Fine Structural Demonstration Of Anionic Sites On Streptococcal And Staphylococcal Envelopes By Cationic Dyes, Yosun Mater, Sabi̇re Karaçali

Anionic sites on bacterial envelopes of Streptococcus \beta-haemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 P were investigated on materials fixed with Karnovsky fixative containing the cationic dyes ruthenium red (RR) or alcian blue (AB). Electron dense granules and short fibrils were found to be irregularly distributed around the cells on the glycocalyces of both genera. An electron dense stained reaction with RR or AB on the cell membrane and glycocalyx indicates the presence of rich anionic sites on these structures. Electron microscopic observations demonstrate that anionic sites in the glycocalyx are responsible for the adherence phenomenon during the formation of microcolonies. …

Caudate hemorrhage is a rare stroke syndrome that accounts for only 3-7% of all primary intracerebral hematomas. In this study, we evaluated eight patients with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage for their clinical presentation and neurological findings. Material and methods: Eight patients, who were admitted to our department with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage, were evaluated for their clinical presentation and present risk factor findings on neurological examination and prognosis. Cast alloys used in dentistry come into close and prolonged contact with the gingiva and the oral mucosa, and certain alloys have been claimed to cause inflammation of gingival and periodontal tissues. Toluene is a widely used solvent in different industrial areas and has a depressant effect on the central nervous system. In medicolegal cases, for the possible influence of toluene on actions or conditions prior to death, a reliable indicator of exposure must be precisely investigated. We developed an appropriate method for toluene analysis and investigate the blood-urine toluene levels and urinary ortho-cresol levels in toluene-exposed workers. The thalamus is one of the most vulnerable areas for intracerebral hemorrhages. In this study, we investigated the parameters of thalamic hemorrhage such as risk factors, initial complaints, neurologic findings and the prognostic effects of the presence or absence of ventricular penetration, as well as the volume and size of hematoma. A total of 57 patients with thalamic hemorrhage, whose diagnosis was confirmed by cranial computerized tomography, were evaluated. Many risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) have been reported to date. Recently, it has been shown that elevations in homocysteine (Hcy) levels may contribute to the development of coronary heart diseases. In this study, our aim was to determine the relation of Hcy levels and other risk factors in CHD. Serum Hcy, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL levels were measured in 51 male patients, diagnosed with CHD with negative T elevations in electrocardiograms, and in 20 healthy males. Aim: To investigate the effects of oral L-glutamine, insulin and laxative on the severity of acute pancreatitis. Materials and Methods: Forty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups. Experimental pancreatitis was induced by ligating the main biliopancreatic duct. All groups were given standard rat pellets and tap water. In addition Group II was given 15 mg/kg/day of L-glutamine via a catheter enterally, Group III was given a 3 ml/day fleet enema via a catheter enterally, and Group IV was given 3 IU/kg/day of NPH insulin via a catheter enterally. This qualitative study into the effective use of fear arousal in social marketing advertising, focused on exploring gender differences in smokers' attitudes towards threats in anti-smoking messages in the 40 to 50 year old age group. This age group of smokers has received relatively little attention in the fear arousal literature to date, presumably because their 'hard core' attitudes are perceived as difficult to change by social marketing and medical practitioners. This study was concerned with acute responses to exercise in people over the age of 50 (N = 80). In particular the relationship between Self-efficacy and perceived exertion during exercise at workloads (a) based on a target heart rate (prescribed intensities) and (b) based on participant preference (preferred intensities) were observed. Perceptual (perceived exertion), Self-efficacy and heart rate responses of low active older participants engaged in either walking or cycle ergometer exercise at preferred and prescribed intensities were also reported. Objective: To assess the clinical presentation of genital tuberculosis and to study various modes of diagnosis and treatment.SETTING: The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Karachi.
Method: A retrospective case review of all index female cases of genital tuberculosis, admitted to AKUH over twelve years of period.
Result: A total of 40 cases of genital tuberculosis were reported during this time period. Majority of cases were between 25-45 years. The commonest presenting symptoms were infertility (42.5%) and abdominal pain (42%). Others included fever, ascites, irregular vaginal bleeding, oligomenorrhea, chest pain and pain in the flanks. Objective: To pilot test an inexpensive, home-based water decontamination and storage system in a low-income neighborhood of Karachi.Methods: Fifty households received a 20-L plastic water storage vessel with a high-quality spout and a regular supply of diluted hypochlorite solution. Twenty-five control households were recruited. Water samples were collected at baseline and during unannounced follow-up visits 1, 3, 6, and 10 weeks later.Results: Baseline drinking water samples among intervention households were contaminated with a mean 9397 colony-forming units (cfu)/100 mL of thermotolerant coliforms compared with a mean 10,990 cfu/100 mL from controls. External stimulus/loading initiates adaptations within skeletal muscle. Whilst performing flying manoeuvres under +Gz it has been previously found that the cervical area has the highest loading. The purpose of this study was to examine cervical muscle response to moderate +Gz force (+4-6Gz) loading generated during RAAF pilot training. Cervical muscle strength was monitored in nine RAAF pilots completing an eight-month flight training course and ten controls matched for gender, age, height and weight. Stallard (1998, Biometrics54, 279–294) recently used Bayesian decision theory for sample-size determination in phase II trials. His design maximizes the expected financial gains in the development of a new treatment. However, it results in a very high probability (0.65) of recommending an ineffective treatment for phase III testing. On the other hand, the expected gain using his design is more than 10 times that of a design that tightly controls the false positive error (Thall and Simon, 1994, Biometrics50, 337–349). Stallard's design maximizes the expected gain per phase II trial, but it does not maximize the rate of gain or …

The purpose or this study was to test the suitability or selected assistance exercises to strengthen the low back for the Olympic lilts in elite weightlifters. Four subjects were filmed by a five-camera Motion Analysis system operating at 120Hz. The subjects completed both or the Olympic lifts (Snatch and Clean) at a near one repetition maximum and four assistance exercises (Bent-over Row, Clean Pull Deadlift, Romanian Deadlift, and Good Morning) at an intensity typically performed at a routine training session. The use of V02MAX as a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness is widespread throughout the fields of exercise physiology, physiology and medicine. VO2MAX is described as the maximal rate of oxygen consumption during increasing exercise intensities and is defined by a plateau or levelling off of oxygen consumption (VO2). Taylor et al. The home represents a relatively new arena for practice for most service providers, especially those working with families of persons with dementia. This article describes four key factors to consider when working with caregivers of persons with dementia in their homes. This case report describes the use of three-dimensional gait analysis to identify kinematic changes following the Adeli suit treatment. The suit's original design was to decrease the effects of weightlessness in space but has been modified to become the primary modality for the Adeli treatment used to treat cerebral palsy. Data were quantitatively produced by three-dimensional gait analysis before and after treatment were used to identity any changes in gait. Following the Adeli treatment, instrumented gait analysis showed that no clinically significant changes in four critical events of gait following the Adeli treatment occurred.

This study was a secondary analysis of data from a national survey of 135 high schools throughout the nation, including both rural and urban settings. A sample of 14,056 twelfth grade students participated in the survey. This study explored the relationships between religious attendance, perceived importance of religion, and smoking and consumption of alcohol in adolescents. Very little research was found on the relationship between religion and adolescent health, indicating a need for more investigations. This study found that the greater number of times an individual attended religious services the less they reported engaging in smoking and drinking. Future intention …

This qualitative explored some of the concepts under which physical therapists in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area operate when treating patients with fibromyalgia syndrome. Four physical therapists with at least two years’ experience working in local pain clinics were interviewed. The data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed into themes.
