Music Therapy For The Body And Soul, Rhonda Benzley, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In effort to provide superior nursing practice, current research is examining the efficacy of a variety of novel nursing interventions. One such technique is Music Therapy, defined by Gillam as, “The controlled use of music in treatment, rehabilitation, education, and training of children and adults with a physical, mental or emotional disorder.”7 Numerous studies have shown the ability of music intervention to promote a sense of well being among various patient populations by decreasing anxiety, agitation and pain, promoting relaxation and stress reduction. These studies also show that music has been specifically beneficial in increasing orientation, memory and sociability among …

BACKGROUND: For the anucleate platelet it has been unclear how well platelet transcriptomes correlate among different donors or across different RNA profiling platforms, and what the transcriptomes' relationship is with the platelet proteome. We profiled the platelet transcriptome of 10 healthy young males (5 white and 5 black) with no notable clinical history using RNA sequencing and by Affymetrix microarray.
RESULTS: We found that the abundance of platelet mRNA transcripts was highly correlated across the 10 individuals, independently of race and of the employed technology. Our RNA-seq data showed that these high inter-individual correlations extend beyond mRNAs to several categories …

The NovoTTF-100A device emits frequency-tuned alternating electric fields that interfere with tumor cell mitosis. In phase III trial for recurrent glioblastomas, NovoTTF-100A was shown to have equivalent efficacy and less toxicity when compared to Best Physician's Choice (BPC) chemotherapy. We analyzed the characteristics of responders and nonresponders in both cohorts to determine the characteristics of response and potential predictive factors. Tumor response and progression were determined by Macdonald criteria. Time to response, response duration, progression-free survival (PFS) ± Simon-Makuch correction, overall survival (OS), prognostic factors, and relative hazard rates were compared between responders and nonresponders. Median response duration was 7.3 …

Interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF8) is known to affect the innate immune response, for example, by regulating the differentiation and function of immune cells. However, whether IRF8 can influence cardiac hypertrophy is unknown. Here we show that IRF8 levels are decreased in human dilated/hypertrophic cardiomyopathic hearts and in murine hypertrophic hearts. Mice overexpressing Irf8 specifically in the heart are resistant to aortic banding (AB)-induced cardiac hypertrophy, whereas mice lacking IRF8 either globally or specifically in cardiomyocytes develop an aggravated phenotype induced by pressure overload. Mechanistically, we show that IRF8 directly interacts with NFATc1 to prevent NFATc1 translocation and thus inhibits …

Resource To Develop Medical Students Into Peer Mentors, Sean Meredith, Larrie Greenberg, Benjamin Blatt
E-Learning Modules
The primary goal of the Peer Mentoring Guide is to develop fourth year medical students (MS-4s) into mentors for first year medical students (MS-1s). The purpose of this resource is to provide others who want to develop a peer mentoring program as part of an advanced students-as-teachers curriculum.
The George Washington University was one of the first schools to have a program to prepare medical students for their teaching role as residents and practicing physicians, which was called TALKS (Teaching and Learning Knowledge and Skills). We recently recognized that some participants were interested in going beyond the boundaries of the …

Health Management and Policy Presentations
Research on the organization, financing, and delivery of public health services has accelerated in the U.S. in recent years. This applied scholarship has been fueled in part by the changes and natural experiments created by global economic recession and by comprehensive federal and state health reforms. Co-occuring changes in public health organization and financing have occurred in Canada and more specifically in British Columbia, where valuable scholarship on public health delivery is also underway. This presentation reviews the progress and current directions of PHSSR scholarship in the U.S., and identifies opportunities and implications for British Columbia.

Ube3a Role In Synaptic Plasticity And Neurodevelopmental Disorders. The Lessons From Angelman Syndrome., Irina Filonova
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 1:12000 newborns. It is characterized by mental retardation, delayed major motor and cognitive milestones, seizures, absence of speech and excessive laughter. The majority of AS cases arise from deletions or mutations of UBE3A gene located on the chromosome 15q11-13. UBE3A codes for E3-ubiquitin ligase that target specific proteins for degradation. To date, a wide variety of Ube3a substrates has been identified. The accumulation of Ube3a-dependent proteins and their effect on the multitude of signal transduction pathways are` considered the main cause of the AS pathology. While the majority of research …

Opioid abuse is a worldwide problem and there are not enough care providers or treatment programs available to treat the opioid abuse epidemic. Many primary-care nurse practitioners care for patients who are dependant and/or abuse opioids. Under current legislation, nurse practitioners are not allowed to prescribe the schedule III medications necessary to treat them, even though they have been made available to primary-care physicians with some additional training. This paper discusses the effectiveness of opioid substitution therapy in a primary care setting, the patient population best suited for this therapy, patient satisfaction with primary care service, and the barriers preventing …

Cognitive processes associated with prefrontal cortex and hippocampus decline with age and are vulnerable to disruption by stress. The stress/stress hormone/allostatic load hypotheses of brain aging posit that brain aging, at least in part, is the manifestation of life-long stress exposure. In addition, as humans age, there is a profound increase in the incidence of new onset stressors, many of which are psychosocial (e.g., loss of job, death of spouse, social isolation), and aged humans are well-understood to be more vulnerable to the negative consequences of such new-onset chronic psychosocial stress events. However, the mechanistic underpinnings of this age-related shift …
Cholera Transmission Dynamic Models For Public Health Practitioners, Isaac Chun-Hai Fung
Cholera Transmission Dynamic Models For Public Health Practitioners, Isaac Chun-Hai Fung
Epidemiology: Faculty Publications (2002-2018)
Great progress has been made in mathematical models of cholera transmission dynamics in recent years. However, little impact, if any, has been made by models upon public health decision-making and day-to-day routine of epidemiologists. This paper provides a brief introduction to the basics of ordinary differential equation models of cholera transmission dynamics. We discuss a basic model adapted from Codeço (2001), and how it can be modified to incorporate different hypotheses, including the importance of asymptomatic or inapparent infections, and hyperinfectious V. choleraeand human-to-human transmission. We highlight three important challenges of cholera models: (1) model misspecification and parameter uncertainty, …

INTRODUCTION: Congenital muscular dystrophies (CMD) are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of neuromuscular disorders characterized by muscle weakness within the first two years of life. Collagen VI-related muscle disorders have recently emerged as one of the most common types of CMD. COL6 CMD is caused by deficiency and/or dysfunction of extracellular matrix (ECM) protein collagen VI. Currently, there is no specific treatment for this disabling and life-threatening disease. The primary cellular targets for collagen VI CMD therapy are fibroblasts in muscle, tendon and skin, as opposed to muscle cells for other types of muscular dystrophies. However, recent advances in …

Human obesity has been linked to genetic factors and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) SNPs have been associated with up to 6% frequency in morbidly obese children and adults. A potential therapy for individuals possessing such genetic modifications is the identification of molecules that can restore proper receptor signaling and function. These compounds could serve as personalized medications improving quality of life issues as well as alleviating diseases symptoms associated with obesity including type 2 diabetes. Several hMC4 SNP receptors have been pharmacologically characterized in vitro to have a decreased, or a lack of response, to endogenous agonists …

So, You Think You Have Sleep Deprivation?, Stacy J. Parry, Dr. Joan H. Baldwin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Sleep plays an important role in maintaining health. Sleep affects two types of physiologic functions; the nervous system itself and other structures of the body. Sleep deprivation is often associated with continuous malfunction of the mind and at other times can cause abnormal behavioral activities of the nervous system. Sleep restores the natural balance among the neuronal centers (1). “Everyone has a sleep-wake cycle that corresponds to her or his optimum degree of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Studies show that adequate sleep enhances attentiveness, concentration, mood, and motivation.” (2)

BACKGROUND: Palliative shunts in congenital heart disease patients are vulnerable to thrombotic occlusion. High mechanical index (MI) impulses from a modified diagnostic ultrasound (US) transducer during a systemic microbubble (MB) infusion have been used to dissolve intravascular thrombi without anticoagulation, and we sought to determine whether this technique could be used prophylactically to reduce thrombus burden and prevent occlusion of surgically placed extracardiac shunts.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Heparin-bonded ePTFE tubular vascular shunts of 4 mm×2.5 cm (Propaten; W.L Gore) were surgically placed in 18 pigs: a right-sided side-to-side arteriovenous (AV, carotid-jugular) shunt, and a left-sided arterio-arterial (AA, carotid-carotid) interposition shunt …

A Metal Fabrication And Finishing Foreman Dies After 25 Foot Fall At A Commercial Building Site, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Falls
On a fall Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 pm, a 53-year-old male fabrication and finishing foreman was installing sheets of insulation prior to decking on a commercial building. The foreman was standing at the edge of the decking on roof beams, arguing with an excavation contractor about the movement of his loader to complete grading work. Witnesses say the foreman was distracted when he told the other workers to spread the “itchy” (meaning rolls of fiberglass insulation). When the foreman took a step forward as he usually did, he fell off the edge and died of head and neck injuries.

Human error can occur in any profession. Medical errors are most commonly occurring errors in a health care system, which are responsible to delay patient’s recovery and produce harm to patient. However, being as a health care professional, it is the requirement of professional code of ethics to do well and not to harm our patients. Historically, many of these errors were not disclosed to patients but the trend is emerging for more open disclosure of medical errors to patients and their families. The aim of this paper is to explain medical error and analyze this concept in the light …
