Longevity in humans is determined by multiple environmental and genetic factors. We have investigated possible associations between longevity and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in the p21 (CDKN1A) gene, a stress-inducible senescence-associated cell cycle inhibitor, expression of which upregulates genes implicated in several age-related diseases. By sequencing the promoter and exons of p21 in genomic DNA of ten individuals over 90 years old, we have identified 30 SNPs, many of which had not been previously characterized. A cluster of minor alleles within the -4547/-3489 bp region did not alter the basal activity or p53 responsiveness of the p21 promoter. We then …

This retrospective chart review is to evaluate the changes in personal health markers that serve as prognostic indicators in the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Subjects in the Patient Assistance Liaison (PAL) Program at the Diabetes Resource Center (DRC) of the St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island Hospital for Specialty Care have no health insurance to pay for needed services and medications. An automated algorithm and methodology is presented to identify tumor-tissue morphologies based on broadband scatter data measured by raster scan imaging of the samples. A quasi-confocal reflectance imaging system was used to directly measure the tissue scatter reflectance in situ, and the spectrum was used to identify the scattering power, amplitude, and total wavelength-integrated intensity. Pancreatic tumor and normal samples were characterized using the instrument, and subtle changes in the scatter signal were encountered within regions of each sample. Discrimination between normal versus tumor tissue was readily performed using a K-nearest neighbor classifier algorithm. A similar approach worked …

Rural women, particularly those residing in Appalachia, have some of the nation’s highest cervical cancer mortality rates. With support from federal and private grants, the University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard is attempting to address this issue. Eastern Kentucky-based researchers are surveying 18- to 26-year-old female community health center patients and college students about their risk factors for the disease, and then offering them free Gardasil, a vaccine against the virus that causes most cervical cancer cases.

Purposes of this study were to explore relationships between cardiac autonomic risk factors of heart rate variability (HRV), QT corrected (QTc) Interval duration, and Cornell voltage measures for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) to body mass index (BMI), relative body mass index (RBMI), and blood pressure (BP) measures, and to examine the effects of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), hypertension, and race on these cardiac autonomic risk factors in overweight-obese adolescents.

From among numerous potential causes of dental malocclusion, tooth size has been implicated as one factor. Prior studies show that mesiodistally larger teeth increase the risk of malocclusion. The present report extends our understanding by testing for graded responses between crown size and the extent of dental malocclusion. Maximum mesiodistal crown dimensions of all 14 permanent tooth types (excluding third molars) were measured in 207 American white adolescents (routine orthodontic patients), and 10 measures of malocclusion (e.g., rotations, displacements, spacing) were recorded. Recent interest in sensory gating in children with and without neuropsychological disorders has resulted in a number of studies and the results regarding the developmental trajectory of sensory gating are inconsistent. We investigated the maturational course of sensory gating in samples of typically developing children and children with sensory processing deficits (SPD) and compared their performance to adults. Metnase is a recently evolved human protein with methylase (SET) and nuclease domains that is widely expressed, especially in proliferating tissues. Metnase promotes plasmid and viral DNA integration, and through an interaction with topoisomerase IIα (TopoIIα) it promotes chromosome decatenation. Metnase interacts with DNA ligase IV, promotes non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ), and repression causes mild hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation. TopoIIα has a proposed role in relaxing positive supercoils in front of replication forks. NHEJ factors have been implicated in the replication stress response. Transient global ischemia to the mouse results in hypoxic hypoperfusion to the brain and can lead to regional vulnerability, inflammation, and cell death. Characterization of this model with varying occlusion and reperfusion times allowed us to provide evidence for a consistent injury to the hippocampus and white matter regions of the brain. Following 30 minutes of bilateral carotid artery occlusion (BCAO) and 7 days of reperfusion, hippocampal injury to the CA2 region was consistently identified with neuronal loss and fluorojade positive cells. Hand hygiene (HH) is the single most important factor in the prevention of health care-acquired infections. The 3 most frequently reported methods of measuring HH compliance are: (1) direct observation, (2) self-reporting by health care workers (HCWs), and (3) indirect calculation based on HH product usage. This article presents the results of a 12-month multicenter collaboration assessing HH compliance rates at US health care facilities by measuring product usage and providing feedback about HH compliance. Our results show that HH compliance at baseline was 26% for intensive care units (ICUs) and 36% for non-ICUs. After 12 months of measuring product …
