupational therapy literature, co-occupations are defined as activities in which two or more persons are simultaneously engaged in related experiences (Pickens, Pizur-Barnekow, 2009). Co-occupations involve shared meaning; they include dimensions of shared physicality, shared …

In patients with asthma, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides direct measurements of regional ventilation heterogeneity, the etiology of which is not well-understood, nor is the relationship of ventilation abnormalities with lung mechanics. In addition, respiratory resistance and reactance are often abnormal in asthmatics and the frequency dependence of respiratory resistance is thought to reflect ventilation heterogeneity. We acquiredMRIventilation defect maps, forced expiratory volume in one-second (FEV1), and airways resistance (Raw) measurements, and used a computational airway model to explore the relationship of ventilation defect percent (VDP) with simulated measurements of respiratory system resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs).MRIventilation defect maps were …

Detecting Gene-Gene Interactions Using A Permutation-Based Random Forest Method, Jing Li, James D. Malley, Angeline S. Andrew, Margaret R. Karagas, Jason H. Moore
Dartmouth Scholarship
Identifying gene-gene interactions is essential to understand disease susceptibility and to detect genetic architectures underlying complex diseases. Here, we aimed at developing a permutation-based methodology relying on a machine learning method, random forest (RF), to detect gene-gene interactions. Our approach called permuted random forest (pRF) which identified the top interacting single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) pairs by estimating how much the power of a random forest classification model is influenced by removing pairwise interactions.
Enhancing Nurse-Physician Communication And Collaboration, Pamela D. Missi
Enhancing Nurse-Physician Communication And Collaboration, Pamela D. Missi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
In healthcare organizations today, creating a culture of safety is critically important. Communication failures among healthcare providers have been linked to 70% of annual sentinel events. Seventy-six percent of individuals experiencing a sentinel event die (Joint Commission, 2009). Lack of good communication behavior between nurses and physicians has been recognized as a cause of preventable harm to patients (Institute of Medicine, 2004; Zwarenstein & Reeves, 2006). In hospital settings, communication failures are linked to increases in length of stay, patient harm, resource utilization, more rapid turnover, and caregiver dissatisfaction (Dingley et al., 2008). Numerous national organizations and commissions have officially …

The purpose of this research study was to document the feeding guidelines from medical associations, understand what pediatricians are recommending to new mothers, and to capture the response from mothers regarding their understanding and personal practices in feeding. Previous studies have found that mothers were not following feeding recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Furthermore, the role of infant rice cereal as an early first food is currently under debate. Qualitative research was conducted through interviews with five mothers of children under 2 years, five healthcare providers in pediatric settings, and three policy experts. The Theory of Reasoned …
Breastfeeding Intention Within A Rural Postpartum Population: Does Education Matter?, Brooke Hawkins
Breastfeeding Intention Within A Rural Postpartum Population: Does Education Matter?, Brooke Hawkins
DNP Projects
Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to determine breastfeeding intention in a rural population after receiving education from a certified lactation consultant.
Review of the Literature: The benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child are clearly stated in the literature. Despite the known benefits, rates of breastfeeding are decreased within rural populations. Previous research suggests education about breastfeeding benefits is beneficial in increasing these rates. In particular, previous studies focused on the contributing factors affecting a mother’s decision to breast or formula feed. However, few studies were found strictly evaluating breastfeeding intention after receiving formal …

Have We Forgotten Just Who Controls Us?, Robert Grosz
Have We Forgotten Just Who Controls Us?, Robert Grosz
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Do we take full responsibility for our actions? Have we lost touch with whether or not we rely on our government, family, religion, profession, “boss” to control our actions? We should keep in mind that when we talk or think about control of our behavior we infer making a decision. There is a difference between influencing and controlling. Self-Control is an aspect of behavior that is independent of self-image; self-worth; self-value; self-esteem; and self-respect, even though all are frequently used interchangeably, and may influence each other.

Abstract
Objective: This study attempted to establish a consistent measurement technique of the readability of a state-wide Certified Nursing Assistant’s (CNA) certification exam. Background: Monitoring the readability level of an exam helps ensure all test versions do not exceed the maximum reading level of the exam, and that knowledge of the subject matter, rather than reading ability, is being assessed. Method: A two part approach was used to specify and evaluate readability. First, two methods (Microsoft Word® (MSW) software and published readability formulae) were used to calculate Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) and Flesch-Kincaid Reading Grade Level (FKRGL) for multiple …

The Effect Of Noise Fluctuation And Spectral Bandwidth On Gap Detection, Joseph W. Hall Iii, Emily Buss, Erol J. Ozmeral, John H. Grose
Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Publications
Experiment 1 investigated gap detection for random and low-fluctuation noise (LFN) markers as a function of bandwidth (25–1600 Hz), level [40 or 75 dB sound pressure level (SPL)], and center frequency (500–4000 Hz). Gap thresholds for random noise improved as bandwidth increased from 25 to 1600 Hz, but there were only minor effects related to center frequency and level. For narrow bandwidths, thresholds were lower for LFN than random markers; this difference extended to higher bandwidths at the higher center frequencies and was particularly large at high stimulus level. Effects of frequency and level were broadly consistent with the idea …
