Cytokines And The Anorexia Of Infection: Potential Mechanisms And Treatments, Donna O. Mccarthy

Anorexia during infection is thought to be mediated by immunoregulatory cytokines such as interleukins 1 and 6 and tumor necrosis factor. This article reviews the potential mechanisms of action by which these cytokines are thought to suppress food intake during infection and examines the proposition that blocking of cytokine activity might be one approach to improving food intake of the infected host.

Reed offers advice on how to manage and prevent pain that exists in a limb that doesn't. More than 70 percent of amputees suffer from stump and phantom limb pain years after amputation.

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy At The Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi, S. C. Patel, J. R. Bhatt

Objective: To evaluate our experience of laparoscopic cholecystectomies at the Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi over a three-year period from the inception of the technique, and to assess its value and advantages to the patients.

Design: A prospective case series study.

Setting: The Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi.

Patients: One hundred and thirty five cases operated from February 1996 to April 1999. All patients were subjected to the American method of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, which is described in detail in this paper.

Main outcome measures: Clinical presentation, age and sex demographics, average hospital stay, intraoperative and postoperative complications and outcome.

Activation of volume-regulated anion current (VRAC) plays a key role in the maintenance of cellular volume homeostasis. The mechanisms, however, that regulate VRAC activity are not fully understood. We have examined whether VRAC activation is modulated by the cholesterol content of the membrane bilayer. The cholesterol content of bovine aortic endothelial cells was increased by two independent methods: (a) exposure to a methyl-beta-cyclodextrin saturated with cholesterol, or (b) exposure to cholesterol-enriched lipid dispersions. Enrichment of bovine aortic endothelial cells with cholesterol resulted in a suppression of VRAC activation in response to a mild osmotic gradient, but not to a strong …

The effectiveness of Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT) in the treatment of substance-abusing males has been demonstrated (Fals-Stewart, Birchler, 8 O'Farrell, 1996). However, research on the effectiveness of BCT in substance-abusing females has remained unexamined. It was hypothesized that BCT would improve posttreatment results of substance abuse treatment, both in terms of drug use and relationship satisfaction.

Married or cohabitating female substance-abusing patients (N=60) who were entering an outpatient treatment program were randomly assigned to one of two equally intensive treatment conditions. Human T-cell leukemia virus 1 (HTLV-1) is a type C human retrovirus which has been the causative agent of Adult T-cell leukemia. Replication of the retrovirus; requires a reverse transcriptase which converts the retroviral RNA into DNA which is later incorporated into the host's genome. Very little is known about the reverse transcriptase of HTLV-1. Researchers have attempted to purify HTLV-1 RT by isolating the enzyme from human cell lines. Because large amounts of protein could not be produced by this isolation method, the reverse transcriptase cannot be fully characterized. Nursing Homes To Medicare Waiver Programs In Vermont, Joseph Murray

This research examines the differences between nursing home residents and those who were able to leave nursing homes with the help of the Medicaid Waiver Program in Vermont. Ninety individuals who reentered the community with the aid of such waivers were compared with a random sample of nursing home residents through the use of the Nursing Home Minimum Data Set. The researchers found divergence in four key areas: cognition, continence, treatment categories, and desire to return to the community. Typically, those who left nursing homes for the community were cognitively intact, had moderate continence, received rehabilitative or clinically complex treatments, …

The author became interested in spirituality and rehabilitation during her summer 1999 employment at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institute-Graterford and as a legal intern in the law firm of Woody and Falkenbach, which specializes in criminal defense work, during the summers of 1991 to 1998. The article focuses on the role of spirituality in rehabilitation processes in correctional settings. It pays special attention to the sources offaith and inner strength, the nature of spiritual guidance, the roles of values, beliefs, and moral commitments, and the effects of cultural, social, political, and economic forces.

Vam2p/Vps41p is known to be required for transport vesicles with vacuolar cargo to bud from the Golgi. Like other VAM-encoded proteins, which are needed for homotypic vacuole fusion, we now report that Vam2p and its associated protein Vam6p/Vps39p are needed on each vacuole partner for homotypic fusion. In vitro vacuole fusion occurs in successive steps of priming, docking, and membrane fusion. While priming does not require Vam2p or Vam6p, the functions of these two proteins cannot be fulfilled until priming has occurred, and each is required for the docking reaction which culminates in trans-SNARE pairing. The major target tissues for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection are B lymphocytes and epithelial cells of the oropharyngeal zone. The product of the EBV BZLF1 early gene, EB1, a member of the basic leucine-zipper family of transcription factors, interacts with both viral and cellular promoters and transcription factors, modulating the reactivation of latent EBV infection. Here, we characterize a novel cellular protein interacting with the basic domains of EB1 and c-Jun, and competing of their binding to the AP1 consensus site. This study presents evidence that phosphoinositide (PI) 3-kinase is involved in T cell Ca²⁺ signaling via a phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate PI(3,4,5)P₃-sensitive Ca²⁺entry pathway. First, exogenous PI(3,4,5)P₃ at concentrations close to its physiological levels induces Ca²⁺ influx in T cells, whereas PI(3,4)P₂, PI(4,5)P₂, and PI(3)P have no effect on [Ca²⁺]_i. This Ca²⁺ entry mechanism is cell type-specific as B cells and a number of cell lines examined do not respond to PI(3,4,5)P₃ stimulation. This study explores the relationship among young age at diagnosis, family history, BRCA1/2 status, and ipsilateral breast tumor relapse (IBTR) in conservatively treated breast cancer patients. First, age was examined as a prognostic factor for IBTR using clinical information from 984 patients in a computerized database. Second, 52 case patients who had experienced an IBTR were matched to 52 control patients from the database to determine if IBTR was associated with family history. Articular cartilage is a highly compressive load-bearing tissue by virtue of the functional interplay between a 3-dimensional (3-D) structure of collagen fibrils and the entrapped water-swollen proteoglycan macromolecules. Any loss of interconnectivity in the collagen network that might reduce the constraints on the swelling tendency of the proteoglycan domain will lead to swelling and low matrix stiffness. The 3-D fibrillar architecture of the cartilage matrix strongly influences its stiffness and therefore its ability to maintain a sufficient hydrated thickness under load.One of the pathologies of osteoarthritis is softening and swelling of the articular cartilage.
