Aims: Detection of risk groups and infection sources and awareness of the routes of transmission of infections are important for prevention of hospital infections. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the knowledge level and the behavior models of hospital cleaning staff about nosocomial infections. Materials and Methods: A 21-item questionnaire about nosocomial infections was administered to the hospital cleaning staff. Results: Out of 290 hospital cleaning staff, 240 (82.7%, 122 male, 118 female, aged 36.2±8.7) were included in the study. Aims: This study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Materials and Methods: A total of 660 unvaccinated persons 1 to 30 years old were selected for the study with cluster sampling. Information on sociodemographic characteristics was gathered for each participant and, in 641 of them, anti-HAV antibodies were assayed using an enzyme immune assay. Results: Anti-HAV prevalence in the Turkish population under the age of 30 in Northern Cyprus was 23.9%. Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of consanguineous marriages and the associated factors in the city of Malatya. Materials and Methods: Thirty cluster survey methodology was used to select the study population. Selecting 13 married women per cluster, a total of 409 women were interviewed at their home. Information on the sociodemographic and fertility characteristics of the women and genetic disorders among children was gathered using a face-to-face questionnaire. Orbital emphysema is a rare ocular emergency in the absence of trauma, sinusitis and/or surgical intervention. We report a case of orbital emphysema in a 29-year-old male caused by forceful blowing of the nose. The patient presented with sudden and painful onset of right periorbital swelling and nose-bleed following forceful blowing of the nose. There was no history of sinusitis, facial trauma or previous surgery. Examination of the patient disclosed crepitant eyelid swelling, ptosis, and mild unilateral exophthalmos and inferomedial strabismus in the neutral position. Thyroglossal duct cysts are usually located at the midline of the neck. While the coexistence of a carcinoma in a thyroglossal duct cyst is extremely rare, papillary carcinoma represents almost 80% of the cases. Its treatment is usually decided based on postoperative histopathological examinations. Although the Sistrunk procedure is often seen as adequate, the treatment of thyroglossal duct cysts remains controversial. In the present study, the Sistrunk procedure was used to excise a thyroglossal duct cyst in a 24-year-old female. Aim: Falls from a height and their subsequent injuries and traumas can cause morbidity and death. In the present study, ISS, NISS, RTS, and TRISS values were analyzed to assess mortality probabilities of patients who fell from a height. Materials and Methods: Patients' age, gender, height of falls (0-2 m, 3-5 m, and 6 m and above), organ pathologies, and ISS, NISS, RTS, and TRISS scores were evaluated in terms of mortality. A 13-year-old girl presented with a three-month history of generalized blisters on her body following a traumatic injury to her leg with a piece of wood while farming. The lesions were hemorrhagic, itchy and tender on pressure. The patient was non-diabetic, non-leukemic, non-neutropenic, and not previously on immunosuppressive drugs, nor was there any evidence of immunosuppression. Culture and microscopic examination of scrapings from the skin lesions revealed growth of a Mucor spp. She was initially placed on potassium iodide and responded well for about a month, then relapsed. The patient was successfully treated with itraconazole monotherapy.

A Simple Surgical Technique For Repair Of Iridodialysis, Şengül Özdek, Mehmet Cüneyt Özmen

A simple surgical technique is described for repair of iridodialysis and a traumatic iridodialysis case is presented. In this technique, a 10-0 polypropylene suture is used for repair. The knot is left in the anterior chamber to avoid suture related complications such as erosion, patient discomfort, and infection. This technique can be a safe and easy way to repair large iridodialysis.

Linear and whorled nevoid hypermelanosis (LWNH) is a reticulate pigmentary disorder with a sporadic occurrence, generally representing a genetic mosaicism. In this case, we describe a two-month-old girl with trisomy 13, who presented with various systemic anomalies such as congenital ventricular septal defect, microcephaly, auricular deformities, flatness of nasal root, overlapping fingers, umbilical hernia, and LWNH. G-banding chromosomal analyses were performed on cultured peripheral blood lymphocytes of the patient and the parents. The karyotype of the patient was 47, XX,+13[100], with no mosaicism. Background: Pilomatricoma is a rare, benign adnexal tumor differentiating toward elements of the hair matrix and shaft. It typically presents as a solitary, deep, dermal nodule. In addition, bullous changes can be rarely seen. Methods: A 16-year-old girl with firm, mobile, multilobule and non-tender mass that has a soft, hemorrhagic blister-like formation on the left infraclavicular region is described. Results: The histopathologic findings were consistent with pilomatricoma. In the dermis above the tumor, there were numerous dilated lymphatic and blood vessels. Aim: Gram-negative microorganisms are responsible for a significant percentage of systemic bacterial infections in neonates, which tend to progress to sepsis. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), one of the receptors in the innate immune system, binds to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) present on gram-negative bacteria. Following ligation, a cascade of cellular signals leads to activation of NF\kappaB, resulting in the generation of such proinflammatory cytokines as TNF\alpha, IL-1, IL-2, and IL-6. The methylotrophic yeast, Pichia pastoris, has been used to successfully produce and express over 700 heterologous proteins. Currently, the only two dominant selectable markers available are the Zeocin and blasticidin resistance genes. This study focused on characterizing and developing the modified G418 selectable marker so it could be used for primary selection of single copy and multicopy strains. To demonstrate its use as a selectable marker the SLPI reporter gene was inserted into the Zeocin resistance vector, pPICZB, and the new G418 resistance vector, pKANa B. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the extent to which public health nursing in Michigan local health departments (LHDs) has based services and programs on research and other evidence. Method: The study was conducted using a descriptive survey design. The sample was composed of the 45 chief administrators of public health nursing services in each of the 45 Michigan LHDs. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Narrative answers to open-ended items were examined to determine patterns. Using Card Matching Games To Reinforce Health Concepts At A Public Health Event, George W. Dombi

Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer for males and females combined, after lung cancer. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may play a role in colorectal cancer prevention. During March 13-18, 2009, the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Network (CRAN) of Southeastern Michigan, in partnership with Get Your Guts in Gear presented CoCo the Colossal Colon®, a 40-foot long, human colon model at the Detroit Science Center.
