Muscle function is determined by structure and morphology at the architectural level. In response to resistance training, older adults have demonstrated that the neuromuscular system has a substantial adaptability, which may compensate for muscle size and quality and lead to improved functional capacities and higher quality of life. Age-related deficits in muscle mass, strength, and function place an increased burden of work on existing skeletal muscle and may lead to early onset of neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) during activities of daily living. In the fall of 2010 the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) was awarded funding from the Federal Office of Adolescent Health to implement an evidence based teen pregnancy prevention curriculum. They have partnered with the Department of Juvenile Justice Services, the Clark County Department of Family Services, and the City of Las Vegas to offer this curriculum to the youth in juvenile detention, probation, community centers, and life skills classes for youth aging out of the foster care system. "This qualitative design study collected Likert style survey data to describe feelings, perceptions, and attitudes of dental hygienists about their knowledge about oral HPV and its associated risks for OPC. The research quantitatively analyzed the dental hygienists responses from the survey to determine if relationships exist based upon dental hygienists' demographics and knowledge, comfort, and likelihood to discuss oral HPV and HPV vaccine options with patients. The survey found that 81% of surveyed dental hygienists perform an intraoral exam on every patient they care for (n =341, 80.61%). The respondents also indicated that 49.88% (n=212) of dental hygiene patients complete …

Carotid artery diseases are diagnosed more frequently in practice due to increased mean life expectancy of the general population and the availability of imaging methods. Strong evidence coming from long term, randomized, large studies is required to support the idea that a carotid artery stent (CAS) may be an alternative to a carotid endarterectomy (CEA), which has been performed for long years with proven efficacy. Generally, no intervention (CEA or CAS) is performed in the stenosis of the external carotid artery (ECA) in the literature. In our case, we performed ipsilateral ECA and internal carotid artery stenting simultaneously.

To evaluate the amount of intestinal parasite infections over a 10-year period in the Gaza Strip. Materials and methods: Data from the Epidemiology Department, Ministry of Health were collected and analyzed statistically. The prevalence of intestinal parasites was monitored and studied for the period 1998-2007. Results: The present study shows results including the records of 471,688 patients (all ages) who had every provided 1 stool specimen to the laboratories of primary health care centers in one of the 5 governorates of the Gaza Strip. To investigate the psychiatric characteristics of acne vulgaris and the effects of the disease on quality of life. Materials and methods: We included 70 acne patients and 50 healthy controls. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, Quality of Life Scale Short Form, and Acne Quality of Life Questionnaire were applied. Esophageal perforations are rare but highly fatal pathologies. This study aims to discuss the treatment methods for esophageal perforations. Materials and methods: Twenty-two patients who were diagnosed with esophageal perforation in the Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine’s thoracic surgery clinics between 2000 and 2011 were retrospectively evaluated. Results: The cause of perforation was foreign body in 17 patients, dilatation with bougie in 2, balloon dilatation in 2, and spontaneous rupture in 1. To detect the prevalence and type distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) in different cytological diagnostic categories. Materials and methods: Between 2007 and 2010, a total of 1014 liquid-based thin preparations of cervical smears were selected and classified according to cytology results. HPV DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was also performed using these samples. HPV DNA-positive samples were genotyped by DNA sequencing. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 263 Turkish women chosen using an improbable randomized sampling method. A questionnaire, the Menopause Symptom Rating Scale (MSRS), and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) were used to collect data. To analyze the consequences of major pulmonary resections on right ventricle (RV) function by using the tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) technique. Materials and methods: Twenty patients (16 males and 4 females) who received pulmonary resection for primary non-small cell lung cancer underwent echocardiographic examinations before surgery on the 2nd and 7th postoperative days. To investigate serum HLA-G levels and its correlation with oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters in breast cancer patients. Materials and methods: The patient group consisted of 25 individuals with breast cancer who were operated on in the General Surgery Department of Gazi University’s Faculty of Medicine. Thirty-one individuals who had no history of any kind of cancer, allergic diseases, diabetes, or rheumatic and immunological disease constituted the control group. Results: Results showed that malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), and HLA-G levels in the patient group were statistically and significantly high compared to the control group (P < 0.001). While vitamin C levels were significantly lower in the patient group (P < 0.05), an insignificant difference in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and total sulfhydryl group (R-SH) levels in both groups was observed (P > 0.05). The JAK2 V617F mutation has been described as a frequent genetic event among a majority of patients with polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and myelofibrosis. In this research, we evaluated the prevalence of the JAK2 mutation and its clinical and laboratory correlation in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms. Materials and methods: A total of 615 patients with suspected myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) were analyzed for the JAK2 V617F mutation. After DNA extraction, detection of the mutation was done using allele-specific PCR. Positive samples were subsequently analyzed with PCR-RFLP by the restriction endonuclease BsaXI. The status of outpatient irrational prescription drug use before and after pharmacist interventions in 6 large scale hospitals was investigated to determine the underlying reasons and to promote rational clinical drug use. Materials and methods: The 5-step DMAIC method (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) in Six Sigma management was utilized to investigate irrational drug use in prescriptions. To be able to differentiate benign vertebral bone marrow lesions from malign lesions according to apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, enabling quantitative assessment, and to determine the sensitivity and the specificity in differentiating benign and malign lesions according to the optimal cutoff ADC value. Materials and methods: In 99 patients, 133 lesions in total were included in the study, 59 of which were benign (acute vertebral compression fracture depending on osteoporosis or trauma, spondylitis, atypical hemangioma), and 74 malign (malign compression fracture, metastasis). To evaluate the routine use of chromogenic media together with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) in gastrointestinal infections caused by Aeromonas spp. as rapid, practical, cost-effective and reliable methods. Materials and methods: Between August 2007 and March 2012, a total of 13,194 stool specimens of patients were included in the study. The stool samples and the reference strains were inoculated onto Cefsulodin-Irgasan-Novobiocin agar, sheep blood agar, eosin-methylene blue agar, and Hektoen enteric agar media together with CHROMagar Salmonella Plus. The myocardial performance index (Tei index), plasma N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) were used to investigate the effect of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on right ventricular function. Materials and methods: Twenty-three patients diagnosed with OSAS (moderate or severe AHI > 15) by polysomnography at Karadeniz Technical University Medical Faculty Chest Disease Clinic between September 2009 and September 2010 were included. To evaluate the association between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in women. Materials and methods: A total of 155 women with LUTS were included in the study.
