Meshless Mechanics And Point-Based Visualization Methods For Surgical Simulations, Rifat Aras Jul 2014

Meshless Mechanics And Point-Based Visualization Methods For Surgical Simulations, Rifat Aras

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computer-based modeling and simulation practices have become an integral part of the medical education field. For surgical simulation applications, realistic constitutive modeling of soft tissue is considered to be one of the most challenging aspects of the problem, because biomechanical soft-tissue models need to reflect the correct elastic response, have to be efficient in order to run at interactive simulation rates, and be able to support operations such as cuts and sutures.

Mesh-based solutions, where the connections between the individual degrees of freedom (DoF) are defined explicitly, have been the traditional choice to approach these problems. However, when the problem …

Modeling Solutions For Prevention Of Medicare Insolvency For The Baby Boomer Generation (Born 1946 - 1964), Gregory Thomas Scott

Health Services Research Dissertations

Medicare, a United States social insurance program operated by the United States federal government, began operating in a deficit in the year 2010. More funding was expended than revenue received for medical care, creating significant shortfalls for the Medicare Trust Fund. This study examined possible initiatives to describe Medicare funding related to issues as financial shortfalls utilizing mathematical modeling and simulation. The Park Conceptual Model is a framework created to identify internal and external changes that influence bankruptcies related to municipalities, and this Model served as the theoretical basis for this study.

The following study addressed insolvency as negative cash …

Effects Of Dfo-Induced Hypoxia On Key Signaling Mediators, Jennifer Candelora Jul 2014

Effects Of Dfo-Induced Hypoxia On Key Signaling Mediators, Jennifer Candelora

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

While diseases such as cancer and diabetes, or surgery and traumatic injury can cause hypoxia through a decrease in blood circulation to bodily regions or decrease cardiac output they can also associate with hypoxia-induced pain. Clinically, opioids, such as morphine, are used to modulate pain. The mu-opioid receptors (MORs) are one of three main types of opioid receptors and are key mediators in morphine-induced analgesia. Therefore, in this study, the effect of hypoxia on MOR gene expression was examined using human neuronal cells treated with DFO to create a hypoxic-mimic condition. We found that MOR expression was shown to decrease …

Approximately 20% of Medicare beneficiaries are readmitted within 30 days of discharge from the hospital, costing $17.4 billion per year.1 A number of studies have examined the factors associated with risk of hospital readmissions.1 To the best of the knowledge of the authors of the current study, no studies have examined the characteristics of individuals who are on their second hospital stay. Identification of these characteristics is important for quality care, better interventions, and economic reasons.2 This study was performed to examine the characteristics and vulnerabilities of individuals aged 65 and older who had a second hospital stay within 30 …

A Grounded Theory Of Suicidality In Children Ten And Younger, Katherine Angela Heimsch Jul 2014

A Grounded Theory Of Suicidality In Children Ten And Younger, Katherine Angela Heimsch

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

Once every two days in the United States, a child aged 5 to 14 years old dies by suicide (World Health Organization, 2010). When viewed on a spectrum that includes suicidal ideation, verbalizations, behaviors, and attempts, the problem of youth suicidality is actually far greater than the numbers of completed suicides suggest (Cheng, Tao, Riley, Kann, Ye, Tian...Hu, 2009). This study examined suicidality in children ages 10 and younger, and included the characteristics of suicidal children, factors that influence childhood suicidality, and treatment implications. The researcher conducted 12 semi-structured qualitative interviews with experienced treatment providers and performed a content analysis …

A Simple High Performance Liquid Chromatography Method For Determination Of Rebamipide In Rat Urine, Dustin L. Cooper, Sam Harirforoosh

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Rebamipide is a mucoprotective agent commonly used to prevent nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drug-induced gastrointenstinal side effects [1]. Human plasma and urine analysis of rebamipide utilizing high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) have been reported [2]. Recently, we reported on the plasma levels of rebamipide in presense or absence of celecoxib or diclofenac in rats [3] using a modified HPLC method of detection developed by Jeoung et al. [4]. To tailor the method towards use in urinary rebamipide extraction and analysis, the following modifications were made:

  • To compensate for high concentrations of rebamipide found in urine, a new rebamipide stock solution was prepared …

Sex Hormones Regulate Tenofovir-Diphosphate In Female Reproductive Tract Cells In Culture, Zheng Shen, John V. Fahey, Jack E. Bodwell, Marta Rodriguez-Garcia, Angela D.M Kashuba, Charles R. Wira Jun 2014

Sex Hormones Regulate Tenofovir-Diphosphate In Female Reproductive Tract Cells In Culture, Zheng Shen, John V. Fahey, Jack E. Bodwell, Marta Rodriguez-Garcia, Angela D.M Kashuba, Charles R. Wira

Dartmouth Scholarship

The conflicting results of recent pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) trials utilizing tenofovir (TFV) to prevent HIV infection in women led us to evaluate the accumulation of intracellular TFV-diphosphate (TFV-DP) in cells from the female reproductive tract (FRT) and whether sex hormones influence the presence of TFV-DP in these cells. Following incubation with TFV, isolated epithelial cells, fibroblasts, CD4+ T cells and CD14+ cells from the FRT as well as blood CD4+ T cells and monocyte-derived macrophages convert TFV to TFV-DP. Unexpectedly, we found that TFV-DP concentrations (fmol/million cells) vary significantly with the cell type analyzed and the site …

What Parents Really Think About Their Feeding Practices And Behaviors: Lessons Learned From The Development Of A Parental Feeding Assessment Tool, Stephanie L. Sitnick, Lenna L. Ontai, Marilyn Townsend Jun 2014

What Parents Really Think About Their Feeding Practices And Behaviors: Lessons Learned From The Development Of A Parental Feeding Assessment Tool, Stephanie L. Sitnick, Lenna L. Ontai, Marilyn Townsend

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Interest in the role that parenting assumes in child obesity has increased the need for valid and reliable screening tools that are specific for populations targeted by programming efforts. While low-income families comprise a large audience for Cooperative Extension obesity prevention programs, valid and reliable selfadministered parenting assessments for this population are lacking. Development of such tools requires understanding low-income parents’ interpretations of questions related to their parenting. The current paper reports on interviews conducted with low-income parents (N = 44) of 3- to 5-year-old children during the development of a tool to assess parenting in the context of feeding. …

E-Cigarettes, Vaping, And Youth, Lawrence O. Gostin, Aliza Y. Glasner Jun 2014

E-Cigarettes, Vaping, And Youth, Lawrence O. Gostin, Aliza Y. Glasner

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

E-cigarettes, a relatively new product, storming the tobacco industry are causing a massive stir among public health advocates. While e-cigarettes have the potential to serve as an effective harm reduction tool for existing smokers, they also may present an equally tempting pathway to first time smoking, particularly among youth. Many fear that e-cigarettes will revive the popular smoking culture that has taken decades to dismantle.

In April 2014, the FDA issued proposed rules to “deem” or extend its authority over tobacco products to regulate electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, nicotine gels, waterpipe (hookah) tobacco, and orally ingested dissolvable tobacco products. …

The Impact Of Parentification On Depression Moderated By Self-Care: A Multiple Group Analysis By Gender For South Korea And The U.S., Sunnie Giles Jun 2014

The Impact Of Parentification On Depression Moderated By Self-Care: A Multiple Group Analysis By Gender For South Korea And The U.S., Sunnie Giles

Theses and Dissertations

Parentification, the process of role reversal between parent and child, has long-term deleterious consequences. Using 500 men and 501 women, ranging from 18 years to 55 years old, residing in Korea and the U.S., this study examined the relationship of parentification experienced during childhood and depression in adulthood. The moderating impact of gender and self-care was examined in both the Korean and U.S. samples. Multiple-group analysis showed that the relationship between parentification and depression was statistically significant in all groups (U.S., Korean, male, and female), and self-care was negatively linked to depression. However, self-care did not moderate the relationship between …

Stable Conflict Resolution Styles And Commitment: Their Roles In Marital Relationship Self-Regulation, Rebecca Suzanne Boyd Jun 2014

Stable Conflict Resolution Styles And Commitment: Their Roles In Marital Relationship Self-Regulation, Rebecca Suzanne Boyd

Theses and Dissertations

Gottman's (1994a) three stable conflict resolution styles (CRSs), validating, volatile, and avoidant, are different on several dimensions, yet all are predictors of good marital satisfaction. Despite the CRSs equality in marital satisfaction and stability research, teaching couples a validating style is often explicitly more preferential in therapeutic settings. Relationship self-regulation (RSR), described as relationship “work”, is also a strong predictor of relationship satisfaction. Identifying the CRS environment in a relationship that most contributes to the practice of RSR can inform clinical and couple relationship education interventions. Based on its success in improving marital satisfaction in therapeutic settings, a validating CRS …

Dartmouth Scholarship

In omic research, such as genome wide association studies, researchers seek to repeat their results in other datasets to reduce false positive findings and thus provide evidence for the existence of true associations. Unfortunately this standard validation approach cannot completely eliminate false positive conclusions, and it can also mask many true associations that might otherwise advance our understanding of pathology. These issues beg the question: How can we increase the amount of knowledge gained from high throughput genetic data? To address this challenge, we present an approach that complements standard statistical validation methods by drawing attention to both potential false …

Preliminary Test Of A Real-Time, Interactive Silent Speech Interface Based On Electromagnetic Articulograph, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green Jun 2014

Preliminary Test Of A Real-Time, Interactive Silent Speech Interface Based On Electromagnetic Articulograph, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

A silent speech interface (SSI) maps articulatory movement data to speech output. Although still in experimental stages, silent speech interfaces hold significant potential for facilitating oral communication in persons after laryngectomy or with other severe voice impairments. Despite the recent efforts on silent speech recognition algorithm development using offline data analysis, online test of SSIs have rarely been conducted. In this paper, we present a preliminary, online test of a real-time, interactive SSI based on electromagnetic motion tracking. The SSI played back synthesized speech sounds in response to the user’s tongue and lip movements. Three English talkers participated in this …

Individual And Partner Characteristics Associated With Genital Herpes Disclosure And The Relationship Between Disclosure Outcomes, Rejection, And Future Intentions To Disclose, Jaime L. Myers Jun 2014

Individual And Partner Characteristics Associated With Genital Herpes Disclosure And The Relationship Between Disclosure Outcomes, Rejection, And Future Intentions To Disclose, Jaime L. Myers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: Genital herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the United States. As genital herpes is incurable and contagious, individuals with genital herpes face the decision to disclose their status to potential sexual partners with each new relationship formed. Such disclosure places individuals with genital herpes in a position to face rejection, which is commonly reported as one of the most concerning aspects of having genital herpes. The present study seeks to further understand the nature of genital herpes disclosure by addressing two core aims: 1) to understand determinants of and reasons for disclosure and non-disclosure …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

This study examines the association between health literacy and adherence to low-salt diet practices among individuals with hypertension. Health literacy is the ability of individuals to understand and utilize health information. We surveyed 238 patients with hypertension from a primary care clinic in Charlotte, NC. We assessed health literacy and self-reported low-salt diet. Logistic regression was used to model the relationship between health literacy and low-salt diet adherence. Respondents were primarily female (67.3%) and black (80%). Black Americans were less likely to have adequate health literacy as compared to white Americans (21.8% vs. 55.8%). The study found no association between …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Creating health equity and eliminating health disparities are considered national priorities for improving the health of Americans (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). Health disparities are a primary public health concern, yet are complex phenomena and challenging to research (Harper & Lynch, 2005). The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), under the National Institute of Health (NIH), is committed to finding solutions to achieve this goal through the creation of interdisciplinary Centers of Excellence. In 2009, the University of South Florida (USF) and Moffitt Cancer Center (Moffitt) received a NIMHD Exploratory Center of Excellence award …
