Preparation Of Myod Mrna For The Differentiation Of Stem Cells Into Muscle Cells, Stephanie A. Ye May 2016

Preparation Of Myod Mrna For The Differentiation Of Stem Cells Into Muscle Cells, Stephanie A. Ye

Honors Theses

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are characterized by their two special properties: pluripotency and self-renewal. Pluripotency is the ability of ESCs to differentiate into any cell type upon expression of specific proteins called transcription factors. In order to induce differentiation, transcription factors specific for the particular cell type have to be introduced and expressed in the ESCs. The introduction of transcription factors can be achieved by using either DNA, RNA, or protein. According to the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology, DNA is first transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA), which is then translated to make a functional protein molecule. Among the available …

Effects Of A Flavonoid-Rich Diet On Gut Microbiota Composition And Production Of Trimethylamine In Human Subjects, Justin S. Bell May 2016

Effects Of A Flavonoid-Rich Diet On Gut Microbiota Composition And Production Of Trimethylamine In Human Subjects, Justin S. Bell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is a major public health concern worldwide. It has been theorized that diets rich in fruits and vegetables may be protective against the development of cardiovascular disease mainly through their high content of flavonoids. Flavonoids were thought to influence traditional risk factors of cardiovascular disease such as blood pressure, lipid profile, and systemic inflammation. Recent clinical studies have shown that this may not be the case. The production of trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) by the gut microbiota from dietary sources of choline has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. The objectives of this …

Identifying And Reducing Risk Of The Female Athlete Triad In Division I Athletes, Jennifer Day May 2016

Identifying And Reducing Risk Of The Female Athlete Triad In Division I Athletes, Jennifer Day

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Physically active females, or female athletes, are at risk for the condition known as the female athlete triad (Triad). The Triad is made up of three components that are distinctly separate, but intertwined: consuming inadequate energy for how much they are exercising, poor bone health, and problems with their menstrual periods. When female athletes don’t consume enough energy for how much they exercise, there can be hormonal imbalances, causing the body to conserve energy from some important functions including menstruation, and increased bone turnover resulting in a higher risk of stress fractures and early osteoporosis. Female athletes at risk for …

Art Therapy And Its Impact Upon Marital Communication With Geriatric Adults Suffering From Dementia And Their Spousal Caregivers: An Exploratory Review And Research Study, Ashlyn G. Kubacak

School of Social Work Undergraduate Honors Theses

The World Health Organization estimated that 47.5 million people across the globe were living with dementia in 2015, and this number is expected to increase and eventually double by 2030. The cost of caregiving for someone who has dementia is substantial, with estimated federal costs fluctuating between 157 billion and 215 billion dollars annually. Sixty percent of caregivers rate the emotional strain of caregiving to be “high to extremely high”, and 40% of caregivers are diagnosed with depression. It is therefore important to provide support not only for those persons with dementia, but also for their caregivers in order to …

The Effects Of The Fifa 11+ Warm Up Program In Female Collegiate Soccer Athletes, Stacey O’Neill May 2016

The Effects Of The Fifa 11+ Warm Up Program In Female Collegiate Soccer Athletes, Stacey O’Neill

Graduate Theses

As of 2010 there were over 265 million registered soccer athletes worldwide, and in particular, the number of women players were rapidly increasing (Soligard, et al., (2010). Consequently, playing soccer accounts for approximately one quarter of all injuries in sport, and due to its nature of jumping, pivoting and cross-cutting, the majority of these are non-contact, lower extremity injuries. Therefore, playing soccer entails a substantial amount of injury risk for its participants. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the FIFA 11+ Warm Up Program in collegiate female soccer athletes.

The Health Promoting Schools concept helps schools to promote health in a sustainable and long-term fashion. However, developing the capacity to promote health in this way can be challenging when a busy teaching curriculum must be fulfilled. This study aimed to identify factors which affect the acceptability of health promotion programmes to the everyday school environment.

Semi-structured qualitative interviews were audio-taped with primary school teachers in one Irish county and transcribed verbatim. The resulting transcripts were analysed using content analysis.

Thirty-one teachers were interviewed. The factors which may adversely affect the acceptability of health promotion programmes include the: attitude of …

A Model For The Voltammetric Behaviour Of Tio2 Memristors, John Cassidy, Daryl Fox, Tony Betts May 2016

A Model For The Voltammetric Behaviour Of Tio2 Memristors, John Cassidy, Daryl Fox, Tony Betts

Articles

Abstract A model is solved based on the Nernst Planck equation to calculate the diffusion and migration currents for a species in a thin layer (about 200 nm) confined between two electrodes. This is proposed to account for the current voltage behaviour of a memristor constructed in a similar fashion. At the working electrode, an electroactive species is oxidised and at the counter electrode, the same species is reduced. Upon application of a simple voltammetric waveform, the migration current exhibits a resistance profile at slow scan rates and hysteresis at faster scan rates, indicative of memristor behavior.

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Heart Failure (HF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States with over 5.1 million documented cases (Go, et al., 2013). Patients diagnosed with HF are required to learn a multitude of self-care behaviors to prevent exacerbations, worsening symptoms, and progression of their disease. Further investigation of the relationship between low health literacy levels and health related quality of life (HRQoL) in the patient with HF may help to develop a better understanding of the health education needs of this growing population.

An evaluation of the effects of health literacy scores on the measured HRQoL of …

Nursing Perception Of Psychogenic Nonepileptic Spells: Improving Patient Outcomes, Amanda J. Cramer Apr 2016

Nursing Perception Of Psychogenic Nonepileptic Spells: Improving Patient Outcomes, Amanda J. Cramer

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Patients with psychogenic nonepileptic spells (PNES) have generally poor outcomes and many fail to engage in evidence-based treatments (Thompson et al., 2013). Negative healthcare provider perceptions have been implicated as a barrier to patient engagement in treatment recommendations for PNES (Whitehead, Kandler, & Reuber, 2013; Worsely et al., 2011). Illness perception of these patients has been evaluated from the perspective of physicians in multiple settings but perceptions by nurses are not well studied despite the close interactions that nurses have with these patients.

This project used Pender’s health promotion model to collect information about the nursing experience with patients with …

Early Sport Specialization: Overuse Injury And Burnout, Jessica J. Mcclelland Apr 2016

Early Sport Specialization: Overuse Injury And Burnout, Jessica J. Mcclelland

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

There are an increasing number of opportunities for today’s youth to participate in year-round sport organizations that promote early sport specialization before the age of fifteen. Early sport specialization is linked to a higher rate of overuse injury of frequently used muscle groups. The physical, mental, and psychological demands of early sport specialization increase likelihood of burnout and cessation of sport participation. Early sport generalization allows physiological and psychological rest and recovery in youth athletes that lead to decreased injury rates and less burnout with more individuals continuing to participate in competitive sports throughout the collegiate years. The purpose of …

The Nurse Executive Role In Implementing Evidence Based Practice (Ebp) At The Point Of Care, Kimberly Ann Malcolm Mrs. Apr 2016

The Nurse Executive Role In Implementing Evidence Based Practice (Ebp) At The Point Of Care, Kimberly Ann Malcolm Mrs.

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Scientific knowledge is available to guide point of care practice. Due to reported barriers, however, implementation of evidence-based care is not the norm. Current literature supports that knowledge and beliefs about evidence-based practice are related to the extent nurses engage in evidence-based practice. Additionally, current literature describes the positive effects nurse administrators can have on employment of evidence-based practice. The focus of this student nurse executive’s DNP scholarly project, therefore, was to improve use of evidence-based practice by nurses at the point of care using an evidence-based practice benchmark (at the rural Midwestern hospital where employed), specifically beta-blocker administration by …
