Objectives: To describe the number of hospital admissions for concussion at paediatric hospitals in the USA. To describe the use of imaging and medications for acute concussion paediatric patients.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Setting: Children's hospitals participating in the Pediatric Health Information System in the USA during a 10-year period.

Patients: All emergency department (ED) visits and inpatient admissions with the primary diagnosis of concussion, defined as International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes for: (1) concussion, (2) postconcussion syndrome or (3) skull fracture without mention of intracranial injury with concussion.

Background: The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) was observed in a Kenyan hospital from 2009 to 2010. Further investigation of the dissemination of CRAB isolates and the molecular characterization of associated resistance determinants were therefore performed.

Methods: Antibiotic susceptibilities were determined by broth microdilution and Etest. Metallo-blactamases were detected by Etest method. Clonal relationships were studied by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). b-Lactam and aminoglycoside resistance determinants and the clonal relatedness to widespread European clones were studied by PCR and sequencing.

In a landmark report, the Institute of Medicine found that minorities received lower-quality health care than Caucasians even when insurance status, income, and other factors were equivalent. The incidence of HIV among persons who inject drugs (PWIDU) has fallen in many nations, likely due to successes of clean needle/syringe exchange and substance abuse treatment and service programs. However in Pakistan, prevalence rates for PWID have risen dramatically. In several cities, prevalence exceeded 20% by 2009 compared to a 2003 baseline of just 0.5%. However, no cohort study of PWID has ever been conducted.

Objective: To compare the results of two automated analysers by measuring reproductive hormones using the same quality control.

Methods: Results obtained by the Roche Cobas e411 automated analyser in a specialised fertility clinic were compared to the Siemens Centaur CP for the reproductive hormones oestradiol, progesterone, LH, FSH and hCG.

Results: Commercially-available quality control (QC) samples showed significant differences between the two assays for all five hormones at one or more levels. The study was performed to evaluate the safety and toxicity of bronopol in striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. Bronopol product is licensed in Thailand and Vietnam for control of aquatic fungi and ciliated protozoa in scaleless fish at the daily dosage of 10 mg/l, 2-hour static immersion, for 5 consecutive days. The present study aimed to characterize chicken infectious anemia virus isolated from various outbreaks in Thailand during 2008-2011, and compare them with other strains from the GenBank database using molecular and bioinformatic techniques. For this purpose, thirteen samples were collected from eight commercial farms affected by chicken infectious anemia outbreak. All were positive by PCR and grouped in 2 clusters with phylogenetic analysis based on nucleotide sequencing, consistent with amino acid sequence analysis of the VP1 gene in the hypervariable region. Testicular atrophy is a major cause of culling in boars. Pathogenesis of this change is poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to investigate pathological changes of the genital tracts of culled boars with testicular atrophy. Twenty-eight genital organs of culled boars collected from slaughter houses in Thailand were pathologically examined. According to testicular weight, the organs were allocated into 4 groups: severe atrophy (n = 12), moderate atrophy (n = 4), mild atrophy (n = 4), and normal control (n = 8). Avibacterium paragallinarum is the causative agent of infectious coryza, an acute upper respiratory disease in chickens. The aim of this study was to characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility, resistance genes and the in vivo testing of antimicrobial susceptibility in chickens. Eighteen A. paragallinarum isolated in Thailand were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by broth microdilution method. A high prevalence of resistance MIC pattern to oxytetracycline, doxycycline, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim was found. This study aimed to investigate chemical quality of animal drinking used in livestock farms in Thailand. Samples and information from 68 pig farms, 35 chicken farms and 9 duckling farms were collected during March to August 2011. Water quality data were analyzed and compared with standard levels using the Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Tests. Results revealed that median chemical values of water for livestock were generally within standard levels, except manganese and iron, which were detected in surfacewater with median values of 0.183 and 0.506 ppm, respectively, and are both higher than standard limits for drinking water. Wenyonella philiplevinei is one of the important pathogens of duck coccidiasis. In the present study, a portion of the 18S rDNA was amplified from W. philiplevinei by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cloned and then sequenced. The sequences of 18S rDNA of all samples were 422 bp in size. A + T content of the 18S rDNA sequences was 58-59%. Sequence comparison revealed that the similarity in 18S rDNA sequences between Hunan isolates and W. philiplevinei available (Guangdong isolate) was more than 98%.
