After ocular herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection, the virus travels up axons and establishes a lifelong latent infection in neurons of the trigeminal ganglia. LAT (latency-associated transcript), the only known viral gene abundantly transcribed during HSV-1 neuronal latency, is required for high levels of reactivation. The LAT function responsible for this reactivation phenotype is not known. Recently, we showed that LAT can block programmed cell death (apoptosis) in neurons of the trigeminal ganglion in vivo and in tissue culture cells in vitro (G.-C. T-cell immunity is critical for survival of hosts infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Among the cells in the T-cell population, CD8⁺ T cells are considered the major effector cells against this parasite. It is believed that CD4⁺ T cells may be crucial for induction of the CD8⁺-T-cell response against T. gondii. In the present study, CD4^−/− mice were used to evaluate the role of conventional CD4⁺ T cells in the immune response against T. gondii infection. The purpose of a phase I trial in cancer is to determine the level (dose) of the treatment under study that has an acceptable level of adverse effects. Although substantial progress has recently been made in this area using parametric approaches, the method that is widely used is based on treating small cohorts of patients at escalating doses until the frequency of toxicities seen at a dose exceeds a predefined tolerable toxicity rate. Background: Previous research suggests that the presentation of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) may differ in women and men. No study has prospectively evaluated the role of a comprehensive set of typical and atypical symptoms and whether different symptoms on presentation predict ACS diagnosis in women and men. Methods and Results: We directly observed 246 women and 276 men seen in the emergency department with symptoms suggestive of ACS and documented their symptoms verbatim. This chapter describes the case of two adolescent girls who were living in foster care with their maternal aunt and her family, the Kraller family. The girls and their aunt and uncle participated in Project SAFE, a university-based program for sexually abused children and their nonoffending caregivers, which is described in detail in the Course of Treatment section. The Kraller family was referred to Project SAFE by the local Child Advocacy Center. This background paper reviews the two principal coding systems used to describe health services in the United States: ICD-9-CM and HCPCS, a combination of CPT-4 and national and local codes. It probes the relationships of these coding systems to payment policy, administrative simplification under HIPAA, and other concerns. The paper also addresses four coding issues: governance of CPT; adoption of ICD-10-CM; the appropriateness, accuracy, and responsiveness to change of the codes themselves; and the degree of documentation needed to monitor health services and determine payment.

This paper examines the increasing demand for long-term care services and the concurrent decrease in the supply of paid and unpaid caregivers. It considers workforce trends for paraprofessionals, such as certified nursing assistants, home health aides, and personal care attendants, as well as several public and private efforts to address staff shortages and quality-of-care. The paper explores the sociodemographic factors that have affected the demand for and supply of informal care provided by family and friends. It also reviewes policy proposals designed to provide support for family caregivers and/or to give choices to consumers.

Objectives: To determine whether hospital patients identified as Indigenous are less likely than other inpatients to have a principal procedure recorded, and the extent to which any disparity in procedure use can be explained by differences in patient, episode and hospital characteristics. Design: Retrospective analysis of routinely collected administrative data from the National Hospital Morbidity Database (NHMD). Setting: Australian public and private hospitals. Patients: All patients included in the NHMD whose episode type was recorded as acute and whose separation occurred between 1 July 1997 and 30 June 1998. The present invention is directed to methods of using pro-NAD agents capable of enhancing the dermal and epidermal skin cell NAD content. These pro-NAD agents may be administered topically, orally, or parenterally to enhance DNA repair and other protective responses to DNA damage. The invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising pro-NAD agents that effectively elevate intracellular NAD content. Finally, the invention relates to the method of using the pro-NAD agents to treat disorders such as sunburn and other skin deterioration that results from DNA damage in skin cells.

The isolation and characterization of cDNAs encoding poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG) enzymes and the amino acid sequences of PARGs from several species are described. PARG is involved in the cellular response to DNA damage and its proper function is associated with the body's response to neoplastic disorder inducing agents and oxidative stress. Expression vectors containing the cDNAs and cells transformed with the vectors are described. Probes and primers that hybridize with the cDNAs are described. Expression of the cDNA in E. coli results in an enzymatically active protein of about 111 kDa and an active fragment of about 59 kDa. Methods …

HIV-1HXB2 5′LTR region, most of BIVR29 gag-pol segment and HIV-1HXB2 pol IN-3′LTR region were respectively amplified. A chimeric clone, designated as pHBIV₃₇₅₃, was constructed by cloning three fragments sequentially into pUC18. MT4 cells were transfected with pHBIV₃₇₅₃. The replication and expressions of the chimeric virus (HBIV₃₇₅₃) were monitored by RT activity and IFA. The results firstly demonstrated that it is possible to generate a new type of the BIV/HIV-1 chimeric virus containing BIV gag-pol gene.

Phosphoglycan messengers (PGMs) which are carbohydrate derivatised phosphatidyl cyclitols are disclosed, together with the finding that these substances are biologically active, e.g. in lowering blood glucose levels. These compounds are distinct from GPI-anchors disclosed in the prior art as these GPI-anchors are protein linked and are not biologically active.

We discuss the use of a mock trial of the controversial Jack Kevorkian euthanasia case in an undergraduate psychology and law course. We provide an overview of the project, student feedback, and recommendations for improving the exercise. Based on feedback from students, we conclude that constructing a trial around a controversial topic with psychosocial issues as the foundation of a course can increase the utility of a mock trial and make the course a better learning experience.

In this paper, we have developed a hybrid expert system prototype used for supporting diagnosis of heart diseases. The system merges uncertainty management techniques and case-based reasoning. The system is able to give appropriate diagnosis for 4 heart diseases namely; mitral stenosis, left-sided heart failure, stable angina pectoris and essential hypertension with the corresponding certainty factor. The system has been implemented in visual prolog for windows and has trained set of 42 cases for Egyptian cardiac patients and has been tested by another 13 different cases.
