History Of Depression And Smoking Cessation Outcome: A Meta-Analysis, Brian Hitsman, Belinda Borrelli, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Bonnie Spring, Raymond Niaura

The authors conducted a meta-analysis of published studies to (a) evaluate the premise that a history of major depression is associated with failure to quit smoking and (b) identify factors that moderate the relationship between history of depression and cessation outcome. Fifteen studies met the selection requirements and were coded for various study methodology and treatment characteristics. DSTAT was used to calculate individual study effect sizes, determine the mean effect size across studies, and test for moderator effects. No differences in either short-term (≤ 3 months) or long-term abstinence rates (≥ 6 months) were observed between smokers positive versus negative …

In this review article, we have described the clinical approach in detecting and confirming myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) that elicit clinical complaints. In the last decade, the pathophysiology of MTrPs has been much clarified based on clinical and basic science research work. An MTrP is a hyperirritable spot in a taut band of skeletal muscle fibers with characteristics related to central sensitization in the spinal cord. The pathological diagnosis should include: (1) the electromyographic (EMG) recording and ultrasound imaging of local twitch responses (LTRs), (2) the EMG recording of spontaneous electrical activity (endplate noise) at multiple active loci in the …

To evaluate the immediate effects of acupuncture therapy in myofascial pain syndrome (MPS), 13 subjects (11 females and 2 males), aged from 34 to 59 years old were recruited and all had suffered MPS anywhere from 1 to 180 months. The oblique insertion of an acupuncture needle was performed at an Ah's point (trigger point, TrP) and through the associated taut band without any twirling. The needle was removed anywhere from several seconds to 2 to 3 minutes after insertion whenever the needle sensation disappeared. Stretch reflex dynamics, including assessment of reflex threshold angle (RTA) and reflex threshold velocity (RTV), has been used for quantitative evaluation for spastic hypertonia. However, neither a reliable clinical scale nor objective instrumental measurement had been developed to quantify clinical hypotonia. The purpose of the present study is to assess stretch reflex dynamics in subjects with different muscle tones, in terms of RTA and RTV to the voluntarily contracted quadriceps femoris muscle .Twenty-four subjects were classified into 3 groups (hypotonic, ”normotonic” or normal, and hypertonic) according to clinical presentation of the muscle tone. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) or familial telangiectasia, also called Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, is an autosomal dominant systemic vascular disorder characterized by recurrent hemorrhage all over the whole body. The estimated incidence is approximately 1 to 2 per 100,000 people. Major clinical manifestations include frequent epistaxis, mucosal telangiectases and visceral arterio-venous malformations. A 74-year-old man diagnosed as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome was reported. He was operated for brain abscess. The complications included left hemiparesis, seizure and hallucination. Pronator syndrome as a compression of median nerve at proximal forearm level is uncommon in all entrapment neuropathies. Only one case with bilateral pronator syndrome has been reported in the literature. A 51 year-old female suffered from numbness over bilateral hands for years, then she received neurolysis of median nerves at wrist level under the impression of bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. Four months after operation, she still suffered from grip weakness and numbness over forearms and bilateral radial 3 and half fingers. The prevalence and antibiotic sensitivity of E. coli., and haemolytic E. coli. F4+ and haemolytic E. coli. F4- (E/F4+, E/F4-, HE/F4+ and HE/F4-) was investigated in five hundred and thirty, randomly collected, rectal swabs from pig herds in five areas of Thailand, between the dates June 2000 and January 2001. The prevalence of E/F4+, in each area was statistically significantly different with a range of 21.8-42.5% (30.4±8.8%). The greatest prevalence was found in the Northern area of Thailand, following by the Central, Western, Eastern, and Northeastern areas, respectively. Postmodern and poststructuralist theorizations of the interrelations of the particular and the universal have identified women's bodies to be the last frontier for scientific discovery leading to and satisfying the modern compulsion to stabilize and control life from birth to death. This institutional ethnography of one city's response to an elevated infant mortality rate among the babies of African American urban, impoverished women explores their discursive transformation from single mothers who cannot begin prenatal care before the second trimester because too few physicians will treat Medicaid patients, into sexually-immoral, illegaldrug- using women who deliberately harm their babies. This article originates from a research study that explores 'what happened' to a 10-year-old child with Rett syndrome, who died from "severe malnutrition" according to a Coroners Service inquest jury. The inquest evidence analyzed, using institutional ethnography, shows that approximately one week prior to this child's death three health care providers (an emergency physician, a hospice volunteer and a home care nurse) conducted individual assessments of the child. Child protection workers were also involved. Textual analysis of the health care providers' records shows how the child was officially and textually constructed as 'dying from a terminal illness' in contrast to …

Dna Fingerprinting Of Leptospira Spp. Using A Repetitive Sequence-Based Polymerase Chain Reaction, Alongkorn Amonsin, Chailai Koowatananukul, Thanis Damrongwatanapokin, Somatat Wongsawang

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A DNA fingerprinting technique, repetitive sequence based polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR), was used to characterize 20 isolates of both pathogenic and nonpathogenic Leptospira spp. Rep-PCR differentiated 20 Leptospira isolates into 16 rep-PCR patterns with a high index of discrimination (D=0.963). The results of cluster analysis demonstrated that pathogenic and nonpathogenic Leptospira belonged to separate clusters with at least 60% similarity. Overall, the results of our studies indicated that rep-PCR is useful for fingerprinting Leptospira species. The technique is simple, rapid, inexpensive and may be used for strain tracking in molecular epidemiological investigations of Leptospirosis outbreaks in the future.

The Anatomical And Histological Features Of The Placenta In Eld's Deer (Cervus Eldi Siamensis), Adisorn Adirekthaworn, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong, Wimon Pothiwong, Pakorn Prachammuang

A placenta was recovered at post mortem from an eld's deer, Cervus eldi siamensis, for anatomical and histological study. Macroscopically, there were eight placentomes, elliptical and cup-like in shape, with an average dimension of 6.19, 4.87 and 3.41 cm. in length, width, and thickness. Branches of the umbilical vessels that connected the placentomes to each other and to the umbilical cord were markedly noticeable. The cross sectioned surface had a radiant appearance of interdigitating structures. The uterine caruncles and fetal cotyledons were convex and concave, respectively. Microscopically, chorionic villi were in contact with the maternal crypts by means of interdigitating. …

Real time B-mode ultrasound for ovarian examination in pigs has been used in many experimental studies. All were aimed at elucidating the relationship between the duration of oestrus, the time of ovulation, the time of insemination and fertility. This review describes the uses and benefits of real time B-mode ultrasound for ovulation monitoring and pregnancy diagnosis for fertility control in swine breeding herds. The reliability of diagnosis is very much dependent on the experience of the investigator and the type of ultrasound machine used. Safety Evaluation Of Trichlorfon Used At A Therapeutic Dose Level For Ectoparasitic Treatment By Studying Serum Cholinesterase Activity Measurements In Carp (Cyprinus Carpio), Rangsiwan Pet-In, Rujira Thumma, Ubonrat Nimittritip, Janenuj Wongtavatchai, Piyarat Chansiripornchai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The safety of trichlorfon at a therapeutic dose for ectoparasitic treatment in healthy carp (Cyprinus carpio) was evaluated by the measurement of serum cholinesterase (ChE) activity. Three groups of juvenile carp (70-80 g b.w., n =30 each) were bathed with 0.5 ppm trichlorfon 1, 2 or 3 times, respectively, at 5-day intervals. Serum ChE activity in each fish were compared pre and post-treatment. A significant post-treatment reduction of serum ChE activity (p < 0.05) was found in all groups, although they, resumed their pre-treatment levels 14 days after trichlorfon was withdrawn. All fish were clinically healthy throughout the experiment, suggesting, that the doses of trichlorfon applied in this study were safe.

A comparison of the efficacy of a Newcastle disease (ND), inactivated, experimental vaccine (NDIEV) and a ND, inactivated, commercial vaccine (NDICV) was under taken. Broiler chickens were divided into 5 groups of 112 birds each. 2,425 neoplasms from dogs in Bangkok were submitted to the Department of Pathology, Chulalongkorn University, from January 1982 to December 2000 (a 19-year period) and were retrospectively studied to survey the prevalence of the different types of tumours. Histopathological diagnosis was based on the World Health Organization (WHO, 1974) classification of tumours in domestic animals. A 4-year-old, thoroughbred mare showed clinical signs of back pain and weakness of both hindlimbs. Kissing- Spines-Syndrome (KSS) of the T14-16 dorsal spinous processes were diagnosed from clinical examination and radiography. The horse returned to training after three months and to racing in five months after paralesional betamethasone injections.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced expression of MAdCAM-1 (mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1) is associated with the onset and progression of inflammatory bowel disease. The clinical significance of elevated MAdCAM-1 expression is supported by studies showing that immunoneutralization of MAdCAM-1, or its ligands reduce inflammation and mucosal damage in models of colitis. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an endogenous anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory cytokine that has been shown to prevent inflammation and injury in several animal studies, however clinical IL-10 treatment remains insufficient because of difficulties in the route of IL-10 administration and its biological half-life. Substantially less development to the blastocyst stage occurs in vitro than in vivo and this may be due to deficiencies in oocyte competence. Although a large proportion of bovine oocytes undergo spontaneous nuclear maturation, less is known about requirements for proper cytoplasmic maturation. Commonly, supraphysiological concentrations of FSH and LH are added to maturation media to improve cumulus expansion, fertilization and embryonic development.
