Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of Mexican American older adults with type 2, non-insulin dependent diabetes. Research design and results: A phenomenological research approach was used when interviewing a sample of ten English speaking Mexican American older adults in Santa Clara County, California. Three collective themes were identified: Emotions prevalent in living with diabetes, diabetes' impact on life, and cultural factors affecting diabetes self care. Discussion/conclusions/implications: A duality of thoughts and experiences in living with diabetes, and the strong influence of culture and its beliefs characterize the life-world of Mexican American non-insulin dependent …

This research study used a pre-test and post-test design to determine if a nursing educational intervention would reduce the potential for falls among the community dwelling elderly. The participants (N=15) were: (a) age 65 or older, (b) mentally competent, (c) predisposed to falls, and (d) living independently. Four instruments were utilized to collect data: (a) the Folstein mini-mental state examination (MMSE), (b) a fall predisposition scale, (c) a home assessment checklist (Tideikaar, 1987), and (d) interview questions. Approval for use of all or any part of the original questionnaire was obtained from the authors. Objective: To discover the attitudes, knowledge, and practice strategies related to complementary therapy by nurse practitioners in the state of California. Conclusion: Overall nurse practitioners view the combination of complementary therapies and allopathic medicine as beneficial to positive outcomes for their clients. Little is known about health care beliefs and practices among Vietnamese elderly persons living in the United States. In general, studies of patient compliance with medical advice consistently demonstrate a high level of noncompliance. Not following recommendations can have serious negative consequences in the management of disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate compliance among a group of elderly Vietnamese clients with the plan given to them by their physicians for control of hypertension. Laminitis, also known as founder, is one of the most devastating and crippling conditions affecting horses throughout the world today. Traditionally defined as the inflammation of the laminae within the hoof, laminitis actually presents itself as a complicated, multi-system disease, that, through a series of interrelated events, leads to a characteristic lameness. This lameness has serious economic and humane consequences because affected horses are often seen in pain, and frequently must be destroyed due to permanent damages within the hoof.

A non-experimental design was used to examine the relationship between health attitudes, beliefs, locus of control and the use of breast cancer screening modalities in elderly Hispanic women in this pilot study. Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality and the Health Belief Model were the supporting theoretical frameworks. Research was conducted at the Amigos del Valle senior centers in Hidalgo County and included 52 English-speaking elderly Hispanic volunteer participants. Objective: To observe the spectrum of non-Hodkin’s lymphomas involving the central nervous system including morphological subtypes and immunophenotypic status.

Setting: Retrospective analysis of eleven years (1986 to 1996) data from surgical pathology files of Department of Pathology.

Results: orty-three cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas were diagnosed during the period of eleven years (from 1986 to 1996), all of which were diffuse types. A total of 1177 Central Nervous CNS biopsies were examined, out of which 937 cases were diagnosed as CNS neoplasms, the remaining were non-neoplastic in nature. Among 937 CNS neoplasms, 43 cases (4.6%) were reported as non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. As …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการปรับตัว ภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ ความสัมพันธ์ ระหว่างปัจจัยส่วนบุคคล การจัดการความปลอดภัยในการทำงานของหัวหน้างานกับการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้าย ของพยาบาลวิชาชีพหน่วยงานอุบัติเหตุและฉุกเฉิน โรงพยาบาลศูนย์ รวมทั้งศึกษาตัวแปรที่สามารถพยากรณ์ การปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ กลุ่มตัวอย่างคือ พยาบาลวิชาชีพหน่วยงานอุบัติเหตุและ ฉุกเฉินโรงพยาบาลศูนย์ จำนวน 210 คน ซึ่งได้จากการสุ่มแบบง่าย เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยเป็นแบบสอบถาม การจัดการความปลอดภัยในการทำงานของหัวหน้างาน และแบบสอบถามการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้าย ของพยาบาลวิชาชีพที่ผู้วิจัยสร้างขึ้น ซึ่งตรวจสอบความตรงตามเนื้อหาแล้ว และมีค่าความเที่ยงเท่ากับ .95 และ.94 ตามลำดับ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยหาค่าเฉลี่ยค่าสัมประสิทธิ์การจรณ์และทดสอบทางสถิติ โดยการ ทดสอบไคสแควร์ และวิเคราะห์การถดถอยพหุคูณ แบบเพิ่มตัวแปรเป็นขั้นตอน \nผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ดังนี้ \n1. ค่าเฉลี่ยการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ หน่วยงานอุบัติเหตุและฉุกเฉิน โรงพยาบาลศูนย์ โดยรวมอยู่ในระดับดี เมื่อพิจารณารายด้าน พบว่าการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของ พยาบาลวิชาชีพด้านการทำหน้าที่ในสังคม ด้านขวัญกำลังใจ และด้านภาวะสุขภาพ อยู่ในระดับดี \n2. การอบรมการป้องกันตัวและการจัดการความปลอดภัยในการทํางานของหัวหน้างาน มีความสัมพันธ์ กับการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ 05 \n3. ตัวแปรที่พยากรณ์การปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทําร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ หน่วยงานอุบัติเหตุ และฉุกเฉิน โรงพยาบาลศูนย์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 คือ การจัดการความปลอดภัยในการ ทำงานของหัวหน้างาน สามารถพยากรณ์การปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทําร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพได้ร้อยละ 29.9 (R2 = .299) \nได้สมการพยากรณ์ในรูปคะแนนมาตรฐาน ดังนี้ \nการปรับตัวภายหลังถูกทำร้ายของพยาบาลวิชาชีพ = .546 การจัดการความปลอดภัยในการทำงานของหัวหน้างาน

Relationship Between Scholastic And Health Behaviors And Reading Level In Adolescent Females, Steven C. Matson, Kristin Haglund

This was a study of 102 adolescent females, 12-20 years of age, presenting to a central city clinic for medical care. Participants completed an oral questionnaire that included demographics, and questions regarding scholastic history, sexual behavior, and substance use. Each subject completed the Accuracy Level Test (ALT), a reading test. The subject's reading test grade level was subtracted from her appropriate grade in school to give a reading delay level (RDL). The mean reading grade level for all subjects was 6.7 ±2.6 and the average reading delay was 4.5 ±2.5 grades. Poor school attenders had greater reading delays (5.8 ±3.4 …

This study examined factors that facilitated or hindered the process of accommodating learning disabled nursing students in the classroom. Surveys were mailed to 300 faculty at associate and baccalaureate degree schools of nursing. The survey focused on faculty members' degree of ease or difficulty in providing accommodations, their perceptions of the adequacy of institutional support, and their own beliefs and understanding of the accommodation process. Analysis of the 109 returned surveys suggest the majority of faculty understood the need for accommodations. Human neutrophil defensins, and their analogues incorporating anionic, hydrophobic or cationic residues at the N- and C-termini, were synthesized by solid-phase procedures. The synthetic defensins were examined for their microbicidal activity against Candida albicans, two Gram-negative bacteria (Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis) and two Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus mutans). The human neutrophil peptide 1 (HNP1) and HNP2 were found to be potent candidacidal agents. HNP3, which differs by one amino acid at the N-terminus of its sequence, was totally inactive. Background
The emergence of resistance to antimicrobial agents within the salmonellae is a worldwide problem that has been associated with the use of antibiotics in livestock. Resistance to ceftriaxone and the fluoroquinolones, which are used to treat invasive salmonella infections, is rare in the United States. We analyzed the molecular characteristics of a ceftriaxone-resistant strain of Salmonella enterica serotype typhimurium isolated from a 12-year-old boy with fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Methods
We used pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and analysis of plasmids and β-lactamases to compare the ceftriaxone-resistant S. enterica serotype typhimurium from the child with four isolates of this strain …

We assessed the relative importance healthcare consumers attach to various factors in choosing a primary care doctor (PCD) in a cross-sectional, in-person survey. Three survey locations were used: doctors’ offices, a public shopping area, and meetings of a women’s organization. A total of 636 community residents, varying across major demographic categories, participated. Participants completed a 23-item survey, designed to assess which factors consumers perceive as most relevant in choosing a PCD. This site visit explored the factors that have made Indiana so successful in enrolling children in its Medicaid and SCHIP plans under the brand name Hoosier Healthwise. Site visitors met with legislators and state officials to gain understanding of the genesis and development of Hoosier Healthwise and its aggressive outreach component. A panel of representatives from partner organizations engaged in enrolling children provided further insight into this process. The site visit participants traveled to observe enrollment and operations in both urban (Marion) and rural (Clay) county offices.
