Reflexology And Massage In The Treatment Of Type Ii Diabetic Neuropathy, Destini Kulik

This study examined Neuro-Reflex Therapy, a type of reflexology, and effleurage massage for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy in men and women 40-73 years old with Type II diabetes. Participants were physician-referred to an alternative medicine clinic and were randomly assigned to Neuro-Reflex Therapy, effleurage massage, or a wait-list control group. The treatment groups received 12 individual 30 min sessions scheduled once a week for 12 weeks, and the control group received treatment after the study was completed. Scoring Sentences Developmentally: An Analog Of Developmental Sentence Scoring, Amy Seal

A variety of tools have been developed to assist in the quantification and analysis of naturalistic language samples. In recent years, computer technology has been employed in language sample analysis. This study compares a new automated index, Scoring Sentences Developmentally (SSD), to two existing measures. Eighty samples from three corpora were manually analyzed using DSS and MLU and the processed by the automated software. Results show all three indices to be highly correlated, with correlations ranging from .62 to .98. The high correlations among scores support further investigation of the psychometric characteristics of the SSD software to determine its clinical …

Photobacterium damselae subspecies piscicida, previously known as Pasteurella piscicida, is an important pathogen of hybrid striped bass and many fish species cultured in brackish water in the United States, Japan, Europe, and the Mediterranean. The purpose of this study is to investigate virulence mechanisms that contribute to the pathogenesis of this organism. The ability of P. damselae to survive/replicate within hybrid striped bass macrophages was evaluated with an in vitro killing assay. Ehrlichia canis is the etiologic agent of “tropical canine pancytopenia”, or canine ehrlichiosis. The impetus for this research was to overcome the lack of any reliable means of elucidating the genetic profiles of these illusive and historically difficult to manipulate organisms. The use of a broad-host range plasmid greatly facilitated the determination of an electro-transformation protocol. The transforming plasmid possesses a chloramphenicol antibiotic resistance gene marker (chloramphenicol acetyltransferase [CAT] gene), and a visual reporter gene marker, the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) gene. Glycohydrolases are a group of enzymes contained predominantly within lysosomes, which are released during Kupffer cell activation or death. One of these, beta-galactosidase, has been proposed as a marker of ischemia-reperfusion injury in the liver because Kupffer cell activation represents a primary event in the injurious reperfusion cascade. Visual and metric analysis both provide accepted methods for sex determination in humans. Visual ascertainment uses differing morphological traits in males and females to establish sex. Researchers have continually sought accurate methods of sexing long bones when skulls or pelves are absent or fragmented. These long bone elements may not have sexually distinct characteristics, but tend to survive in the field quite well.

In this study, the thyroid hormone levels in sheep experimentally treated with selenium were investigated. Twelve Akkaraman sheep were used in the investigation. Selenium was given intramuscularly at doses of 0.1 (Group 1) and 0.4 mg/kg (Group 2). The blood samples were taken from the jugular vein at 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 96 and 144 hours after the administration. Serum triiodotyronine (T3), thyroxin (T4), free triiodotironine (fT3) and free thyroxin (fT4) levels were determined using a hormone autoanalyzer. In this research, the colourfullness and the relationships between colourfullness and physical characteristics in the coarse and down fibres obtained from hair goats raised in the provinces of Antalya, Artvin, Diyarbakır, İzmir, Kars and Konya in Turkey were studied. This study was carried out to investigate the changes occurring in the levels of serum thyroid hormone in rams given indomethacin, furosemide and PGF2\alpha. In the study, 20 Akkaraman rams, approximately 2 years old were used. Indomethacin (3.0 mg/kg), furosemide (2.0 mg/kg) and PGF2\alpha (0.1 mg/kg) were intramuscularly given to the animals in one dose and repeated for four consecutive days. This study was carried out on cattle to detect the seroprevalence of babesiosis around Kayseri between July 1997 and January 1999. During this period a total of 191 cattle were examined for the Babesia species. Blood samples were collected from the cattle to obtain sera. The applicability of the immunoperoxidase (IP) technique in unfixed-fresh tracheal organ cultures (TOCs) was investigated for rapid detection of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). For this purpose, TOCs prepared from one-day-old SPF chicks were inoculated with IBV M41 strain in serial dilutions. IBV antigen detected by IP technique in TOCs 18 h postinoculation. IP staining was observed before siliostasis in all dilutions. The IP technique was also applied to detect IBV antigen in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of TOCs inoculated with IBV M41 strain. Viral antigen was also detected in these sections. In this study we examined factors affecting the colonization of campylobacters in chick intestines, colonization times and elicited immune responses. In chicks, infected orally by minimal infective dose _{100} (MID_{100}), colonization in the intestines was observed to reach 100% during the 3-week period following C. jejuni and C. coli inoculation. Due to the recent increasing mortality rates in 1- to 4-month-old Thoroughbred foals with Rhodococcus equi infection in Turkey, serum samples from 454 foals between 30 and 60 days on studfarms of the Marmara Region, where the Thoroughbred foal population is concentrated, were investigated by ELISA for early diagnosis of the infection. The Tween 20-extracted antigen of the R. equi ATCC 6939 strain was used in the ELISA. Two hundred and nine (46%) of the 454 foals were found to be ELISA-positive. The purpose of this study was to isolate Campylobacter species from the intestines and livers of chicken and to identify Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni by both conventional methods and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Four specific primers derived from the ceuE gene present in the genomes of C. coli and C. jejuni were used for PCR identification.
