Adaptive Multimodal Biometric Fusion Algorithm Using Particle Swarm, Kalyan Veeramachaneni, Lisa Ann Osadciw, Pramod K. Varshney

This paper introduces a new algorithm called “Adaptive Multimodal Biometric Fusion Algorithm”(AMBF), which is a combination of Bayesian decision fusion and particle swarm optimization. A Bayesian framework is implemented to fuse decisions received from multiple biometric sensors. The system’s accuracy improves for a subset of decision fusion rules. The optimal rule is a function of the error cost and a priori probability of an intruder. This Bayesian framework formalizes the design of a system that can adaptively increase or reduce the security level. Particle swarm optimization searches the decision and sensor operating points (i.e. thresholds) space to achieve the desired …

This qualitative study describes the childrearing practices among the Igbos of Eastern Nigeria, and offers implications for social work and educational services for African immigrants raising families in the United States. First objective for the study was to ascertain how rural Igbos of Eastern Nigeria raise their children from birth to age eight years of age. Second objective was to determine parent's concept of reward and punishment, how gender role is communicated, and what constitutes parental expectations from successful parenting. Increasing proportions of children are being raised in single parent households, reflecting both rising divorce rates, the growing percentage of births to unmarried women and adoption by single parents. The motivational interviewing skills code (MISC) was used to review 86 audiotaped interactions between clinicians and patients participating in a smoking cessation intervention. Intraclass correlations (ICCs) were completed for two of the MISC elements: global evaluations and behavior counts. Results indicate 75% of the global ratings yielded ICCs in the good to excellent range, while only 44% of the behavior counts yielded this level of accuracy. Adherence scores were created to form overall ratings of clinician adherence to using motivational interviewing and 80% of these competence measures yielded ICCs in the good to excellent range. The objectives of this study were to identify the prevalence of shared learning in U.S. physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) education programs; determine what terminology is used for these courses; and identify perceived barriers, benefits, and challenges of the educational interactions. A survey, designed to collect information about the educational interaction between PT and OT students, was mailed to all program directors (n = 206) at each of the academic institutions (N = 103) in the United States with accredited or developing entry-level programs in PT and OT. Leishmania donovani express two members of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family; LdNT1 encoded by two closely related and linked genes, LdNT1.1 and LdNT1.2, that transport adenosine and pyrimidine nucleosides and LdNT2 that transports inosine and guanosine exclusively. LdNT1.1, LdNT1.2, and LdNT2 have been expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes and found to be electrogenic in the presence of nucleoside ligands for which they mediate transport. Further analysis revealed that ligand uptake and transport currents through LdNT1-type transporters are proton-dependent. In addition to the flux of protons that is coupled to the transport reaction, LdNT1 transporters mediate a variable constitutive proton …

The relationship between panic disorder and nonpsychiatric medical illness is complex, but some evidence suggests that panic disorder increases risk for a variety of nonpsychiatric medical conditions. Given the demonstrated efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder, we were interested in evaluating the effects of CBT for panic disorder on nonpsychiatric medical symptoms among these patients. Patients were randomized to a 12-week group-administered CBT protocol (n = 22) or a delayedtreatment conlrol (n = 24). วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาความรู้และพฤติกรรมในการสร้างเสริมและป้องกันทันตสุขภาพของประชาชนในชุมชน เขตบางรัก กรุงเทพมหานคร วัสดุและวิธีการใช้แบบสอบถามเก็บข้อมูลโดยสุ่มตัวอย่างอย่างง่าย รวบรวมข้อมูลและวิเคราะห์ด้วยโปรแกรม SPSS ใช้ค่าสถิติ 2. test กําหนดค่านัยสําคัญ p < 0.05 ผลการศึกษา พบว่าจากประชาชนกลุ่มตัวอย่าง 235 ราย มีความรู้ในเรื่องการแปรงฟันที่ถูกวิธี สาเหตุโรคฟันผุ และโรคเหงือก การป้องกันโรคฟันผุ การป้องกันโรคเหงือก คิดเป็นร้อยละ 74, 35.1, 86, และ 70.2 ตามลําดับ มี ความรู้ในเรื่องการเคลือบฟันด้วยฟลูออไรด์ในเด็ก การเคลือบหลุมร่องฟัน การรับประทานฟลูออไรด์เสริม และ การตรวจฟันด้วยตนเอง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 39.6, 57.9, 62.6, และ 38.7 ตามลําดับ ในด้านพฤติกรรมการดูแลสุขภาพ ฟันนั้น พบว่าร้อยละ 91.1แปรงฟันวันละ 2 ครั้งขึ้นไป ร้อยละ 64.3 พบทันตแพทย์เมื่อมีปัญหาทันตสุขภาพ และ ร้อยละ 16.2 ไปพบทันตแพทย์เพื่อตรวจฟันประจําปี จากการวิเคราะห์ทางสถิติในกลุ่มตัวอย่างนี้พบว่า ผู้หญิง ผู้มี การศึกษาสูง และผู้ที่มีรายได้เพียงพอ มีความรู้และพฤติกรรมทางทันตสุขภาพดีกว่า ผู้ชาย ผู้มีการศึกษาที่ต่ํากว่า และผู้ที่มีรายได้ไม่เพียงพอ การเรียนรู้ทันตสุขภาพจากโทรทัศน์และจากโฆษณา มีความสัมพันธ์กับการเรียนรู้วิธี แปรงฟันที่ถูกต้องและการป้องกันโรคเหงือก และความต้องการให้สอนทันตสุขศึกษาทางสื่อต่าง ๆ มีความสัมพันธ์กับ การเรียนรู้จากโทรทัศน์ อย่างมีนัยสําคัญ (p < 0.05)สรุป ประชาชนในชุมชนเขตบางรัก กรุงเทพมหานคร ยังขาดความรู้ด้านการสร้างเสริมและป้องกันทันตสุขภาพอีก หลายประการ ความรู้และพฤติกรรมในการสร้างเสริมป้องกันทันตสุขภาพมีความสัมพันธ์ กับ เพศ อายุ ระดับ การศึกษา และรายได้ของบุคคล สื่อโทรทัศน์มีอิทธิพลต่อการเรียนรู้ของประชาชน

This article examines the impact of e-mail on the physician-patient relationship, and how contract law can resolve the uncertainties incumbent in this nascent form of communication. Significantly, courts have yet to indicate when the physician-patient relationship begins by e-mail, or to what extent e-mail affects the duties of the relationship. Instead of waiting for judicial guidance, physicians and patients can employ specialized contracts to clarify the role that e-mail plays in their relationship. As a result, more physicians and patients will regard e-mail correspondence as a valuable means of communication, and a tool for improving the quality of health care …

This article provides a psychiatric perspective on the problems Atkins raises for courts that handle death penalty cases. In contrast to the overarching aim of the majority's opinion in Atkins - making the administration of capital punishment more equitable - the Supreme Court's latest prescription of psychiatric help may only add a new layer of complexity and confusion to the already capricious process through which the U.S. criminal justice system imposes death sentences. The article briefly review's the Supreme Court's 1989 Penry decision, focusing on the role that evidence of mental retardation played in death penalty cases before Atkins was …

ABSTRACT

[Ca²⁺]_i and electrical activity were compared in isolated β-cells and islets using standard techniques. In islets, raising glucose caused a decrease in [Ca²⁺]_i followed by a plateau and then fast (2–3 min⁻¹), slow (0.2–0.8 min⁻¹), or a mixture of fast and slow [Ca²⁺]_i oscillations. In β-cells, glucose transiently decreased and then increased [Ca²⁺]_i, but no islet-like oscillations occurred. Simultaneous recordings of [Ca²⁺]_i and electrical activity suggested that differences in [Ca²⁺]_i signaling are due to …
