Myofascial trigger point (MTrP) is a quite common painful muscular disorder in clinical practice. When an MTrP is mechanically stimulated (needling or snapping palpation), a local twitch response (LTR) can be elicited, which is one of the characteristics of MTrP. Recent studies on humans and rabbits suggest that an MTrP is at the endplate zone. The purpose of this study is to map the distribution of sensitive loci from which an LTR can be elicited by mechanical stimulation of it in rat skeletal muscle. Electrical injuries, compared to fire or scald burns, occur infrequently but often result in amputations causing disabilities. A retrospective study was undertaken to present some statistical data and determine the correlation of serum creatinine kinase (CK) level and creatine kinase myocardial band isoenzyme (CK-MB) level with treatment, morbidity and outcome. From January 1995 to December 1996, thirty-six electrical burn patients were admitted to our hospital. Thirty-four of these patients were men and two were women, and the mean age was 31.3 years old. There were 27 high-voltage injuries and 9 low-voltage injuries. Twenty-three patients had a total of 61 surgeries, …

In clinical prosthetic experience, profuse sweating was a major problem when conventional sockets or inserts were used. However, the newly developed silicon suction socket could prevent that. We doubted that these differences came from the different nature of the silicon, pelite and polyethylene. So using the starch iodine sweating test, the forearm skins of the twenty normal subjects were sealed with a piece of 2cm×2cm×0.3cm silicon, pelite or polyethylene respectively. Surprisingly, not only silicon but also pelite and polyethylene could inhibit sweating. This meant that decreased sweating of the silicon suction socket might not be due to the chemical property …

Methylglyoxal (MG), a dicarbonyl compound produced by the fragmentation of triose phosphates, forms advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) in vitro. Glyoxalase-I catalyzes the conversion of MG to S-D-lactoylglutathione, which in turn is converted to D-lactate by glyoxalase-II. To evaluate directly the effect of glyoxalase-I activity on intracellular AGE formation, GM7373 endothelial cells that stably express human glyoxalase-I were generated. Glyoxalase-I activity in these cells was increased 28-fold compared to neo-transfected control cells (21.80+/-0.1 vs. 0. 76+/-0.02 micromol/min/mg protein, n = 3, P < 0.001). In neo-transfected cells, 30 mM glucose incubation increased MG and D-lactate concentration approximately twofold above 5 MM (35.5+/-5.8 vs. 19.6+/-1.6, P < 0.02, n = 3, and 21.0+/-1.3 vs. 10.0+/-1.2 pmol/ 10(6) cells, n = 3, P < 0.001, respectively). In contrast, in glyoxalase-I-transfected cells, 30 mM glucose incubation did not increase MG concentration at all, while increasing the enzymatic product D-lactate by > 10-fold (18.9+/-3.2 vs. 18.4+/- 5.8, n = 3, P = NS, and 107.1+/-9.0 vs. 9.4+/-0 pmol/10(6) cells, n = …

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the first five years of the AFNC when its initial framework, policies, and practices were established. Purpose: Treatment of vascular lesions of the high cervical internal carotid artery (zone III) resulting from penetrating trauma, blunt trauma, aneurysms, and atherosclerosis pose a challenge for vascular surgeons due to bony interference's of the mandibular ramus and mastoid process. Although many techniques have been described, two methods, have been identified as effective and associated with low morbidity. The purpose of this study is to compare these two methods, mandibular distraction and vertical ramus osteotomy, for their effectiveness at increasing access to the cranial base and distal internal carotid artery.

As the most common cause of sexually transmitted disease in women, chlamydial infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. To better understand the role played by sex hormones in modulating the immune response of the genital tract to microbial infections, we have developed a rat model to study Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Inbred female Lewis rats were primed with progesterone and inoculated by intrauterine instillation of C. trachomatis (mouse pneumonitis strain MoPn) into each uterine horn. The O157 antigen of Escherichia coli shares structural elements with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens of other bacterial species, notably Brucella abortus and Yersinia enterocolitica 09, a fact that confounds the interpretation of assays for anti-O157 antibodies. To address this problem, a blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (bELISA) was designed with E. coli O157:H7 LPS as the antigen and a monoclonal antibody specific for E. coli O157, designated 13B3, as the competing antibody. The bELISA had equivalent sensitivity to, and significantly higher specificity than, the indirect ELISA (iELISA), detecting anti-O157 antibodies in sera from cattle experimentally inoculated with O157:H7. Results on the subcellular localization of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) have been controversial. To determine the subcellular distribution and trafficking of the MR in living cells after binding of agonists and antagonists, we expressed a MR-green fluorescent protein (GFP) chimera in mammalian cells lacking endogenous MR. The GFP-tagged MR (GFP-MR) remained transcriptionally active, as determined in cotransfection experiments with the MR-responsive reporter, TAT3-LUC. The subcellular localization of GFP-MR was monitored by fluorescence time-lapse microscopy. In the absence of hormone, MR was present both in the cytoplasm and nucleus. An investigation was carried out to assess the prognostic significance of proliferation marker Ki67 in a group of lung cancer patients treated by surgery (limited disease). Tissue was not available for Ki67 immunostaining in inoperable group. The diagnosis is established by bronchial biopsy which does not carry enough tissue for frozen section and counting. This study is supplemented by estimating the prognostic significance of histological sub-types in the operable group and in a group of inoperable patients with extensive disease. These are usually treated by radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. In all, 267 patients were studied including 105 treated by surgery. These …

Abstract—Participants who had to recall 12 childhood events (a difficult task) were more likely to infer that they could not remember large parts of their childhood than participants who had to recall 4 events (an easy task), although the former recalled three times as many events. This pattern of results suggests that memory judgments are based on the experienced ease or difficulty of recall. Accordingly, the negative impact of recalling 12 events was attenuated when participants were led to attribute the experienced difficulty to the task rather than to the poor quality of their memory. Mitochondrial myopathies usually have a chronic course of progressive limb weakness, exercise induced myalgia without muscle tenderness, and normal or only mildly raised serum creatine kinase. Acute or subacute presentation or exacerbation of nervous system signs is common in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and in mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS), but has not been reported for muscle in mitochondrial diseases. We describe a patient who presented with rapidly progressive, subacute muscle weakness due to a mitochondrial disorder.

The purpose of this pilot study was to correlate the three biologic markers of the Ovulon fertility monitor (a long-term predictive peak about 6 days before ovulation, a short-term predictive peak about 1 day before ovulation, and a nadir at the time of ovulation) with the peak in cervical mucus and the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge in the urine. Ten volunteer subjects (mean age 30.2 years) monitored their cervical-vaginal mucus, the surge of LH in the urine with a home assay test, and their vaginal electrical readings (with Ovulon monitors) on a daily basis for one to four menstrual cycles. …

Cerebrovascular accidents often produce alterations in the ability to control movement. Recovery of impaired motor function varies with the individual. We studied the correlation between the location as well as the size of lesions and the prognosis for motor recovery. Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) of the brain were done in stroke patients with cortical, or subcortical infarcts or hemorrhage within 0.5 to 1.5 (mean 0.9±0.25) months after a stroke. The muscle tone, motor recovery and activities of daily living of the patients were assessed by a modified Ashworth scale, Brunnstrom’s recovery stage and functional independence measure (FIM) respectively.
