We describe here a new member of the LysR family of transcriptional regulators, AphB, which is required for activation of the Vibrio cholerae ToxR virulence cascade. AphB activates the transcription of the tcpPH operon in response to environmental stimuli, and this process requires cooperation with a second protein, AphA. The expression of neither aphA or aphB is strongly regulated by environmental stimuli, raising the possibility that the activities of the proteins themselves may be influenced under various conditions. The psychometric properties of a revised version of the Marital Decision Making Scale (MDMS) were evaluated in this investigation. Sixty-eight couples served as participants. Distressed couples (n=34) were recruited from a community-based outpatient mental health clinic where they were seeking conjoint therapy for relationship problems; demographically matched nondistressed couples (n=34) were recruited from the community through a local survey research firm. The MDMS showed high internal consistency, test-retest reliability, interjudge agreement, and convergent and discriminant validity. A second independent sample of 60 couples (30 distressed couples and 30 nondistressed couples) was also recruited to cross-validate the results found with the …

Objectives. This study addressed the questions, (1) To what degree are home health nurses satisfied in their job? (2) What variable ranks as the most important for home health nurses' satisfaction? and, (3) Is there a difference between job satisfaction of full time employment, part time, and per diem home health nurses?

Methods. The data were collected from six home health agencies in the Hampton Roads Area resulting in a sample of (N = 72). The McCloskey and Mueller Satisfaction Scale developed in 1990 (MMSS) was used to measure home health nurses' satisfaction.

Vacuole SNAREs, including the t-SNAREs Vam3p and Vam7p and the v-SNARE Nyv1p, are found in a multisubunit "cis" complex on isolated organelles. We now identify the v-SNAREs Vti1p and Ykt6p by mass spectrometry as additional components of the immunoisolated vacuolar SNARE complex. Immunodepletion of detergent extracts with anti-Vti1p removes all the Ykt6p that is in a complex with Vam3p, immunodepletion with anti-Ykt6p removes all the Vti1p that is complexed with Vam3p, and immunodepletion with anti-Nyv1p removes all the Ykt6p in complex with other SNAREs, demonstrating that they are all together in the same cis multi-SNARE complex. Nephrogenesis in the mouse kidney begins at embryonic day 11 and ends approximately 10 days postpartum. During this period, new nephrons are continually being generated from a stem-cell population-the nephrogenic mesenchyme-in response to signals emanating from the tips of the branching ureter. Relatively little is known about the mechanism by which the nephrogenic mesenchyme cell population is maintained at the tips of the ureter in the presence of signals promoting tubulogenesis. Previous studies have shown that a loss of Bmp7 function leads to kidney defects that are a likely result of progressive loss of nephrogenic mesenchyme by apoptosis. The studies …

Therapeutic doses of ionizing radiation result in changes in the structure and function of microvascular networks in normal tissue. Previously, we reported on the early effects of ionizing radiation on microvascular networks at 3, 7, and 30 days post-irradiation [1-3]. Data from the early time points suggested that ionizing radiation significantly alters the structure and function of microvascular networks and interferes with the normal processes of vessel maturation. This analysis, prepared for the Health Care Financing Administration and the Health Resources and Services Administration, examines issues that arise under laws designed to avert excessive cost-sharing in the case of low income families whose children participate in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). High cost-sharing has been shown to significantly affect children’s participation in insurance programs, as well as their utilization of health services. This study analyzes the structure and trends of costs associated with rehabilitation services under the National Health Insurance program. Statistical analysis was performed for costs associated with in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation services in northern Taiwan. 86.97% to 88.07% of total six-month costs were declared for out-patients. Most of the moderate items for physical therapy and occupational therapy were prescribed for out-patients. In contrast, most of the complicated items for physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy were done for in-patients, especially at medical centers. Sonography (US) of the knee has gained in significance in the diagnosis of the meniscal injuries. In order to evaluate the diagnostic capabilities of US in meniscal lesions of the knee, 112 patients with suspected knee injury over a period of six months were studied with high-resolution US equipped with a 10 MHz linear transducer. Eighteen of them also received arthroscopy or magnetic resonance imaging, as a gold standard for detecting the meniscal lesion. A series of studies was designed to investigate the effect of Tai Chi Chuan for developing and maintaining cardiorespiratory function in elderly individuals.In the cross-sectional studies, cardiorespiratory function of 90 middle-aged (range 50-64 yrs) and 76 elderly (range 65-80 yrs) subjects were tested by cycle ergometry. The TCC group practiced TCC with a mean duration of 9.1±4.3 yrs. The control group consisted of 84 sedentary subjects. The VO2max of the TCC group was 15.6-26.8% higher than that of the control group. This study evaluated a novel exercise training program for the individuals diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Although sixteen patients (M:13; F:3) with moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease participated in this study, only six completed the training programs. Cycle ergometry was used to test and train the patients. The training was performed three times weekly and lasted three months, with each training section lasting 30 to 40 minutes. Adult anaplastic astrocytomas comprise a small subset of intramedullary spinal cord tumors and carry a dismal prognosis. Characteristically, a short prodrome occurs only several weeks before diagnosis, followed by progressive neurological deterioration and death. This article describes a 48-year-old male patient suffering from lower back pain with radiculagia and progressive weakness of both lower limbs for 5 months. The patient was initially diagnosed as having a lower lumbarintervertebral disc herniation and underwent laminectomy with spinal rods instrumentation two months following the diagnosis.
