Root Of Everything, Christina Mangiaracina May 2016

Root Of Everything, Christina Mangiaracina

be Still

This piece is entitled Root of Everything. A woman waters the soil like she nurtures her family and inspires our minds. She plants the seeds in our heads so we can explore and see paths blooming from the branch up north all the way to the branch down south. The female form is the nutrient of life.

The Bather, Paula Waziry May 2016

The Bather, Paula Waziry

be Still

What inspired me to work on the female form was the belief that our minds can create our reality. Most of my life I had suffered from morbid obesity - reaching at one point 288 lbs. Most likely my body weight reached higher numbers, but I refused to step on the scale after observing the dreaded 288! I was suffering from low self esteem, depression, severe low back pain, tendinitis, plantar fasciitis and several other "itis" when I realized that the most powerful tool that I had available was my brain. If I was going to turn my life around, …

The glaucomas are a group of diseases characterized by optic nerve damage that together represent a leading cause of blindness in the human population and in domestic animals. Here we report a mutation in LTBP2 that causes primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) in domestic cats. We identified a spontaneous form of PCG in cats and established a breeding colony segregating for PCG consistent with fully penetrant, autosomal recessive inheritance of the trait. Elevated intraocular pressure, globe enlargement and elongated ciliary processes were consistently observed in all affected cats by 8 weeks of age. Varying degrees of optic nerve damage resulted by …

Background

HPV infection causes cervical cancer, a major contributor to morbidity and mortality among low-income Mexican women. Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing is now a primary screening strategy in Mexico’s early cervical cancer detection program (ECDP). Research on Mexican women’s perceptions of HPV and testing is necessary for establishing culturally appropriate protocols and educational materials. Here, we explore perceptions about HPV and HPV-related risk factors among low-income Mexican ECDP participants.

Methods

We conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 ECDP participants from two primary care health clinics in Michoacán state, Mexico. Interviews addressed women’s understandings of and experiences with HPV and HPV …

Identification Of Xpa And Xpc Gene Mutations In Patients With Xeroderma Pigmentosum, Eman Abdelalim Sidky Rabie

Theses and Dissertations

The human body employs different DNA repair pathways to protect itself against cancers induced by DNA damage. The nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway comprises different synchronously working DNA repair proteins; two of which are XPA and XPC. Mutations of any of the genes encoding the NER proteins cause an autosomal recessive genetic disorder called Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP). XP patients present with characteristic dry atrophic freckle-like pigmentation of the skin, photosensitivity and photophobia. Some patients develop neurodegenerative symptoms early in life, including mental retardation. Patients have a 10,000-fold increased risk for UV-induced skin cancers, moreover, a higher risk for ocular, oral …

Mindfulness-Based Intervention For Perinatal Grief Education And Reduction Among Poor Women In Chhattisgarh, India: A Pilot Study, Lisa R. Roberts, Susanne B. Montgomery

Interdisciplinary Journal of Best Practices in Global Development

INTRODUCTION: Stillbirth is a significant public health problem in low to middle income countries and results in perinatal grief, often with negative psychosocial impact. In low-resource settings, such as Chhattisgarh, India, where needs are high, it is imperative to utilize low-cost, effective interventions. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is an empirically sound intervention that has been utilized for a broad range of physical and mental health problems, and is adaptable to specific populations. The main objective of this pilot study was to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of a shortened, culturally adapted mindfulness-based intervention to address the complex grief after stillbirth. …

National Institute Of Health Stroke Scale (Nihss) Inter-Rater Reliability And Confidence Among Nihss Certified Nurses: Implementation Of A Standardized Patient Simulation, Kelly J. Trieglaff May 2016

National Institute Of Health Stroke Scale (Nihss) Inter-Rater Reliability And Confidence Among Nihss Certified Nurses: Implementation Of A Standardized Patient Simulation, Kelly J. Trieglaff

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

The National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is the most common stroke assessment used by nurses. Nurses certified on the NIHSS do not consistently demonstrate inter-rater reliability nor are they confident when assessing stroke patients using the tool (Josephson, Hills, Johnston, 2006). This EBP project evaluated a standardized patient simulation for maintaining inter-rater reliability and confidence in NIHSS certified nurses. A literature review showed that a decrease in inter-rater reliability occurs within four weeks to three months of NIHSS certification. A single cohort of intensive care nurses and emergency department nurses used the NIHSS tool in a standardized patient …

Va-Ecmo In Cardiogenic Shock In Adults: Indications And Outcomes, Maya Guglin, Andrew Burchett

The VAD Journal

Background

Use of veno-arterial extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) has become increasingly common as a means of providing hemodynamic support for patients in cardiogenic shock. Data regarding the efficacy of VA-ECMO are provided almost exclusively by single-center, retrospective analyses. These retrospective analyses vary significantly with regards to documentation of the underlying pathophysiologic process resulting in cardiogenic shock.

Methods

Relevant published studies were identified by using a comprehensive search of English-language MEDLINE from 1966 to November 2015. Relevant references found cited in these studies were also analyzed. These studies were analyzed with regard to the indications the authors used for initiation of …

The Effects Of Sensorineural Hearing Impairment On Asynchronous Glimpsing Of Speech, Erol J. Ozmeral, Emily Buss, Joseph W. Hall Iii May 2016

The Effects Of Sensorineural Hearing Impairment On Asynchronous Glimpsing Of Speech, Erol J. Ozmeral, Emily Buss, Joseph W. Hall Iii

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Publications

In a previous study with normal-hearing listeners, we evaluated consonant identification masked by two or more spectrally contiguous bands of noise, with asynchronous square-wave modulation applied to neighboring bands. Speech recognition thresholds were 5.1–8.5 dB better when neighboring bands were presented to different ears (dichotic) than when all bands were presented to one ear (monaural), depending on the spectral width of the frequency bands. This dichotic advantage was interpreted as reflecting masking release from peripheral spread of masking from neighboring frequency bands. The present study evaluated this effect in listeners with sensorineural hearing loss, a population more susceptible to spread …

The Tnfα-Transgenic Rat: Hippocampal Synaptic Integrity, Cognition, Function, And Post-Ischemic Cell Loss, L. Creed Pettigrew, Richard J. Kryscio, Christopher M. Norris

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

The cytokine, tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), is a key regulator of neuroinflammation linked to numerous neurodegenerative conditions and diseases. The present study used transgenic rats that overexpress a murine TNFα gene, under the control of its own promoter, to investigate the impact of chronically elevated TNFα on hippocampal synaptic function. Neuronal viability and cognitive recovery in TNFα Tg rats were also determined following an ischemic insult arising from reversible middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Basal CA3-CA1 synaptic strength, recorded in acute brain slices, was not significantly different between eight-week-old TNFα Tg rats and non-Tg rats. In contrast, slices from …
