Antley‐Bixler Syndrome: A Case Report And Discussion, Scott Lebard, Lisa Thiemann

Antley-Bixler Syndrome (ABS) is an autosomal recessive trait disorder characterized by multiple bone and cartilaginous abnormalities. Primary features include significant craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia with choanal stenosis or atresia, femoral bowing, radiohumeral synostosis, and multiple joint contractures. Cardiac, renal, and gastrointestinal malformations have also been described. This report describes the management of a four-month-old male who underwent cranial vault remodeling to relieve craniosynostosis and discusses the potential concerns of the anaesthetist during care of children with Antley-Bixler Syndrome.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Since 1971, CDC and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have maintained a collaborative surveillance system for collecting and periodically reporting data that relate to occurrences and causes of waterborne-disease outbreaks (WBDOs).

REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: This summary includes data for January 1995 through December 1996 and previously unreported outbreaks in 1994.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM: The surveillance system includes data about outbreaks associated with drinking water and recreational water. State, territorial, and local public health departments are primarily responsible for detecting and investigating WBDOs and for voluntarily reporting them to CDC on a standard form.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether sinoaortic deafferentation (SAD) alters the severity of hypertension or sympathoadrenal contribution to mean blood pressure (MAP) during renal wrap hypertension. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with radiotelemetry transmitters for 24-hour recording of MAP and heart rate. All rats underwent either SAD or sham SAD (Intact) surgery and were allowed to recover for 10 to 14 days. The rats were then assigned to a normotensive (Sham) group or a hypertensive (Wrap) group in which 1-kidney figure-8 renal wrap was performed. This study assessed the efficacy of a T’ai Chi exercise intervention on functional balance and walking speed. Twenty-two volunteer subjects over the age of 65 were included and categorized as near-frail or well elderly, based on their functional status. Subjects randomly selected for the intervention group participated in a 45 minute T’ai Chi group exercise class, bi-weekly for six weeks. Pre- and post-intervention data was on the Berg Balance Scale, and on self-selected and maximum walking speed. The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of chromosomal abnormalities in men with severe andrological infertility, In 50 men with azoospermia and severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT), who referred for our intracytoplasmic sperm injection program, a cytogenetic study has been prospectively carried out. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were cultured for chromosomal analysis and for each proband 30 metaphases were analyzed by GTG banding technique. In this study, the blood flow velocity waveforms of the leiomyoma, uterine artery and myometrium with color doppler ultrasound were analyzed in patients with postoperative diagnosis of benign uterine leiomyomas and 15 healthy volunteers as a control group were enrolled into the study. The lowest RI and PI values obtained from uterine leiomyomas were 0.39 and 0.93. Mean RI and PI values obtained from uterine leiomyomas were 0.39 and 0.93. The purpose of this study is to examine the morphological effect which appears in acini and ductus of palatine glands in patients wearing total prostheses. Acini had considerably wide lumens due to de-generation and desquamation in secretory epithelial cells in those who wear prostheses during varying periods. It was observed that, in regions adjacent to the apical membrane in most of the epithelial cells of acini and excretory canals, large vacuoles were formed, whereas in some others, cytoplasm was disarranged due to membrane destruction. The production and detection of a mannoprotein adhesin (MPA) of the hyphal-form cells of C. albicans on plastic petri dishes was investigated. Using Concanavalin A-coated latex microspheres, the MPA was detected on the plastic surface on which C. albicans produced germ tubes. The adhesin was extracted using dithiothreitol and iodoacetamide. It did not inhibit the adhesion of the yeast-form C. albicans to buccal epithelial cells (BEC). This suggested that the MPA of the hyphal-form cells on the plastic was different from that on the yeast cells responsible for attachment to the BECs.

We investigated limited joint mobility in 77 patients with type I diabetes mellitus. The patients were also assesed for neuropathy, retinopathy and pulmonary complications. The prevalence of limited joint mobility was 47%. Skin changes were present in 87% of patients with diabetes of more than 5 years' duration. No relationship was found between limited joint mobility and metabolic control, but there was a very strong correlation between limited joint mobility and other diabetic complications such as neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy. Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) may present in various clinical forms, either sporadic or a counterpart of hereditary endocrine disorders. The appropriate surgical procedure for MTC is total thyroidectomy combined with central neck clearance. The aim of this study was to document the initial clinical presentation, surgical treatment and clinical course of MTC in 27 patients. Thirteen (48.1%) cases were diagnosed as hereditary, either MEN 2a(7/27, 25.9%) or 2b syndrome (1/27, 3.7%) or familial non-MEN MTC (5/27, 18.5%), and fourteen cases were diagnosed as sporadic. In this study the evaluation of textile worker's noise induced hearing loss was reviewed cross sectionally. Endogenous leukotrienes (LT) levels in plasma and urine samples, and LT levels released from stimulated leukocytes in vitro were examined in children with steroid sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS). Plasma LT concentrations were found to be higher in the SSNS group than in healthy subjects. Subjects with SSNS were also shown to have high levels of urinary cysteinyl-LTs and LTB 4 , while healthy children had only urinary LTE 4 levels. Also it evaluated whether non-certified nurses reported a greater increase in knowledge and skill after the ENPC than the certified nurse.

A descriptive, correlation design was used to examine the relationship between the Health Belief Model (HBM) variables and breast self-examination (BSE) in a population of rural women. Champion's HBM Scale (1993) was given at a cancer screening clinic (n=127). The construct validity for this instrument was established by Champion and alpha reliability for subscales ranged from .74 to .91 in this study.

Logistical regression was performed using the HBM variables of perceived susceptibility, seriousness, benefits, barriers, health motivation, and confidence. Barriers and confidence made a significant difference in BSE performance among the subjects in this study.

Information about children between the ages of 6 and 12 was obtained through a retrospective analysis of 120 closed records from two different child psychiatric hospitals. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is a major cause of knee pain and is caused by lateral patellar tracking. Treatment consists of strengthening the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO). While many exercises strengthen the VMO, simultaneous vastus lateralis (VL) strengthening often occurs and patellar malalignment remains. The VMO must, therefore, be strengthened independently or to a greater extent than the VL. Thus, the VMO:VL ratio of activity must be considered rather than VMO activity alone. The assumed correlation between sensibility loss in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and hand function has not been supported by research. The purpose of this study is to examine this relationship. Thirteen subjects with CTS, no previous hand surgeries, hypothyroidism, or diabetes participated. The Weinstein Enhanced Sensory Test was used to assess sensibility and the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test was used to assess hand function. No correlations were found between sensibility loss and hand function. Despite a small sample, lack of correlation between sensibility loss in CTS and hand function is significant. It suggests that further research is needed.

The incidence of urinary incontinence (UI) in women has been estimated to be as high as 50%, and ranges from 17-52% in nulliparous women (women who have never been pregnant). The purpose of this study was to describe real and perceived barriers for UI affected women to seeking evaluation and treatment. Seventeen women were interviewed. 410 surveys were sent to women living in Southern Michigan to identify participants. Twenty-one met the inclusion criteria and seventeen were purposively interviewed regarding their experiences with UI. Themes were identified and generated to increase awareness of attitudes toward UI.
