Biosand Water Filter Evaluation: Meta-Evaluation And Pilot Study Of Field Use Indicators, Bethesda O'Connell May 2016

Biosand Water Filter Evaluation: Meta-Evaluation And Pilot Study Of Field Use Indicators, Bethesda O'Connell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diarrheal diseases are a global public health burden, killing 1.8 million people annually. Diarrhea disproportionately affects children and those in poverty. Most diarrheal cases can be prevented through safe drinking water, basic hygiene and/or sanitation measures, with drinking water interventions having the most impact on reducing diarrheal disease. A meta-evaluation was completed of studies evaluating a specific household water treatment method, the biosand water filter. Results from the meta-evaluation illustrate that biosand water filters improve drinking water quality and reduce diarrheal disease. However, there is no generally agreed upon field method for determining biosand water filter effectiveness that is useable …

Sa-4-1bbl As A Modulator Of Innate, Adaptive, And Regulatory Immunity : Implications For Cancer Prevention And Treatment., Hampartsoum Barsoumian May 2016

Sa-4-1bbl As A Modulator Of Innate, Adaptive, And Regulatory Immunity : Implications For Cancer Prevention And Treatment., Hampartsoum Barsoumian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

SA-4-1BBL is a recombinant costimulatory molecule that is active in its soluble form and has pleiotropic effects on the functions of innate, adaptive, and regulatory immune cells. We have previously shown that SA-4-1BBL makes CD4+ T conventional cells (Tconvs) resistant to suppression by CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ T regulatory cells (Tregs). The mechanistic basis of this observation is the subject of this study. We demonstrate that Tconvs, but not Tregs, are the direct targets of SA-4-1BBL-mediated evasion of Treg suppression without contribution from antigen presenting cells (APCs). SA-4-1BBL engagement with its receptor, 4-1BB, on Tconvs resulted in the production of high levels of …

Effect Of Photographs Of Visible Genetic Conditions On Quality Of Life Perceptions, Christina Falugi May 2016

Effect Of Photographs Of Visible Genetic Conditions On Quality Of Life Perceptions, Christina Falugi

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Historically, medical photographs are used to demonstrate dysmorphic features and characteristic presentations of genetic conditions. Traditional, pictorial depictions of genetic conditions typically involve nude subjects against walls to emphasize their features. These stark, black and white photographs may negatively influence students’ perceptions of the depicted individual. Natural photographs which include individuals in non-clinical environments may impact perceptions. To assess the influence of photographs on a viewer’s perception, 649 students from medical, nursing, genetic counseling and dental programs were surveyed in a cross-over study. Students were randomized to view a traditional or a natural photograph of three distinct genetic conditions followed …

Understanding Structural And Functional Mechanisms Of Emi1 Inhibition Of The Anaphase Promoting Complex, Edmond Randall Watson May 2016

Understanding Structural And Functional Mechanisms Of Emi1 Inhibition Of The Anaphase Promoting Complex, Edmond Randall Watson

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Healthy, reproducing cells create and destroy proteins in an ordered manner. Both the concentration and localization of protein pools is important to regulate the many cellular processes necessary for the life of the cell. In order to produce new proteins, cells degrade existing materials such as proteins and organelles that are dispensable or troublesome in order to recycle their raw components. Degradation is accomplished largely through two major pathways: in bulk through processes such as autophagy and phagocytosis, or in a targeted manner through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Autophagy utilizes an encompassing body to encapsulate targets and surrounding materials for decomposition …

Interaction Between Two E3 Ligases, Nedd8ylated Cullin And Hhari, Kheewoong Baek May 2016

Interaction Between Two E3 Ligases, Nedd8ylated Cullin And Hhari, Kheewoong Baek

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

RBR (RING1-in between RING-RING2) is a special type of E3 ubiquitin ligase containing three zinc-binding RING (Really Interesting New Gene) domains, while adopting mechanisms of HECT (Homologous to E6-AP Carboxyl Terminus) for substrate ubiquitination. Most well known RBRs include Parkin and HOIP, which are associated with Parkinson’s disease and innate immune deficiency. However, it is not well known how the RBR proteins gain activity, as they are known to be autoinhibited. Here I show that a specific F430A, E431A, E503A triple mutation of RBR protein HHARI (Human homologue of Ariadne) and its interaction with NEDD8ylated cullin RING ligase can both …

Elementary Educators' Perspective Of Physical Education And The Physical Education Teacher, Jennifer M. Garcia May 2016

Elementary Educators' Perspective Of Physical Education And The Physical Education Teacher, Jennifer M. Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

Physical education continues to have the reputation it has had for years of being a subject of marginalization and of least importance in the school curriculum. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the perceptions of educators of physical education and the physical education teacher in the Rio Grande Valley. The researcher attempts to find, understand, and describe the perceptions of the educator’s view of this subject matter. Statistical significance was set at the .05 level for both tests of analyses. The researcher offers the null hypothesis of no difference between educator’s perception of PE …

The Relationship Between Entity Beliefs And Socioeconomic Status-Based Rejection Sensitivity: Academic Achievement In A Predominantly Hispanic Sample, Anna Kushner May 2016

The Relationship Between Entity Beliefs And Socioeconomic Status-Based Rejection Sensitivity: Academic Achievement In A Predominantly Hispanic Sample, Anna Kushner

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has shown that entity beliefs can moderate or buffer the impact of class-based rejection sensitivity on expected and official grade point averages of low-income college students. This study attempted to replicate previous research, which found that class-based rejection sensitivity (RS-class) and entity beliefs had negative main effects on academic outcomes (grade point average), and that entity beliefs served as a moderator in the relationship between RS-class and academic outcomes. While the predicted relationships were not replicated, this study found that higher acculturation scores are related to greater levels of academic achievement as measured by GPA. This attempted replication …

Strategies Of Balancing: Regulation Of Posture As A Complex Phenomenon, Allison Leich Hilbun May 2016

Strategies Of Balancing: Regulation Of Posture As A Complex Phenomenon, Allison Leich Hilbun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The complexity of the interface between the muscular system and the nervous system is still elusive. We investigated how the neuromuscular system functions and how it is influenced by various perturbations. Postural stability was selected as the model system, because this system provides complex output, which could indicate underlying mechanisms and feedback loops of the neuromuscular system. We hypothesized that aging, physical pain, and mental and physical perturbations affect balancing strategy, and based on these observations, we constructed a model that simulates many aspects of the neuromuscular system. Our results show that aging changes the control strategy of balancing from …

An Investigation Into Formulation And Therapeutic Effectiveness Of Nanoparticle Drug Delivery For Select Pharmaceutical Agents, Dustin Cooper May 2016

An Investigation Into Formulation And Therapeutic Effectiveness Of Nanoparticle Drug Delivery For Select Pharmaceutical Agents, Dustin Cooper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Drug based nanoparticle (NP) formulations have gained considerable attention over the past decade for their use in various drug delivery systems. NPs have been shown to increase bioavailability, decrease side effects of highly toxic drugs, and prolong drug release. Furthermore, polymer based, biodegradable nanodelivery has become increasing popular in the field of NP formulation because of their high degree of compatibility and low rate of toxicity. Due to their popularity, commercially available polymers such as poly lactic acid (PLA), poly glycolic acid (PGA) and polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) are commonly used in the development and design of new nano based delivery …

Investigation Of Novel Functions For Dna Damage Response And Repair Proteins In Escherichia Coli And Humans, Benjamin A. Hilton May 2016

Investigation Of Novel Functions For Dna Damage Response And Repair Proteins In Escherichia Coli And Humans, Benjamin A. Hilton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Endogenous and exogenous agents that can damage DNA are a constant threat to genome stability in all living cells. In response, cells have evolved an array of mechanisms to repair DNA damage or to eliminate the cells damaged beyond repair. One of these mechanisms is nucleotide excision repair (NER) which is the major repair pathway responsible for removing a wide variety of bulky DNA lesions. Deficiency, or mutation, in one or several of the NER repair proteins is responsible for many diseases, including cancer. Prokaryotic NER involves only three proteins to recognize and incise a damaged site, while eukaryotic NER …

Women And Healthcare In Appalachia: Impeding Circumstance And The Role Of Technology, Ashley Cano May 2016

Women And Healthcare In Appalachia: Impeding Circumstance And The Role Of Technology, Ashley Cano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For decades, healthcare access and quality in central and southern Appalachia have trailed the rest of the country. Entrenched poverty and low educational attainment compound healthcare problems. This study examines the healthcare obstacles women encounter in southern and central Appalachia and analyzes how technology use, such as Internet searching and social media affect women’s healthcare decisions. Data were analyzed from four focus groups conducted with women from the region. Results indicate that seeing a physician or not did not influence women’s propensity to search the Internet for health-related information or to seek support through social media sites. Additionally, women reported …

Spirituality And Psychological Well-Being Among Als Caregivers: Hope And Perceived Stress As Mediators, Bridget R. Jeter May 2016

Spirituality And Psychological Well-Being Among Als Caregivers: Hope And Perceived Stress As Mediators, Bridget R. Jeter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The empirical study of the salutary relationship between spirituality/religiousness and psychological well-being is burgeoning. However, mechanisms of this association have received less empirical attention. Theory suggests that spirituality/religiousness may lead to positive psychological characteristics such as hope, which may function as a means of coping in the context of a significant stressor or stressful situation. The perceived burden and stress associated with caring for individuals with chronic illnesses such as ALS is significant, and caregivers may be at risk for increased symptoms of depression, symptoms of anxiety, somatic symptoms, and other deleterious psychological well-being related outcomes. Within the context of …

Plants, Prions And Possibilities: Current Understanding And Significance Of Prion Uptake Into Plants, Tracy A. Nichols

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an infectious, neurodegenerative disease of deer (white-tailed and mule), elk, moose, sika deer and muntjac caused by a misfolded version of a normally occurring protein. The notion that CWD could be spread indirectly via the environment has been documented and accepted in the scientific community for quite some time. Deer and elk consume soil, inhale dust and lick objects that have infectious material on them, resulting in chronic, low dose exposure. Surface contamination of plants with urine or feces is likely an additional source of exposure via ingestion and has been modeled in the laboratory …

Integration Of Multi-Platform High-Dimensional Omic Data, Xuebei An

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The development of high-throughput biotechnologies have made data accessible from different platforms, including RNA sequencing, copy number variation, DNA methylation, protein lysate arrays, etc. The high-dimensional omic data derived from different technological platforms have been extensively used to facilitate comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms and to determine personalized health treatments. Although vital to the progress of clinical research, the high dimensional multi-platform data impose new challenges for data analysis. Numerous studies have been proposed to integrate multi-platform omic data; however, few have efficiently and simultaneously addressed the problems that arise from high dimensionality and complex correlations.

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Infants with single ventricle require staged cardiac surgery, with stage I typically performed shortly after birth, stage II at 4 to 6 months of age, and stage III at 3 to 5 years of age. There is a high risk of interstage mortality and morbidity after infants are discharged from the hospital between stages I and II. Traditional home monitoring requires caregivers to record measurements of weight and oxygen saturation into a binder and requires families to assume a surveillance role. We have developed a tablet PC-based solution that provides secure and nearly instantaneous transfer of patient information to a …

An Evaluation Of College Students’ Use Of Social Media In Nutrition Education For Lifestyle Behavior Changes, Cassandra Crawford-Ciglar May 2016

An Evaluation Of College Students’ Use Of Social Media In Nutrition Education For Lifestyle Behavior Changes, Cassandra Crawford-Ciglar

All Theses And Dissertations

Behavior change is a process. College students routinely have poor eating habits during a time of life that can negatively impact health outcomes for the adult years. While knowledge of nutrition is essential to promote health and wellness, other components are required to change behavior. Specifically, nutrition education must be paired with behavior change skills or goal setting strategies in order for a change to occur. In a college classroom setting, many examples of such strategies already exist. Literature supports evidence that interventions combining social media and behavior change techniques incorporating online social networks may be effective. The purpose of …

Expanding Interprofessional Learning Opportunities: How Dental Hygiene Administrators And Faculty Perceive Interprofessional Education, Cristina Casa May 2016

Expanding Interprofessional Learning Opportunities: How Dental Hygiene Administrators And Faculty Perceive Interprofessional Education, Cristina Casa

All Theses And Dissertations

The health care system has undergone transformation, implementing an interprofessional approach to patient care. Professionals have formed collaborative practice groups that effectively respond to the intricacies of today’s medical industry. Dental hygienists are underemployed in these teams. This has a direct effect on dental hygiene academia because education is the basis for practice. Interprofessional education (IPE) has been proposed as the strategy to adequately address this issue; however, many dental hygiene programs do not focus on shared teaching and learning.

This mixed methodology study documented the perspectives of dental hygiene administrators and faculty at higher education institutions in the Northeast …

A Model For The Voltammetric Behaviour Of Tio2 Memristors, John Cassidy, Daryl Fox, Tony Betts May 2016

A Model For The Voltammetric Behaviour Of Tio2 Memristors, John Cassidy, Daryl Fox, Tony Betts

Articles

Abstract A model is solved based on the Nernst Planck equation to calculate the diffusion and migration currents for a species in a thin layer (about 200 nm) confined between two electrodes. This is proposed to account for the current voltage behaviour of a memristor constructed in a similar fashion. At the working electrode, an electroactive species is oxidised and at the counter electrode, the same species is reduced. Upon application of a simple voltammetric waveform, the migration current exhibits a resistance profile at slow scan rates and hysteresis at faster scan rates, indicative of memristor behavior.

Abstract

Unintentional injuries are a leading cause of death in childhood globally. Injuries lead to emotional trauma and financial burden for children, parents, and society. Here are the frequencies of unintentional injuries in children presented to the emergency and paediatric surgery clinics of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, from January to December 2012. Aretrospective chart review of children aged 0 day to 14 years presented with falls, burns, foreign body ingestion or inhalation, poisoning, fingers caught in doors, electrocution injuries and drowning, was conducted. Atotal of 165 children were included. Domestic injuries were frequently occurring injuries in our …
