In order to understand the prevalence of limitation in activities of daily living in elderly people and the relationship between limitation in activities of daily living and the cardiovascular risk factors among elderly people, we conducted a cross-sectional study in Chung-Shing-Shin-Tseun community of Taiwan in May 1998. All of individuals aged 65 and over were collected. A total of 1093 persons, out of a 1774 registered residents, finished questionnaires. The response rate was 61.6%. However, only 586 respondents had blood tests and completed questionnaires. Analysis in this study was based on these 586 subjects. Our results showed that 66.2% were …

The daily activities of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), especially those of quadriplegics or non-ambulatory SCI patients, are usually inadequate to maintain physical fitness. Lack of participation in a regular activity program may result in a debilitative cycle. Therefore, cardiopulmonary problems rank high in these patients during the acute stage and also the later years.The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between neurological impairment, cardiopulmonary function, upper limbs muscle strength and functional capacity in the patients. Ultrasonographic Pictures Of The Babies Who Were Clinically Diagnosed As Postural Wry Neck, Yi-Pin Chiang, Baii-Jia Yang

One hundred and thirty-four babies who were clinically diagnosed with postural wry neck were enrolled in this study. All of them received sonographic examination of both sternocleidomastoid muscles with a 7.5 MHz linear array transducer connected to the Acuson 128 10M ultrasonographic machine. Three (2.2%) of the 134 babies were noted to have echogenic changes in one of their sternocleidomastoid muscles, and were diagnosed as having muscular type torticollis. Among the other 131 babies, 116(88.6%) babies showed no difference between bilateral SCM muscles. The direction of the head tilt was not related to the thickness of the muscle, which indicated …

Integrated Rehabilitation Information System (IRIS) was designed for medical administration in the Department of Rehabilitation at a medical center in Taiwan. Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable diseases in the United States. Smoking accounts for more than 400,000 deaths yearly and 30% of all cancer deaths. Primary care physicians have access to 70% of smokers, approximately 60% of whom are perceived to be in excellent health. Recent advances in the pharmacotherapy of nicotine addiction, including nicotine nasal spray, nicotine inhaler, bupropion hydrochloride, and over-the-counter transdermal nicotine patches, have increased the treatment options physicians can offer to smokers. Physicians, especially thosein primary care specialties, should familiarize themselves with these products to improve efforts to help their patients stop smoking. …

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, lower rural reimbursements for the same services provided in urban areas contributed to a substantial decline in the number of rural hospitals and health care providers. Periprosthetic Humeral Shaft Fracture Caused By Stretching Exercises After Shoulder Hemiarthroplasty: A Casereport, Han-Jay Chiu, Yung-Ching Lin, Zong-Jing Wang

Periprosthetic humeral fractures constituted only 2 % of all the complications during or after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty or total shoulder arthroplasty. Most of the fractures occurred intraoperatively. Postoperative fractures were caused by falls or traffic accidents. To our knowledge, they have never been caused by stretching exercises after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty. We present a 57-year-old female patient who had a periprosthetic humeral shaft spiral fracture caused by stretching exercises after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty because of proximal humeral fracture. The fracture was close reduced and fixed with a sugar-tong splint. Three months later, the fracture successfully healed with good alignment. Possible …

The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of violence prevention programs on the attitudes toward guns and violence among students in grades three through seven. This study represents an attempt to prove that third through sixth grade students who receive anger control training and seventh grade students who receive conflict resolution training will show a significantly lower attraction towards guns and violence than students receiving no such training. By understanding interrelation between adolescents' attitudes towards guns and violence and their psychosocial functioning, the public can seek out ways of preventing violence. The Entrapment Syndrome Of The Intermediate Dorsal Cutaneous Branch Of The Superficial Peroneal Nerve：A Casereport, Hui-Wen Chen, Chein-Wei Chang, Ssu-Yuan Chen

The entrapment syndrome of the intermediate dorsal cutaneous branch of the superficial peroneal nerve is rarely reported. Here we reported a 17-year-old male patient, who suffered from left dorso-lateral foot numbness after prolonged local compression of left lateral foot. The electrophysiological studies of the left intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve, 10 days after onset of symptoms, revealed normal sensory nerve conduction velocity with significantly reduced amplitude of nerve action potential. These findings were compatible with the diagnosis of entrapment syndrome of left intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve. Tuberculosis (Tb) caused by Mycobacterium bovis is a worldwide threat to livestock and humans. One control strategy is to breed livestock that are more resistant to Mycobacterium bovis. In a 3-year heritability study 6 farmed red deer stags were selected from 39 on the basis of their differing responses to experimental challenge via the tonsillar sac with approximately 500 CFU of M. bovis. Two stags remained uninfected, two were moderately affected, and two developed serious spreading Tb. Seventy offspring, bred from these six stags by artificial insemination using stored semen, were similarly challenged with M. bovis …

Great strides have been made in controlling the progression of breast cancer, but medical professionals continue to rely primarily upon traditional mammography for early detection. Enhancing breast cancer detection capabilities - and thus reducing tumor detection time - should result in a reduction in mortality rates. The detection capabilities of mammography may be enhanced through improved modeling and visualization techniques. This thesis is an extension of initial research conducted at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Accuracy Of Zerobase™ Growth Prediction Of A Burlington Sample, Anitha Nair

The accuracy of ZeroBase™ orthodontic software program was tested using a sample of 14 male and 14 female untreated subjects classified as skeletal Class II pattern by the Burlington growth center. Growth predictions were carried out by ZeroBaseTM from ages 6,9,12,14,16 in males and 6,9,12 and 14 in females. The mean computer predicted value was compared with the mean radiographic value to test the accuracy of the predictions. Predictions from age 14 were the most accurate (within one standard deviation), whereas the predictions from age 6 were the least accurate.
