Gene therapy, being a novel treatment for many diseases, is readily applicable for the treatment of cancer patients. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. There are many clinical protocols for the treatment of breast cancer, and gene therapy is now being considered within current protocols. This review will focus on the basic concepts of cancer gene therapy strategies (suicide gene, tumor suppressor gene, anti-angiogenesis, immunotherapy, oncolytic viruses and ribozyme/antisense targeting) and current approaches for breast cancer gene therapies.

The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of anomalous aortic origins of coronary arteries, to classify these anomalies and to define their consequences. Therefore, 5000 coronary artery angiograms were analysed. Twenty-five (0.5%) coronary arteries with anomalous origins were found, and these anomalies were classified in four main groups. Origin of the circumflex artery from the right side was the most frequent anomaly (12 cases). In 8 cases the right coronary artery originated from the left side, in 3 cases the left coronary artery originated from the right side and finally we found 2 left anterior descending arteries …

Antiplatelet therapy reduces the risk of subsequent ischemic events in patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In this respect, the multi-agent therapy to be used along with aspirin remains to be determined. In this study, ticlopidine was tried in AMI for its potential additive effects over aspirin. Ninety patients with similar clinical characteristics were involved and were followed up for 3 and 6 months. All patients were assigned to receive ticlopidine plus aspirin or aspirin alone. This study was carried out to assess the behaviours and attitudes of medical students towards smoking and perceptions of their future role in this matter as doctors. For this purpose, a questionnaire was given to 215 medical students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine of Süleyman Demirel University in Isparta, Turkey, during the 2000-2001 session. Of the students, 106 (49.3%) had never smoked and 17 (7.9%) were former smokers. Of the 92 (42.8%) students who had smoked for at least six months in their lifetime, 11 (12.0%) were ex-smokers. In addition to the familiar acute inflammation of the appendix, chronic inflammation has long been a controversial disease entity. However, some recent reports announced that chronic recurrent appendicitis is by no means an established disease of the appendix. Therefore, we reviewed our appendectomies in children to determine the underestimated cases of chronic recurrent appendicitis and discuss this disease entity in children. Berberine originates from a Chinese herbal medicine and possesses a wide variety of anti-cancer activities. In this study, the killing effect of berberine on nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells (NPC/HK1) was investigated. The trypan blue exclusion assay was used to assess the cytotoxic effect of berberine in this cell line. Berberine, at 5-200 µM, induced cell death in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment of cells with 200 µM berberine for 5 h yielded a lethal dose of 50% (LD50). Objective: The purpose of this study was to estimate the level of patient satisfaction with health center services and related factors. Methods: This study was performed on eight randomly selected health centers in urban areas of Ankara and Konya by interviewing patients who were about to go home after examination. The questionnaire consisted of demographic data and a four-point rating scale of 13 items measuring the satisfaction of outpatients. The chi-square test was used to assess differences in proportions. Lyme disease (LD), the most commonly reported arthropod-associated illness in the U.S., is a multi-system tick-borne illness caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. In the eastern U.S. the agent is transmitted by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapuiaris, and primarily maintained in nature by rodent reservoirs. Although the majority of human cases has been concentrated in the northeastern U.S., hundreds have also been reported in southern states. A cross-sectional study on fasting serum and 24-hour urine samples were used to determine whether biochemical markers of bone turnover, resorption and formation, differed in a group of 50 healthy premenopausal Caucasian women eating vegan, lactoovovegetarian(LOV) and omnivorous diets.

The women, ages 20-42, had participated in a study of bone mineral density(BMD). The three groups were comparable in mean age, BMI, calorie intake, calories spent in exercise, kcal/kg body weight, protein/day, protein/kg body weight and urinary creatinine.

Most analyses of food-sharing behavior invoke complex explanations such as indirect and delayed benefits for sharing via kin selection and reciprocal altruism. However, food sharing can be a more general phenomenon accounted for by more parsimonious, mutualistic explanations. We propose a game theoretical model of a general sharing situation in which food owners share because it is in their own self-interest—they avoid high costs associated with beggar harassment. Consistency of measures of a prosocial personality and prosocial moral judgment over time, and the interrelations among them, were examined. Participants’ and friends’ reports of prosocial characteristics were obtained at ages 21– 22, 23–24, and 25–26 years. In addition, participants’ prosocial judgment was assessed with interviews and with an objective measure of prosocial moral reasoning at several ages. Reports of prosocial behavior and empathy-related responding in childhood and observations of prosocial behavior in preschool also were obtained. There was interindividual consistency in prosocial dispositions, and prosocial dispositions in adulthood related to empathy/sympathy and prosocial behavior at much younger ages. Interview …

Central serotonin dysfunction appears to be related to a subtype of alcoholism with antisocial impulsive features (type II; antisocial alcoholism). The serotonergic deficit may be associated with greater impulsivity, which in turn facilitates both alcohol dependence and antisocial behavior. The present study tested association of antisocial impulsive alcoholism with candidate genes related to serotonergic neurotransmission, using families. This study proposes to identify the acceptance of relatives, by blood or by marriage, working together in NCAA Division II colleges in the southeastern United States. To explore the contextual factors influencing health-seeking behavior of women in Karachi regarding reproductive tract infections, 18 women with reproductive tract infections from different clinics and community settings were identified and in-depth interviews were conducted. Physicians in our study diagnosed a woman to have lower reproductive tract infection if she complained of malodorous vaginal discharge with or without perineal itching; and to have pelvic inflammatory disease or upper reproductive tract infection if she had any two of the following complaints: malodorous vaginal discharge, menstrual irregularities, lower abdominal pain or dyspareunia. The effect of Quartermate pre-milking teat sanitation on milk quality was investigated in twelve dairy herds over a period of eight weeks. Pre-milking teat sanitation was carried out on all cows for six weeks on each of six farms and mesophile and thermophile bacteria counts of raw milks were compared before the milk line (“cluster” samples), and at various points within milking plants. Rates of mastitis, vat milk iodide levels and specific bacteria were also monitored.
