Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
Similar to other parts of the world, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Asia-Pacific Region has rapidly increased during the last few decades. The purposes of this pilot study were to determine the feasibility and the effects of a capacity building program for Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) to support self-management in a T2DM high risk population from a rural subdistrict in Northeast Thailand. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using surveys, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed and used to develop a 12-week capacity building program for VHVs. This program was then …

A Systematic Review Of Recruitment For Older Chinese Immigrants Into Clinical Trials, Wen-Wen Li, Yuaner Wu, Angela Chia-Chen Chen
Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
Purpose: To identify barriers and discuss strategies for recruitment of older Chinese immigrants into clinical research studies.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). PubMed, WEB of Science, CINAHL Plus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from 2001 to 2014. Empirical studies with Chinese immigrants aged 60 or older were identified and analyzed. Numerical analysis, such as calculation of response rates as indexes for recruitment outcomes, was conducted. Content analyses for recruitment barriers were abstracted.
Results: Thirteen studies of 4753 subjects were analyzed. Response rates ranged from …

OBJECTIVES: Investigate levels of retention at specified time periods along the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) cascade among mother-infant pairs as well as individual- and facility-level factors associated with retention.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of HIV-positive pregnant women and their infants attending five health centres from November 2010 to February 2012 in the Option B programme in Rwanda was established. Data were collected from several health registers and patient follow-up files. Additionally, informant interviews were conducted to ascertain health facility characteristics. Generalized estimating equation methods and modelling were utilized to estimate the number of mothers attending each antenatal care visit …

Comprehensive Public Health Delivery Systems: Using Foundational Capabilities To Achieve Health Impact And Equity, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
Achieving health equity requires building more comprehensive systems. Using data from a nationally representative cohort of U.S. communities, this session will explore the characteristics of Comprehensive Public Health Delivery Systems, the structures and processes needed to build such systems, and the health and economic benefits attributable to these systems.
Learning Objectives:
- Compare innovative ways to structure local health departments that maximize resources to enhance service delivery to the community.
- Discuss ways local health departments can build strategic alliances to implement successful collaborations that address health threats in the community.
