Endovascular Treatment Of Intracranial Aneurysms Using Balloon Remodeling Technique, Wasey Jilani, Tanveer Ul Haq Jul 2014

Endovascular Treatment Of Intracranial Aneurysms Using Balloon Remodeling Technique, Wasey Jilani, Tanveer Ul Haq

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Endovascular treatment with coils is widely used in the management of intracranial aneurysms. However, this type of treatment can be technically challenging for anatomic reasons, particularly when the neck of the aneurysm is wide or when the dome-to-neck ratio is not favorable. Previous studies described the remodeling technique for extending the indications and feasibility of the endovascular treatment to wide-neck intracranial aneurysms. In remodeling technique, a non-detachable balloon is temporarily inflated in front of the neck of the aneurysm during each coil placement. At the end of the procedure, the remodeling balloon is removed and no device is left in …

Autism- Towards Comprehensive Assessment And Management, Ayesha Mian Jul 2014

Autism- Towards Comprehensive Assessment And Management, Ayesha Mian

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Autism is a pervasive, neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by stereotyped movements and impairment in social skills and communication patterns. Prevalence patterns show an increasing burden of about 1 in 150 children affected by the disorder. Most affected individuals have symptoms that interfere greatly with quality of life. Although a burgeoning concern, research on the prevalence, etiological factors and presentation patterns is limited in LAMI countries, leading to a minimal understanding of the disorder at individual, professional and societal level. There is an urgent need to enhance awareness and education to decrease stigma that maybe associated with autism.

Mechanisms Responsible For Decreased Rat Pulmonary Arterial H2o2 Levels In A Model Of Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Danielle Rachel Plomaritas Jul 2014

Mechanisms Responsible For Decreased Rat Pulmonary Arterial H2o2 Levels In A Model Of Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Danielle Rachel Plomaritas

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Our laboratory has demonstrated an important role for acid-sensing ion channel 1 (ASIC1) in pulmonary hypertension through augmented Ca2+ influx in pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMC) following chronic hypoxia (CH). However, this enhanced calcium (Ca2+) influx is not dependent on an increase in ASIC1 protein expression. This suggests other regulatory mechanisms influencing ASIC1 activity are altered following CH. ASIC1 is a redox sensitive ion channel and recent studies from our laboratory have shown that the oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) inhibits ASIC1-dependent Ca2+ influx in PASMC. Reactive oxygen species are known to be altered in pulmonary hypertension, however the direction …

We describe preparation and use of the quaternary ammonium-based α-iodoacetamide QDE and its isotopologue *QDE as reagents for chemoselective derivatization of cellular thiols. Direct addition of the reagents to live cells followed by adduct extraction into n-butanol and analysis by FT-ICR-MS provided a registry of matched isotope peaks from which molecular formulae of thiol metabolites were derived. Acidification to pH 4 during cell lysis and adduct formation further improves the chemoselectivity for thiol derivatization. Examination of A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cells using this approach revealed cysteine, cysteinylglycine, glutathione, and homocysteine as principal thiol metabolites as well as the sulfinic acid …

A Model Of Children's Acquisition Of Grammatical Word Categories Using An Adaptation And Selection Algorithm, Teresa Young

Theses and Dissertations

Most children who follow a typical developmental timeline learn the grammatical categories of words in their native language by the time they enter school. Researchers have worked to provide a number of explicit, testable models or algorithms in an attempt to model this language development. These models or algorithms have met with some varying success in terms of determining grammatical word categories from the transcripts of adult input to children. A new model of grammatical category acquisition involving an application of evolutionary computing algorithms may provide further understanding in this area. This model implements aspects of evolutionary biology, such as …

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Budding of filoviruses, arenaviruses, and rhabdoviruses is facilitated by subversion of host proteins, such as Nedd4 E3 ubiquitin ligase, by viral PPxY late (L) budding domains expressed within the matrix proteins of these RNA viruses. As L domains are important for budding and are highly conserved in a wide array of RNA viruses, they represent potential broad-spectrum targets for the development of antiviral drugs. To identify potential competitive blockers, we used the known Nedd4 WW domain-PPxY interaction interface as the basis of an in silico screen. Using PPxY-dependent budding of Marburg (MARV) VP40 virus-like particles (VLPs) as our model system, …

Systemic Hematogenous Maintenance Of Memory Inflation By Mcmv Infection., Corinne J Smith, Holly Turula, Christopher M. Snyder

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Several low-grade persistent viral infections induce and sustain very large numbers of virus-specific effector T cells. This was first described as a response to cytomegalovirus (CMV), a herpesvirus that establishes a life-long persistent/latent infection, and sustains the largest known effector T cell populations in healthy people. These T cells remain functional and traffic systemically, which has led to the recent exploration of CMV as a persistent vaccine vector. However, the maintenance of this remarkable response is not understood. Current models propose that reservoirs of viral antigen and/or latently infected cells in lymph nodes stimulate T cell proliferation and effector differentiation, …
