Effective nanopulse generators have become critical in recent decades concerning the study of subcellular affects in response to nanosecond pulsed electric fields. It has been observed that nanosecond duration electric pulses can target intracellular organelles, ultimately leading to cell apoptosis, suggesting the possibility of a new, minimally invasive, low risk cancer therapy methodology. The standard topology for developing a medical nanopulser is the Blumlein “transmission line” approach. This approach relies on the nearly infinitesimal, yet finite amount of time required for an electromagnetic field to propagate down a short transmission line. Background and Purpose: Robot-assisted gait devices have become increasingly popular as they have been shown to increase the likeliness of independent ambulation in patients who have had a stroke, while also decreasing the physical burden on the physical therapist. However, there has been minimal research investigating the impact of these devices on activities of daily living (ADL) function. I review the current trend of international volunteer travel with a focus on advantages and disadvantages of short-term (1-2 week) medical volunteer trips and how cross-cultural communication can influence the effectiveness of volunteers. Advantages include making health care available to populations who normally do not have access to care. Disadvantages to trips include a lack of follow-up care and community dependence on outside aid. To increase the effectiveness of these trips, it is recommended that volunteers coordinate with full-time health care workers in target communities and utilize pre-departure training.

• Geriatric patients (> 65 years of age) have a 3-5% incremental increase in annual occurrence of trauma making it a top five leading cause of death in this population.

• The mortality rate ranges from 15-30%, which is 4-5 times higher than younger patients.

• In 2011, data from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) demonstrated nearly 32% of injured patients statewide and nearly 50% of the trauma patients at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) were > 65 years.

• Most geriatric patients have comorbidities that are treated with many medications, which may predispose them for falls.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory neurological disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS), characterized by demyelination and activation of microglia. Mitochondrial mutations and dysfunctions in microglial cells are thought to contribute to the detrimental effects of neuroinflammation seen in MS. The Somatic Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) technology offers a more practical mode of therapy in MS, this method would attempt to dilute and/or progressively replace the mutated and activated microglia with cloned Olfactory Ensheathing Cells (OEC) with remyelinating and scavenging properties which would attempt to limit the progression of MS. Culturally-Appropriate, Family- And Community-Based Physical Activity And Healthy Eating Intervention For African-American Middle School-Aged Girls: A Feasibility Pilot, Daheia J. Barr-Anderson, Alexis W. Adams-Wynn, Sofiya Alhassan, Melicia C. Whitt-Glover

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

This study tested the feasibility and acceptability of a physical activity, healthy eating, and social support intervention. Twelve African-American daughter-mother dyads (BMI percentile: daughters=92.6±12.79; BMI: mothers=38.8±5.81 kg/m2) met weekly during the 8-week Intensive Phase; throughout the 6-month Maintenance Phase, participants received monthly newsletters for 3 months and attended monthly face-to-face sessions for 3 months. Daughters and mothers reported positive feedback about intervention activities and educational curriculum. Post-intervention daughter survey results revealed positive trends towards increasing PA; increasing breakfast, water, and fruit/vegetable intake; and reducing sugar sweetened drink consumption. Mothers reported similar behavioral changes. This unique intervention was highly enjoyed by …

Ten percent of the National Health Service annual budget goes to treat complications from diabetes (Lancet, 2010). The American Diabetes Association® (ADA, 2013) estimated that diabetics in the United States incur $176 billion annually in direct medical costs for treatment with hospitalization being the main component of the expenditures. California has the largest population of diabetics and the highest annual cost at $27.6 billion (ADA, 2013). The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP, 2008) found that the average cost of hospitalization in 2008 for a patient with diabetes was $10,937 in contrast to $8,746 for a patient without diabetes. Despite recurrent hospitalizations for heart failure exacerbations, the underlying cause can be missed. Senile amyloidosis is a disease prevalent in the elderly African American population. Senile amyloidosis is underdiagnosed as a cause of heart failure because of its occurrence with more common comorbidities, such as long-standing systemic hypertension. It is important to maintain a high index of suspicion for senile amyloidosis in patients such as this case, who presented with multiple exacerbations of heart failure combined with characteristic electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings.

Previous research has provided evidence that self-esteem decreases during an upward social comparison. The current study explored the possibility of a personality dimension on this phenomenon. The objective of the experiment was to test if there was an interaction between the scenario of social comparison and competitiveness, and how these factors influenced levels of self-esteem. 58 participants played a game in which they could choose if they wanted to compete or cooperate, and then they took a self-esteem survey to measure their reaction to the success, mediocrity, or failure of a classmate.
