This study was conducted to determine whether buccal cells obtained by swabbing could be a DNA source for genetic analysis, and to compare two preservative media, distilled water and Tris-EDTA (TE), pH 8.0. Buccal cell samples were collected from 30 domestic cats (Felis catus), 4 captive fishing cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) and 8 captive tigers (Panthera tigris). The total concentration of DNA and purity were not statistically different between the preservative media. All samples could be graded as a minimum as high quality DNA (DNA found with A260/A280 ratio >2.0 or < 1.8). In addition, the quality of DNA extracted from both media was successfully amplified for PCR. However, when compared to whole blood samples, total DNA concentration from buccal swab was significantly lower (p < 0.05) .Despite the decrease in DNA yield, buccal swab could be an alternative source for obtaining DNA for genetic analyses. This non-invasive, simple and inexpensive technique eases genetic studies in this family especially in domestic cat from which whole blood samples are difficult to collect.

The prevalence of H. pylori and the virulence markers cytotoxin-associated gene A and E (cagA, cagE) and vacuolating-associated cytotoxin gene (vacA) alleles varies in different parts of the world. H. pylori virulence markers cagA, cagE, and vacA alleles in local and Afghan nationals with H. pylori-associated gastroduodenal diseases were studied.

Enzymes of the Trm5 family catalyze methyl transfer from S-adenosyl methionine (AdoMet) to the N¹ of G37 to synthesize m¹ G37-tRNA as a critical determinant to prevent ribosome frameshift errors. Trm5 is specific to eukaryotes and archaea, and it is unrelated in evolution from the bacterial counterpart TrmD, which is a leading anti-bacterial target. The successful targeting of TrmD requires detailed information on Trm5 to avoid cross-species inhibition. However, most information on Trm5 is derived from studies of the archaeal enzyme Methanococcus jannaschii (MjTrm5), whereas little information is available for eukaryotic enzymes. The cause in 10 - 20% cases of liver cirrhosis (LC) cannot be elucidated, and are thus termed cryptogenic. Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are relatively rare, but the most common anomaly involving the pulmonary tree. Although the rare correlation between LC and PAVM is well-known, there have been no reports of PAVMs occurring in cryptogenic LC. Introduction:

Antithrombin or antithrombin III (ATIII) is a vitamin K-independent, natural anticoagulant that is the major inhibitor of thrombin. With the binding of heparin, a conformational change in antithrombin occurs that increases the inactivation of thrombin by antithrombin by 4000-fold. Antithrombin deficiency can be hereditary or acquired; the acquired form is frequently encountered in patients requiring mechanical circulatory support.

Formulation of clots within the circuit of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-threatening emergency and requires emergent intervention. Decreased ATIII is associated with a hypercoagulable state, which can lead to dangerous complications for patients requiring mechanical circulatory support.

Enterococci are among the leading pathogens isolated in hospital-acquired infections. Current antimicrobial options for vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are limited. Prior data suggests that daptomycin > 6mg/kg/day may be used to treat enterococcal infections. We retrospectively evaluated the effectiveness and safety of high-dose daptomycin (HD-daptomycin) therapy (> 6 mg/kg) in a multicenter cohort of adult patients with enterococcal infections to describe the characteristics and outcomes. Two-hundred and forty-five patients were evaluated. Enterococcus faecium was identified in 175 (71%), followed by 49 (20%) Enterococcus faecalis and 21 (9%) Enterococcus spp., overall 204 (83%) were VRE. The jumping spider Evarcha culicivora (Salticidae) has unusual links to Lantana camara, a plant species to which it is attracted. Three phytochemicals from the headspace of L. camara (1,8 cineole and especially β-caryophyllene and α-humulene) attract adult E. culicivora. These spiders, especially early-instar juveniles, feed on nectar, but adults may use L. camara as mating sites. The hypothesis we consider here is that, for E. culicivora juveniles, although not for adults, responding to plant odor is relevant in the specific context of acquiring nectar meals. The HIV-1 protein Vpr enhances macrophage infection, triggers G2 cell cycle arrest, and targets cells for NK-cell killing. Vpr acts through the CRL4^DCAF1 ubiquitin ligase complex to cause G2 arrest and trigger expression of NK ligands. Corresponding ubiquitination targets have not been identified. UNG2 and SMUG1 are the only known substrates for Vpr-directed depletion through CRL4^DCAF1. Here we identify the endoribonuclease Dicer as a target of HIV-1 Vpr-directed proteasomal degradation through CRL4^DCAF1. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have beneficial effects on degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) dogs with stages C and D (ACVIM classification) and on dogs with congestive heart failure. However, ACE inhibitors’ effects on stage B2 or asymptomatic DMVD dogs have still been uncertain. Ramipril is an ACE inhibitor that has lipophilic effects and can suppress ACE in cardiac tissue effectively. To study acute lung toxicity of various doses of colloidal silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), mice were intratracheally instilled with 0, 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000 ppm of Ag-NPs. Histopathology, autometallography (AMG) and immunohistochemistry were determined at 1, 3, 7 and 15 days post-exposure.Instillation of 100, 1,000 and 10,000 ppm Ag-NPs produced moderate to severe necrotizing bronchitis and alveolitiswith hypertrophy and hyperplasia of alveolar epithelial cells. The severity of the pulmonary inflammation and damage increased in a dose-dependent manner. Concomitant lamininimmunohistochemical findings generally correlated with pulmonary lesions. In the present study, the efficacy of different vaccination programs against a velogenic Newcastle disease virus (vNDV) challenged in 28-day-old broiler chickens was examined. The chickens were divided into 5 groups, 20 chickens in each. Group 1 did not receive any vaccine and served as the non-vaccinated control group. Groups 2-5 were vaccinated with different vaccination programs against vNDV. Three types of gentamicin beads were compared in a rat osteomyelitis model. The gentamicin beads were prepared in cylinder shape (diameter 2 mm x height 4 mm). Gentamicin impregnated polymethylmethacrylate (GIPMMA) beads were fabricated according to manufacturer’s instructions. Gentamicin coated native calcium sulfate (GNCS) bead and gentamicin coated high porous calcium sulfate (G-HPCS) bead were prepared in laboratory. This study aimed to perform an in vitro testing of the efficacy of various kinds of disinfectant on infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Four kinds of disinfectants including Virusnip, Omnicide, CID2000 and Virkon S were used for the virus inactivation test. After challenge with each strain of IBV for each contact time (30 seconds, 1, 5 and 30 minutes), we recorded number of dead embryo/6 inoculated eggs after incubation. Results showed that there was no significant difference among the contact times except 1:800 Virusnip tested for Tha07 (p < 0.05). For Tha03, there was a significant difference among the disinfectants at 30 seconds and 1 minute of contact times (p < 0.05). For Tha08, there was a significant difference among the disinfectants at 1 minute of contact time (p < 0.05). For Tha09, there was a significant difference among the disinfectants at 5 and 30 minutes of contact times (p < 0.05). For Tha10, there was a significant difference among the disinfectants at 5 minutes of contact time (p < 0.05). Virusnip revealed the ability to inactivate the activity of 9 IBV strains in all exposure times, especially at dilutions of 1 : 100 and 1 : 200.

Background

Photodynamic therapy with aminolevulinic acid (ALA PDT) for oral leukoplakia has shown promising effects in regression of oral leukoplakia. Although ALA has been extensively studied and is an ideal photosensitizer, the optimal light dose for treatment of oral leukoplakia has not been determined. We conducted a phase I study to determine MTD and DLT of PDT in patients treated with ALA for leukoplakia.

Methods

Patients with histologically confirmed oral leukoplakia received a single treatment of ALA PDT in cohorts with escalating doses of light (585 nm). Clinical, histologic, and biologic markers were assessed.

Introduction: Whether there is a gender difference in fatigue and recovery from maximal velocity fatiguing contractions and across muscles is not understood. Methods: Sixteen men and 19 women performed 90 isotonic contractions at maximal voluntary shortening velocity (maximal velocity concentric contractions, MVCC) with the elbow flexor and knee extensor muscles (separate days) at a load equivalent to 20% maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). Results: Power (from MVCCs) decreased similarly for men and women for both muscles (P > 0.05).
