Active transport via Na+, K+-ATPase plays an important role in establishing and maintaining proper ionic gradient across all mammalian cell membranes. A strict regulation of Na+, and K+ ion levels is especially important in excitable cells such as neurons and myocytes. Inhibition of the enzyme is associated with several pathological conditions and has serious detrimental effects on cerebral cortical cells. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the incisive canal and maxillary median diastema, and to identify an imaging method capable of documenting the geometry and dimensions of the incisive canal. The sample consisted of 59 dry skulls, 26 of which had a maxillary median diastema ranging in size from 0.1 mm to 2.8 mm (mean 1.0 mm, SD = 0.7 mm). Each skull had all of the permanent maxillary teeth present from first molar to first molar and lacked any apparent non-orthodontic condition that could have caused the diastema. Many orthodontists use commercial orthodontic laboratories for the processing of their impressions including preparation of the impression for pouring, model retrieval, final trim, and labeling. It was studied, by way of random sample survey, what materials and methods were most commonly utilized in 100 offices of members of the American Association of Orthodontics. Patients on cytotoxic therapy often develop neutropenia and fever. Our interest was to identify the common pathogens isolated from such patients and to study the sensitivity patterns of these organisms to the antibiotics used in their treatment. Thus, guidelines can be established by hospitals to identify which antibiotics can be used in the treatment of these patients when the results of cultures and sensitivities are not available. We conducted a retrospective study of neutropenic pediatrics presenting to AKUH from July, 1990 to June, 1996. A total of 153 isolates in 35 different patients were studied. Histologic diagnosis ultimately determines the prognosis and treatment of lesions causing spinal cord compression. Modem imaging techniques have revolutionized the procedure of localizing lesions pre¬senting with signs and symptoms of spinal cord compression. As a result, these lesions are more accessible for fine needle aspiration and biopsy. A quick diagnosis is possible if cytologic preparation is made. Similarly, intraoperative frozen section facility not only provides rapid diagnosis, but also offers oppor tunity of appropriate management decision there and then. Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a diverse and heterogeneous group of tumours The sub-classification of these tumours is of importance for both prognosis and treatment. Classically, sub- categorization is based purely on histomorphological grounds, but as new techniques evolve, a more, conclusive and accurate diagnosis can be made. This study describes the prevalence of soft tissue sarcomas in adults diagnosed at The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) and the impact of immunohistochemistry(IHC) on the precise sub-categorization of these tumours. โรคความดันโลหิตสูงในสุนัข หมายถึง ภาวะที่สุนัขมีความดันโลหิตสูงกว่าปกติ โดยอาจจำแนกความ ดันโลหิตสูงตามความรุนแรงของค่าความดันที่เพิ่มขึ้น ความสำคัญของโรคนี้ในสุนัขยังไม่เป็นที่แน่ชัด แต่ พบว่าสุนัขที่มีความดันโลหิตสูงอย่างรุนแรง มักจะเกิดความผิดปกติของการมองเห็น วิธีการวัดความดัน โลหิตในสุนัขมีอยู่หลายวิธี ซึ่งแต่ละวิธีให้ความแม่นยำและความถูกต้องแตกต่างกันไป ประกอบกับลักษณะ ทางกายวิภาคของขาสุนัข เป็นอุปสรรคที่สำคัญในการวัดความดันโลหิตในทางคลินิก นอกจากนี้พบว่าความ ดันโลหิตยังมีความเปลี่ยนแปลงขึ้น-ลงได้ในแต่ละนาทีนอกเหนือจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงขึ้น-ลงตามปกติในช่วงเวลาของวัน ดังนั้นค่าเฉลี่ยการวัดความดันอย่างต่อเนื่องตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง จึงให้ผลถูกต้องสูงสุดในการวัดความดันโลหิต บทความนี้ได้รวบรวมนำเสนอสถานภาพปัจจุบันของการเกิดความดันโลหิตสูงในสุนัข ความหมาย และชนิดของความดันโลหิตสูง วิธีการวัดความดันโลหิต ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อความดันโลหิตในสุนัข รวมถึงพยาธิสรีรวิทยาของการเกิดภาวะความดันโลหิตสูงและกลไกการควบคุมความดันโลหิตโดยอาศัยระบบประสาทและไต

We examined the relationships among general appraisal style, attributional style, trait anxiety, coping styles, and health status (i.e., depression, hostility, and flu-like symptoms) in a study for which we also examined the validity of a trait measure of general appraisal. Participants completed personality measures at the beginning of an academic semester, and health assessments at regular intervals throughout the semester. Consistent with our predictions, after removing the influence of neuroticism and attributional style, general appraisal style led to more negative, and less positive affect 2 weeks later, and to more stressful and threatening appraisals of a life event occurring 3 …

The latency-related transcript (LRT) of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is the only abundant viral RNA detected during latency. A previous study (A. Hossain, L. M. Schang, and C. Jones, J. Virol. 69:5345–5352, 1995) concluded that splicing of polyadenylated [poly(A) +] and splicing of nonpolyadenylated [poly(A) -] LRT are different. In this study, splice junction sites of LRT were identified. In trigeminal ganglia of acutely infected calves (1, 7, or 15 days postinfection [p.i.]) or in latently infected calves (60 days p.i.), alternative splicing of poly(A) + LRT occurred. Paradujadinia Halicoris (Owen, 1833), A Nematode From The Stomach Of A Sea Cow In The Gulf Of Thailand, Jitra Waikagul, Suwat Thonghom, Wanna Maipanich

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Twenty-seven male and 26 female roundworms were recovered from the stomach of Dugong dugon from Trang Province, Southern Thailand. The worms were kept in 70% alcohol and transported to the Department of Helminthology for study. The worm has three lips with interlabia, intestinal caecum and ventriculus. The male worm presents two spicules alate in the middle shaft, four pairs of precloacal papillae, two pairs of paracloacals and two pairs of postcloacal papillae. After comparison with specimens borrowed from Queensland Museum, the nematode was ascertained to be Paradujardinia halicoris.

Spinal neurones in the thoracolumbar intermediolateral column (IML) of the rat were double-labelled for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1r) using a double indirect immunofluorescent technique. Immunostaining revealed a colocalisation of NOS and NK1r in a number of the IML neurones, particularly those that had relatively large but scattered cell bodies, and the area closed to lamina X. Neurones that expressed NK1r were more likely to co-express NOS whereas only small number of NOS-expressing neurones were NK1r immunoreactive. From this it may be concluded that the IML neurones, which are principally sympathetic preganglionic neurones, are composed of …

ความชุกของโรคภูมิคุ้มกันบกพร่องในแมวที่แสดงอาการทางคลินิกของโรคเรื้อรัง+, รสมา ภู่สุนทรธรรม, คณิศักดิ์ อรวีระกุล, ภาวนา อุทัยโชติวรรณ, กาญจน์ เชื้อศิริ

ทำการศึกษาในแมว 28 ราย ที่เข้ามารับการรักษา ณ โรงพยาบาลสัตว์เล็ก คณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ระหว่างเดือนมิถุนายน ถึง ตุลาคม 2540 และได้รับการวินิจฉัยเบื้องต้นจาก สัตวแพทย์ประจำโรงพยาบาลว่าเป็นโรคติดเชื้ออย่างเรื้อรังของระบบทางเดินหายใจ ระบบทางเดินอาหาร และ/หรือ ระบบขับถ่ายปัสสาวะเกินกว่า 2 สัปดาห์ ตรวจพบหลักฐานการปรากฏแอนติบอดี้บ่งชี้การติด เชื้อโรคภูมิคุ้มกันบกพร่องในแมว (FIV) 32.0% พบการติดเชื้อในแมวเพศผู้ (77.8%) มากกว่าแมวเพศเมีย (22.2%) อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (P< 0.05) อายุเฉลี่ยของแมวที่ติดเชื้อเท่ากับ 5.44 ± 2.51 ปี โดยพบ มากที่สุดในแมวที่มีช่วงอายุ 5-7 ปี (55.6%) รองลงมาคือช่วงอายุน้อยกว่า 4 ปี (22.2%) และช่วงอายุมากกว่า 7 ปี (22.2%) เมื่อพิจารณาตามลักษณะของที่อยู่อาศัย พบว่าเป็นในแมวที่เลี้ยงในตึกแถวมาก ที่สุด(77.8%)รองลงมาจะพบในแมวที่เลี้ยงในบ้านเดี่ยว (11.1%) และห้องเช่า (11.1%) จากการตรวจพบ แอนติบอดี้บ่งชี้การติดเชื้อในแมวที่แสดงอาการของการติดเชื้อที่ระบบขับถ่ายปัสสาวะเรื้อรังมากที่สุด (55.6%) ระบบทางเดินอาหาร (22.2%) ระบบทางเดินหายใจร่วมกับทางเดินอาหาร (11.1%) ระบบทางเดินอาหารร่วม กับระบบปัสสาวะ (11.1%) และพบว่าแมวที่กินอาหารเจ้าของปรุงให้เอง (88.9%) มีการติดเชื้อมากกว่าใน แมวที่กินอาหารสำเร็จรูป (11.1%) นอกจากนี้พบการติดเชื้อสูงในแมวที่เลี้ยงแบบปล่อย (100%) และเป็น แมวไม่เคยได้รับวัคซีนใด ๆ (88.9%) สำหรับค่าทางโลหิตวิทยาในแมวที่มีการติดเชื้อ FIV นั้น พบว่ามีค่า ทางโลหิตวิทยาอยู่ในช่วงปกติ ค่าเคมีคลินิกเปลี่ยนแปลงตามอาการทางคลินิกของโรคเรื้อรังที่เกิดขึ้น

จุดประสงค์ของการศึกษานี้ เพื่อศึกษาถึงอิทธิพลของฮอร์โมน recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) ต่อการตอบสนองการกระตุ้นเพิ่มการตกไข่ด้วยฮอร์โมน follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) ใน กระบือปลัก กระบือทั้งหมด 16 ตัว ถูกเหนี่ยวนำการเป็นสัดด้วยการสอดแท่งซิลิโคนที่เคลือบด้วยโปรเจส เตอโรน และ estradiol benzoate ชนิดแคปซูล (CIDR-B) เข้าทางช่องคลอด หลังจากนั้นแบ่งกระบือออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม กลุ่มละ 8 ตัว โดย กระบือในกลุ่มที่หนึ่งได้รับ FBST ชนิดที่ซึมเข้าสู่กระแสเลือดอย่างช้า ๆ ในวันที่ 4 หลังการใส่ฮอร์โมน CIDR-B กระบือกลุ่มที่สองไม่ได้รับ FBST การกระตุ้นเพิ่มการตกไข่กระทําโดยการฉีด FSH แบบลดโต๊ส ปริมาณทั้งหมด 260 มิลลิกรัม เช้า-เย็น เป็นเวลา 3.5 วัน โดยเริ่มจากวันที่ 9-11 หลัง การให้ฮอร์โมน CIDR-B ในวันที่ 3 ของการให้ FSH ฉีดพรอสตาแกลนดินขนาด 500 ไมโครกรัม พร้อมทั้งดึง CIDR-B ออก เมื่อกระบือแสดงอาการเป็นสัด ผสมพันธุ์โดยใช้พ่อกระบือคุมฝูง ทำการเก็บตัวอ่อนในวันที่ 6 หลังจากที่กระบือแสดงอาการเป็นสัด ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ค่าเฉลี่ยของจำนวนคอร์ปัส ลูเทียม ของกระบือ ในกลุ่มที่หนึ่ง และสอง เท่ากับ 6.0±2.2 และ 4.3±1.1 ตามลำดับ จำนวนตัวอ่อนที่เก็บได้ และตัวอ่อนที่มี คุณภาพดีของกระบือกลุ่มที่หนึ่ง และ สอง เท่ากับ 4.5±1.6 และ 3.0±1.0 และ 2.3+1.0 และ 0.8±0.3 ตามลำดับ จำนวนตัวอ่อนที่มีคุณภาพดีที่เก็บได้จากกระบือที่ได้รับ FBST มีมากกว่ากลุ่มที่ไม่ได้รับ rBST …

Objective: The role of group therapy in treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been traditionally restricted to issues of self-esteem and interpersonal relationships, rather than primary symptoms of the disorder. In this study, the authors examined the effectiveness of a 16-week trauma-focused, cognitive-behavioral group therapy, named Interactive Psychoeducational Group Therapy, in reducing primary symptoms of PTSD in five groups (N=29) of multiply traumatized women diagnosed with chronic PTSD. Method: The authors made assessments at baseline, at 1-month intervals during treatment, at termination, and at 6-month follow-up by using self-report and structured interview measures of PTSD and psychiatric symptoms. Elongated fibrinogen molecules are comprised of two outer “D” domains, each connected through a “coiled-coil” region to the central “E” domain. Fibrin forms following thrombin cleavage in the E domain and then undergoes intermolecular end-to-middle D:E domain associations that result in double-stranded fibrils. Factor XIIIa mediates crosslinking of the C-terminal regions of γ chains in each D domain (the γXL site) by incorporating intermolecular ɛ-(γ-glutamyl)lysine bonds between amine donor γ406 lysine of one γ chain and a glutamine acceptor at γ398 or γ399 of another. This study compares academic performance, behavior, and commitment of basketball and volleyball athletes and non-athletes in a rural Canadian high school. It compares mid-term and final grades in each school discipline; visits to an administrator for disciplinary visits; and demerit points for improper behavior; and estimates the mean weekly time commitment for athletes in each sport.

Few studies of dentofacial and orthodontic structural relationships relative to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction have been reported. We undertook this investigation to determine any correlation of orthodontic and dentofacial characteristics with TMJ bilateral disc displacement. The population of patients was selected from a TMJ clinic where a control group of asymptomatic volunteers had been previously established and standardized. Differences in skeletal structural features were determined among three study groups: (1) asymptomatic volunteers with no TMJ disk displacement, (2) symptomatic patients with no TMJ disc displacement, and (3) symptomatic patients with bilateral TMJ disk displacement.
