The Texas Heart Institute Journal
Periodontal disease has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether a correlation between periodontitis and chronic heart failure exists, as well as the nature of the underlying cause.
We enrolled 71 patients (mean age, 54 ± 13 yr; 56 men) who had stable chronic heart failure; all underwent complete cardiologic and dental evaluations. The periodontal screening index was used to quantify the degree of periodontal disease. We compared the findings to those in the general population with use of data from the 4th German Dental Health Survey.

Docetaxel (Dtxl) is currently the most common therapeutic option for prostate cancer (PC). However, adverse side effects and problems associated with chemo-resistance limit its therapeutic outcome in clinical settings. A targeted nanoparticle system to improve its delivery to and activity at the tumor site could be an attractive strategy for PC therapy. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop and determine the anti-cancer efficacy of a novel docetaxel loaded, prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) targeted superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) (J591-SPION-Dtxl) formulation for PC therapy. Our results showed the SPION-Dtxl formulation exhibits an optimal particle size and zeta …

Background
Psychiatric comorbidity is common among individuals with addictive disorders, with patients frequently suffering from anxiety disorders. While the genetic architecture of comorbid addictive and anxiety disorders remains unclear, elucidating the genes involved could provide important insights into the underlying etiology.
Methods
Here we examine a sample of 1284 Mexican-Americans from randomly selected extended pedigrees. Variance decomposition methods were used to examine the role of genetics in addiction phenotypes (lifetime history of alcohol dependence, drug dependence or chronic smoking) and various forms of clinically relevant anxiety. Genome-wide univariate and bivariate linkage scans were conducted to localize the chromosomal regions influencing …

Social Media And Perceptions Of Sexual Consent: Development And Psychometric Assessment Of Two Consent Measures, Kelley Rhoads
Social Media And Perceptions Of Sexual Consent: Development And Psychometric Assessment Of Two Consent Measures, Kelley Rhoads
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background. Preliminary qualitative research suggests some college students believe sexual consent can be communicated and interpreted in Social settings, such as parties or bars, and in contexts lacking face-to-face interaction like text messages and Social media content. Previous sexual consent researchers have described perceptions of consent that occur in Social settings as “outside the bedroom” consent. The belief that sexual consent can be interpreted from Social media content or that accepting an alcoholic beverage from someone at a bar is indicative of sexual consent is problematic and warrants further study. Current validated consent scales are limited and do not assess …

Fluorescence assay for GFP, optical absorbance for -lactamase activity, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were used to determine the amount of released protein, and visually examine the permeability enhancement of the cells, respectively. It was found that more -lactamase was present in the culture fluid after treatment with CNTs in a …
Fuzzy Logic In Health Care Settings: Moral Math For Value-Laden Choices, Sarah Voss
Fuzzy Logic In Health Care Settings: Moral Math For Value-Laden Choices, Sarah Voss
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This essay is intended as an example of “moral math”, i.e., ideas culled from mathematics which can positively impact social behavior. Specifically, it combines fuzzy logic with the ethical decisions which hospital staff and others are sometimes forced to make about health care (e.g., euthanasia issues following Hurricane Katrina). The assumption is that such decisions involve value-laden choices which lend themselves to “fuzzy” or “smart” protocols. The article discusses the history of fuzzy logic – what it is, how it is used, and how it might be even better-used as a support basis for making difficult choices …

Knowledge, Perceptions, And Attitudes Of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists Regarding The Use Of Desflurane With A Laryngeal Mask Airway, Rachel Davidson
Doctoral Projects
Abstract
The purpose of this capstone project is to evaluate the knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes of currently practicing, nationally board certified, registered nurse anesthetists regarding the use of desflurane with laryngeal mask airways. This research was conducted by developing a questionnaire and administering it to current nurse anesthetists. A literature review was completed to establish a theoretical framework, summarize and describe the current state of science, and determine the nature and design of this study. Although there are studies regarding desflurane use during the maintenance of general anesthesia using a laryngeal mask airway, there is no current perception-based research regarding …

Moderation Analysis Of Bowel Function Among Nutrients And Physical Function Or Depression, As Well As Whether Bowel Function Is Related To Cognition In Older Adults, Jessie Alwerdt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As we age, the risk for gut issues, such as smooth muscle tone, may be an underlying indirect or direct cause or risk factor for many age-related issues, such as frailty. Consequences of decreased motility and depleted epithelial barrier may result in nutrient deficiencies that may increase the risk for malnutrition (Brownie, 2006). Further, there is increasing evidence that there is a gut-brain-axis relationship that may influence cognition and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. While there are relationships established, the interconnections of these factors have yet to be fully understood.
This dissertation examined several relationships specific to …

Assessing Spanish-Speaking Children: A Comparison Of International Practices, Alexis Decker
Honors Projects
According to The National Center for Educational Statistics, 7.7% of all public K-12 students in the United States (US) speak Spanish in the home, representing 76.5% of all English- language learner (ELL) students (2013). Children exposed to two languages are referred to in the literature as ELLs, language minorities and/or bilingual children. As these children enter school, language disorders and differences may become apparent to the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). It is the responsibility of the SLP to determine whether a disorder exists or if what is being observed is simply an issue of language difference. As such, it is important …

Perceptions Of Reversible And Permanent Contraception In India, Neha Rani Bhardwaj
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Background: In 1951 India became the first country to launch a national family planning program focused on promoting reversible and permanent contraception including financial incentives for both method acceptors and providers. Despite governmental provision of the copper intrauterine device (IUD), oral contraceptive pills (OCP) and condoms at no cost, most Indian women choose permanent sterilization after completing childbearing. Whether the predominance of sterilization stemmed from Indian men and women’s desire for permanent contraception, from deficient knowledge and access to reversible methods, from public health messages and established norms, or from coercion in the form of incentives is unknown. Objectives: The …

Rhabdomyolysis- Diagnosis And Treatment, Ngonidzashe Chifamba
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Rhabdomyolysis is the dissolution of skeletal muscle caused by injury to skeletal muscle. It is a direct result of leakage of toxic cellular content into the blood stream. The most common cause of rhabdomyolysis is drug use, trauma, immobility, medicines and intense muscular exercise. The classic triad of rhabdomyolysis symptoms comprises the following symptoms; myalgias, generalized weakness and darkened urine. Pathophysiology of rhabdomyolysis involves an increase in free ionized calcium and sodium which draws water into the cell and disrupts the integrity of the intracellular milieu. Rhabdomyolysis can be life-threatening and disabling, having a clinician who knows how the syndrome …

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Among sexually active men and women, the human papilloma virus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. With more than 200 different genotypes of HPV known, there are more than 500,000 cases each year in the United States alone (Lowy, 2016). The virus is associated with nearly all cervical cancers, anal cancers, vaginal cancers, penile cancers, and head and neck cancers (Jorge & Wright, 2016). In women, the virus is capable of causing slow cellular changes on the cervix, and this dysplasia is graded based on severity (Jorge & Wright, 2016).
