Current medical practice is largely disease and problem focused, concentrating on the diagnosis and treatment of anatomic or physiologic problems. This approach assumes that physiologic parameters accurately reflect the patient's status of health. It also assumes that, when a patient's disease is ameliorated, his or her quality of life will improve. Many health services researchers find these parameters to be imperfect determinates for good outcomes of patients' perceived health status. Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (Egfr) As A Prognostic Marker: An Immunohistochemical Study On 315 Consecutive Breast Carcinoma Patients, S. A. Aziz, Shahid Pervez, N. Kayani, M. H. Rahbar, S. Khan

Objective: To assess the independent and interdependent prognostic value of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in carcinoma of breast in female population. The Type I family of growth factor receptors includes epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR also known as EGFRI).

Methods: The expression of EGFR protein was analysed immunohistochemically on 315 tumour specimens of infiltrating ductal carcinoma of breast. These patients also had axillary lymph nodes sampling.

Results: Overexpression and/or amplification of EGFR was observed in 70 (22.00%) tumours. Eleven (16%) were grade I, 43 (61%) grade II and 16 (23%) grade Ill tumours. Axillary lymph node metastasis had significant …

Stature At Time Of Diagnosis Of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, John H. Diliberti, Koryn Carver, Elaine Parton, Joan P. Totka, Gail Mick, Kenneth Mccormick

Objective. To assess the stature of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus at diagnosis.

Methods. We collected data from 451 records of children who were examined in a pediatric diabetes clinic and used data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 10 522 children as control group. Analytical techniques included linear and logistic regression modeling. A semiquantitative meta-analysis evaluated 38 earlier publications that contain information on height at the onset of diabetes.

Results. Children < 1 year of age were shorter than their peers by 1 standard deviation, whereas those from 3 years to near puberty were taller by approximately 0.3 standard deviation. Adjusting for parental height caused this difference to disappear for the older children but not for the infants. The meta-analysis results paralleled these observations.

Conclusions. Taller children generally seem to experience increased risk for development of diabetes mellitus type 1, except perhaps during infancy or early adolescence. …

Indigenous communities in the United States have a wealth of cultural and social resources that can facilitate educational resilience among Native students. This article reviews the historical context, contemporary trends, and current challenges related to education of Indigenous students. The authors present an innovative middle school-to-high school-to-college bridge program as one example of many positive educational initiatives currently developing across the country.

Although many schools of nursing have been involved in some aspects of academic practice, the lack of common focus and direction has hampered concerted movement. Responding to high rates of suicide for American Indian youth, helping professionals often struggle to connect healing traditions from American Indian cultures to tools from European psychology. The differences between American Indian healing and European therapy can be vast. Preliminary evidence has associated testosterone and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) with breast cancer. Our objective was to determine whether a) testosterone levels in nipple aspirate fluid (NAF), serum, or breast tissue are associated with breast cancer; b) testosterone levels in serum are associated with levels in NAF; c) PSA in NAF, serum, or breast tissue is associated with breast cancer; and d) serum PSA is associated with NAF PSA levels. We obtained 342 NAF specimens from 171 women by means of a modified breast pump. Additionally, we collected 201 blood samples from 99 women and 51 tissue samples from 41 subjects …

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different concentrations of ethylene glycol on the normality and the in vitro maturation of pig oocytes, after ultra-rapid freezing on a microscope copper grid. Immature pig oocytes were exposed to different concentrations of ethylene glycol at levels of 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0 molar for 20 seconds, at room temperature (25 oC), laid on a microscope copper grid and then plunged directly to -196 oC where they were kept for 10 seconds. Two hundred and forty, 5 day-old broiler chicks (Shaver starbo) were divided into three groups of 80 birds. Birds in group 3 were orally intubated and given a single dose of sterile water, olive oil and 5 mg/kg of aflatoxin B1. Clinical signs, gross pathology, histochemistry and histoenzymatic studies of liver were observed for 10 days. Eight birds from each group were randomly selected, sacrificed and necropsied everyday. The aflatoxin B1 group (group 3) showed depression and a decrease in feed consumption and body weight, in comparison with groups 1 and 2. Fatty degeneration of the liver was clearly demonstrated …

Anatomical And Electrophysiological Analysis Of The Trigeminal Nerve In A Teleost Fish, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Lynne U. Sneddon

The trigeminal nerve in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, was examined for the presence of A-delta and C fibres. Sections of the three branches of the trigeminal nerve were found to comprise a range of fibre types including Adelta and C fibres. The size range of the cell bodies of the trigeminal ganglion reflected the fibre range since they correlated with the size range of axons in the nerve branches. Electrophysiological recordings of evoked activity from the ganglion confirmed the presence of these fibre types and the proportion of these mirrored the proportion of fibre types in the anatomical analyses. …
