The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of depression that is going untreated in adolescents with an Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. This study included high school age students (grades 9-12) who either had a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD, had never been diagnosed with depression, and who have never been treated for depression and another group who did not have a diagnosis of either ADD/ ADHD or depression. The Effect Of Binaural Auditory Beats On The Anxiety And Psychological Hardiness Levels Of Graduate Students, Terry L. Moore

Theses

Three graduate students from a Midwestern urban university were selected from a pool of volunteers based on elevated levels of anxiety. The students were initially tested using the Self-Evaluation Questionnaire and Hardiness Scale. Students were provided with audio tapes using binaural beats. Each Self-Evaluation Questionnaire score was tracked for the purpose of determining the affect of the audio tapes on levels of anxiety and hardiness. All three students showed reduced levels of anxiety after using the tapes, with either a similar or higher level of Hardiness.

This project will focus on the study of mental illness and chemical abuse/dependence as it has progressed into the entity of dual diagnosis or what experts consider co-existing or co-occurring disorders.

Research has revealed the increase in the number of individuals suffering from co-occurring illnesses since the early 1980's. Because this condition has become the norm rather than the exception, it becomes necessary to focus more clearly on individuals that are diagnosed with this illness and on the most effective treatment in order to assist the individual in recovery.

An amperometric biosensor based on a carbon paste electrode modified with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is defined as a device for the quantitative and qualitative detection of oxidizable drugs. This paper demonstrates the advantages of using HRP as the biocatalyst in the in vitro detection of oxidizable drugs in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Amperometric analysis and batch experiments were carried out in acetate buffer (pH 4.8) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Effect Of The Combination Of Glibenclamide, An Atp-Dependent Potassium Channel Blocker, And Metoprolol, A Cardioselective B-Adrenoceptor Blocker, During Myocardial Infarction In Conscious Rats, Ömer Bozdoğan, Istvan Lepran, Julğus Gy. Papp

We investigated the possible interaction of glibenclamide and metoprolol on the occurrence of life threatening arrhythmias during the acute phase of experimental myocardial infarction. Coronary artery ligation was performed in conscious rats and ECG was recorded for 15 min following ligation. Neither metoprolol (2 mg/kg i.p., 20 min before coronary artery ligation), nor glibenclamide (5 mg/kg i.p., 30 min before ligation) pretreatment increased significantly the survival rate during the acute phase of myocardial infarction (10 % and 22 %, respectively vs. 9 % in controls). Combination of glibenclamide with metoprolol, however, significantly improved the survival rate (62 %, P < 0.05). These results suggest that the combination of a cardioselective b-blocking agent with an ATP- dependent potassium channel inhibitor may result in an enhanced antiarrhythmic effect during the acute phase of myocardial infarction.

The aim of this experimental study was to determine the effects of growth hormone on hepatic regeneration after partial hepatectomy. Thirty pathogen free Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups, each containing 10 rats. The animals were subjected to a sham operation in Group 1, and to left hepatic lobectomy in Groups 2 and 3. The animals in Groups 1 and 2 received saline solution (0.2 mg/kg/day), while growth hormone (Lilly Humotrope, Lilly France Usine de Fegersheim, France) (0.2 mg/kg/day) was given to the animals in Group 3 for seven days. Portal fibrosis with bile ductal proliferation and an increased inflammatory infiltration were seen in Chol group. The effects of the administration of a single dose of garlic on the aerobic performance of college endurance athletes were investigated in this study. Ten trained male athletes participated voluntarily in this study. A 900-mg dose of dried garlic powder or placebo was administered randomly in a double-blind cross-over fashion. Five hours after ingestion of the tablets, the subjects underwent an incremental treadmill running test according to the Bruce protocol until subjective exhaustion. Higher titers of autoantibodies have been reported in recent studies of depressed patients. In an attempt to investigate the presence of antiphospholipid autoantibodies in patients with depression, sera from both patients and healthy controls were tested for immunoglobulin G and M anticardiolipin and antiphosphatidylserine autoantibodies. We tested positive sera for antiphosphatidylserine (APSA) and anticardi- olipin autoantibody (ACA) in 10 dysthymic, 19 major depressive, and 20 healthy subjects. The level of possible microbial cross-contamination in an automatic dental radiograph processor was investigated. Pure cultures of Staphylococcus aureusATCC 6538 P, Escherichia coli ATCC 1103 and Candida utilis ATCC 18804 and a mixed culture of these three microorganisms were prepared. In the first five days of the week, 90 films contaminated with one of these pure cultures were developed. This was followed by the processing of 36 uncontaminated films that were developed in the last two days of the week. Polymeric foams seem to have potential for use in many research areas such as cell seeding and macromolecule or drug loading. Three factors were studied to evaluate the efficiency of foams as drug carrier and releasing agents. Effect of polymeric properties was examined by using two types of polymers (PHBV 7 and PHBV 22) differing only in their valerate (copolymer) content. The other factor studied was the effect of loading extent on release kinetics and rate. The results showed an unexpected inverse proportionality between drug loading and release rate. The effects of acute Grayanotoxin-I (GTX-I) administration on hepatic and renal functions in rats were investigated. GTX-I was administrated to the animals of groups 1, 2 and 3 at a single i.p. dose of 1 mg/kg, 0.5 mg/kg and 0.25 mg/kg respectively, and group 4 (control) received i.p. saline (0.9 %) solution only.
