Lack of reliable data about foreign-born groups creates gaps in demographic measurement methodology leading to a cycle of misinformed policy development. Haitian immigrants represent one of the largest foreign-born groups in Florida. Only limited information is available on the health care issues that they face. Musculoskeletal ultrasonography is a widely used diagnostic tool to visualize shoulder tendon pathology. The diagnostic accuracy for biceps tendon pathology is high. An empty groove may be seen when there is complete rupture, and the long head tendon markedly retracts into the arm. We report a case of ruptured tendon of the right biceps brachii in a 55-year-old male injured during pull-up exercise 2 years ago. Sonography demonstrated the presence of echoic material filling the bicipital groove. This material erroneously resembled the biceps tendon and resulted in a false first impression of intact tendon. Musculoskeletal ultrasound has been utilized in rehabilitation medicine for many years. However, the accuracy and speed of the examination are very operator-dependent. It is often difficult for inexperienced operators to locate target structures quickly. We therefore designed this study to determine the best positioning for the transducer to detect the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii on shoulder ultrasonography.One hundred people (200 shoulders) were recruited, including 33 men and 67 women, with a mean age of 50.8±12.5 years. MELAS (mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and recurrent stroke-like episodes) syndrome is a mitochondrial disorder. Patients with mitochondrial myopathies typically have exercise-induced symptoms. Thus, patients are often advised to avoid exercise, which leads to deconditioning. Currently, the concept of aerobic exercise training as therapy for mitochondrial disease is not well established. We report the case of a patient with adult-onset MELAS, who responded positively to a low intensity rehabilitation program. Low intensity training was safe and significantly improved our patient's physical fitness. During the 20-month follow-up period, there was no significant reduction in muscle strength and function. In order to determine the prevalence of medical complications after spinal cord injury, 52 patients who received regular follow up in a rehabilitation hospital (average 14.1 years) were studied. Medical records were reviewarticleed and analyzed, including demographic data, onset duration, neurological level, locomotion, reason for visiting doctor's office, rehospitalization, medication usage, and surgical intervention. The most common complication encountered was constipation (82.7%). Other common complications were neurogenic bladder dysfunction (80.8%), urinary tract infection (75.0%), musculoskeletal pain (71.2%), spasticity (67.3%) and gastrointestinal disturbance (51.9%). reviewarticleing the medical records in the most recent year, constipation was still the most common complication (46.2%). …

This study tested the utility of the Be HeadSmart® Seniors! fall prevention intervention, HeadSmartz, a Cranium Challenge, in the promotion of safety improvement behavior change. It employed a quasi-experimental two-group design. Of the 106 individuals included in this study, 64 received the intervention and 42 only received the safety brochure. The Cranium Challenge is an interactive, visual, and auditory program based upon the popular board game CraniumTM. This game stimulated various parts of the participant’s brain verbally, through trivia questions and word games, visually, or by humming, whistling, or playing charades. The linkages between self-regulation in childhood, risk proneness in early adolescence, and risky sexual behavior in mid-adolescence were examined in a cohort of children (N = 518) from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. The possible mediating role of two early adolescent variables (substance use and negative peer pressure) was also examined. Self-regulation was assessed by maternal report at ages 8–9, and risk proneness, comprising aspects of sensation seeking and decision making, was assessed by adolescent self-report at ages 12–13. Structural equation models predicting risky sexual behavior at ages 16–17 indicated that self-regulation operated partly through early adolescent substance use, …

Background. All vectors of human malaria, a disease responsible for more than one million deaths per year, are female mosquitoes from the genus Anopheles. Evarcha culicivora is an East African jumping spider (Salticidae) that feeds indirectly on vertebrate blood by selecting blood-carrying female mosquitoes as preferred prey. Methodology/Principal Findings. By testing with motionless lures made from mounting dead insects in lifelike posture on cork discs, we show that E. culicivora selects Anopheles mosquitoes in preference to other mosquitoes and that this predator can identify Anopheles by static appearance alone. The preparation of novel microemulsions to be used as precursors for solid nanoparticles is described. The microemulsion precursors consist of either alcohol-in-fluorocarbon microemulsions, liquid hydrocarbon-in-fluorocarbon microemulsions, or liquid hydrocarbon-in-water microemulsions. The formed solid nanoparticles have diameters below 200 nanometers and can be made to entrap various materials including drugs, magnets, and sensors. The solid nanoparticles can be made to target different cells in the body by the inclusion of a cell-specific targeting ligand. Methods of preparing the novel microemulsion precursors and methods to cure solid nanoparticles are provided.

Pengobatan diare pada balita di Puskesmas Kabupaten Sumedang dilaksanakan di Poli KIA yang sehari-harinya ditangani oleh bidan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat kepatuhan bidan dan faktor-faktor yang berhubungan dengan kepatuhan bidan dalam penggunaan obat secara rasional pada balita diare akut non spesifik. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah cross-sectional dengan jumlah sampel 109 bidan yang berasal dari 18 puskesmas yang dipilih secara random. Pengukuran kepatuhan dilakukan dengan pengamatan terhadap resep yang ditulis oleh bidan untuk balita penderita diare akut non spesifik. Formal description of plant phenotypes and standardized annotation of gene expression and protein localization data require uniform terminology that accurately describes plant anatomy and morphology. This facilitates cross species comparative studies and quantitative comparison of phenotypes and expression patterns. A major drawback is variable terminology that is used to describe plant anatomy and morphology in publications and genomic databases for different species. The same terms are sometimes applied to different plant structures in different taxonomic groups. Conversely, similar structures are named by their species-specific terms. Background: Short stature affects approximately 2% of children, representing one of the more frequent disorders for which clinical attention is sought during childhood. Despite assumed genetic heterogeneity, mutations or deletions of the short stature homeobox-containing gene (SHOX) are found quite frequently in subjects with short stature. Haploinsufficiency of the SHOX gene causes short stature with highly variable clinical severity, ranging from isolated short stature without dysmorphic features to Léri-Weill syndrome, and with no functional copy of the SHOX gene, Langer syndrome.
