OBJECTIVE: To evaluate remission rate of anti-thyroid drug treatment in patients with Grave's disease, and to study the factors associated with remission.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross sectional study.

METHODOLOGY: Seventy four patients of Grave's disease were recruited who were prescribed medical treatment. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether receptor status and HER-2/neu status remains same in primary and metastatic breast carcinoma to corresponding lymph nodes of individual patients.

METHODS: Estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER-2/neu immunohistochemical stains were performed on primary and metastatic breast carcinoma to axillary lymph nodes in 100 patients. Data was collected on a Performa and age, tumour size, type, grade and expression of ER, PR and HER-2/neu on primary and metastatic tumours were recorded.

Child maltreatment victims are at increased risk for a multitude of symptoms, including: internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety), behavior problems (e.g., aggression) and post-traumatic stress symptoms (Paolucci, Genuis, & Violato, 2001). Not all maltreated children present with the same outcomes, and research consistently demonstrates child abuse does not have an inevitable pattern or a unified presentation of symptoms. Some youth may be asymptomatic following abuse; others display a myriad of symptoms at varying levels of severity (Kendall-Tackett, Williams, & Finkelhor, 1993). A small percentage of this group becomes suicidal.

Treponema denticola has been identified as an important cause of periodontal disease and hypothesized to be involved in extra-oral infections. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of T. denticola cell length and motility during mouse peritoneal macrophages in vitro uptake. Macrophages, incubated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, produced a similar amount of TNF-α when stimulated with Escherichia coli LPS. The uptake of FlgE- and CfpA-deficient mutants of T. denticola was significantly increased compared with the wild-type strain, due to cell size or lack of motility. Opsonization with specific antibodies considerably improved the treponemes’ uptake. …

We examined the costs of a physical activity (PA) and an educational comparison intervention. 424 older adults at risk for mobility disability were randomly assigned to either condition. The PA program consisted of center-based exercise sessions 3x weekly for 8 weeks, 2x weekly for weeks 9 to 24 and weekly behavioral counseling for 10 weeks. Optional sessions were offered during maintenance weeks (25-52). The comparison intervention consisted of weekly education meetings for 24 weeks, and then monthly for 6 months. Cost analyses were conducted from the "payer's" perspective, with a 1-year time horizon. Intervention costs were estimated by tracking personnel …

There are a variety of published prenatal care (PNC) guidelines that claim a scientific basis for the information included. Four sets of PNC guidelines published between 2005 and 2009 were examined and critiqued. The recommendations for assessment procedures, laboratory testing, and education/counseling topics were analyzed within and between these guidelines. The PNC components were synthesized to provide an organized, comprehensive appendix that can guide providers of antepartum care. The appendix may be used to locate which guidelines addressed which topics to assist practitioners to identify evidence sources. Screening for intimate partner violence is an important injury prevention strategy. Nurses who develop staff education, to promote screening, need to select a method that is sensitive to learners. Online learning, although convenient, is not well suited to sensitive topics such as screening for intimate partner violence. The purpose of this article is to describe a curriculum for intimate partner violence screening based on self-efficacy theory, which includes a hospital-produced video, a role play, and a discussion.

The objective of this work is to develop subconjunctivally implantable, biodegradable hydrogels for sustained release of intact insulin to the retina to prevent and treat retinal neurovascular degeneration such as diabetic retinopathy. The hydrogels are synthesized by UV photopolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) monomer and a dextran macromer containing multiple hydrolytically degradable oligolactate-(2-hydroxyetheyl methacrylate) units (Dex-lactateHEMA) in 25:75 (v:v) ethanol:water mixture solvent. Insulin is loaded into the hydrogels during the synthesis process with loading efficiency up to 98%. The hydrogels can release biologically active insulin in vitro for at least one week and the release kinetics can be modulated by varying …

Both equilibrium and nonequilibrium factors influence the efficacy of pharmaceutical agents that target intermediate states of biochemical reactions. We explored the intermediate state inhibition of gp41, part of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein complex (Env) that promotes viral entry through membrane fusion. This process involves a series of gp41 conformational changes coordinated by Env interactions with cellular CD4 and a chemokine receptor. In a kinetic window between CD4 binding and membrane fusion, the N- and C-terminal regions of the gp41 ectodomain become transiently susceptible to inhibitors that disrupt Env structural transitions. The larynx is a rare site of involvement of amyloidosis. We report two cases of laryngeal amyloidosis. Both patients were middle aged females with history of persistent hoarseness. Fibreoptic laryngoscopy used for diagnosis in both and debulking of the tumour was performed. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of amyloidosis. Appropriate follow up is an important part of the long-term management of the disease.

Mobile medical sensors promise to provide an efficient, accurate, and economic way to monitor patients' health outside the hospital. Patient authentication is a necessary security requirement in remote health monitoring scenarios. The monitoring system needs to make sure that the data is coming from the right person before any medical or financial decisions are made based on the data. Credential-based authentication methods (e.g., passwords, certificates) are not well-suited for remote healthcare as patients could hand over credentials to someone else. Recent scientific findings about the developing teen brain have both captured public attention and begun to percolate through legal theory and practice. Indeed, many believe that developmental neuroscience contributed to the U.S. Supreme Court’s elimination of the juvenile death penalty in Roper v. Simmons. Post-Roper, scholars assert that the developmentally normal attributes of the teen brain counsel differential treatment of young offenders, and advocates increasingly make such arguments before the courts. This is a rare case of a young male with biopsy proven adenoid cystic carcinoma of the external auditory canal who underwent excision of the lesion with superficial parotidectomy sparing the facial nerve. Histopathology showed perineural invasion, which is a diagnostic hallmark of adenoid cystic carcinoma. Clinical examination, chest X-ray and CT scan showed no signs of recurrence or metastasis 2 years postoperatively.

Background: Bone marrow (BM) reticulin fibers can be increased in conditions such as neoplasms and autoimmune diseases (Frisch Haematol [Budap] 1982; Aharon Lupus 1997) and can lead to a clinical situation similar to osteomyelofibrosis. In healthy individuals, grade 1 and 2 reticulin have been reported in 27–70% and 4–20% of BM biopsies, respectively (Hultdin Med Onc 2007; Beckman Arch Path Int Med 1990; Bauermeister Am J Clin Path 1971). Phyllodes tumour is an uncommon fibro epithelial tumour of breast that often presents clinically as a rapidly enlarging lump. On mammography it appears as a soft tissue density well circumscribed mass. Ultrasound shows it to be a solid hypoechoic mass with small cystic spaces. A case of malignant phyllodes tumour with an atypical appearance of intracystic tumour on sonography is reported with pertinent imaging features and histopathological diagnostic criteria. The tumour had undergone osteosarcomatous differentiation.

PURPOSE: The tumor growth kinetics of the human LoVo colorectal xenograft model was assessed in response to vandetanib, an orally available receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, radiotherapy (RT), or irinotecan (CPT-11), as single therapies and in combination. METHODS AND MATERIALS: LoVo cells were injected subcutaneously into the right hind limb (5 x 10(6) cells in 100 microL phosphate-buffered saline) of athymic NCR NUM mice and tumors were grown to a volume of 200-300 mm(3) before treatment. This study aimed to identify the variables that influence parental treatment decisions after a prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD). The authors reviewed all cases of prenatally diagnosed structural CHD from August 1998 to December 2006 at their center. The following variables were studied as potential predictors of parental intent to treat: maternal age, race, insurance status, obstetric history, fetal gender, univentricular versus biventricular cardiac physiology, and fetal chromosomal abnormality. Uni- and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed. In the review, 252 consecutive cases of prenatally diagnosed CHD were identified.
