This study explored the possibility that some individuals with alcohol and amphetamine addictions are initially motivated to use alcohol and amphetamines because of underlying issues involving body dissatisfaction and weight reduction associated with Anorexia and Bilimia Nervosa. Attorneys leave law school with limited knowledge and skills
concerning the issues that arise in mental disability law. Yet
psychiatrists and psychologists are appearing with increasing
frequency as witnesses in the nation's courts, and more attorneys
and judges can therefore expect to have to deal with testimony from
mental health professionals. To our knowledge, this article is the
first published assessment of practicing attorneys' and judges'
needs for continuing legal education (CLE) on mental disability
issues.

The 267 Dayton-area attorneys and 41 southwestern Ohio judges
who responded to our mailed survey said that one-seventh of their

Teen pregnancy has become an issue that educators and public policy makers are obliged to treat as a serious problem. Too often, explanations of teen pregnancy have included uncritical use of the notion of adolescents at risk. Recently, however, attention has been given to structurally-determined contextual factors in explaining teen pregnancy. Such contextual factors include economic and educational opportunities and costs, as well as chances for valued participation in socially and culturally stable communities. A series of acyclic phosphonomethylether nucleosides were synthesized and then evaluated for inhibitory activity against respiratory viruses of clinical significance using CPE inhibition, neutral red uptake and virus yield reduction assays. Of the 20 compounds synthesized, none significantly inhibited influenza A or B viruses or respiratory syncytial virus strains A2, Long or 18537; the selective indices (SI) were less than 10. A new compound, GS-2128 (2R, 5R-9-[2,5-dihydro-5-(phosphonomethoxy)-2-furanyl]adenine; D4API), selectively inhibited adenovirus 5 (SI>10) as did GS-0577 (9-(3-hydroxy-2-phosphonylmethoxypropyl)-adenine; HPMPA) and GS-0504 [(S)-1-[3-hydroxy-2-(phosphonylmethoxypropyl)]-cytosine; HPMPC]. With respect to the ethical debate about the treatment of animals in biomedical and behavioral research, Harry F. Harlow represents a paradox. On the one hand, his work on monkey cognition and social development fostered a view of the animals as having rich subjective lives filled with intention and emotion. On the other, he has been criticized for the conduct of research that seemed to ignore the ethical implications of his own discoveries. The basis of this contradiction is discussed and propositions for current research practice are presented.

Adolescence is often considered a time filled with emotional conflict and stress. That stress often gives rise to psychological and behavioral problems for a large number of adolescents (Zigler & Stevenson, 1993). Teens experience poor self-concepts, decreases in self-esteem, depression, and a general inability to cope with the stress experienced during this time period. It is reported that many youth also lack support and guidance from their peers, families, and schools which would normally provide security in the development of successful personal identities (Clagett, 1992).

Strengthening of trunk musculature is an important part of prevention and treatment for low back pain. Various machines have been developed to target the trunk muscles. The Rotary Torso Unit is being marketed by Fitness Plus Inc, however, no research has been conducted to validate the claims made by the manufacturer. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to measure and describe the muscle activity elicited while exercising on the Fitness Plus Rotary Torso Unit. For this study we used 14 healthy male subjects between the ages of22 and 40 and with no prior history of back pathology.

Migraine and tension-type are by far the most common forms of headaches, but from a physical therapy standpoint, the literature indicates that tension-type headaches respond better from the services provided by a therapist. The objective of this literature review will be to examine the different nonpharmacologic physical therapy approaches to the treatment of tension-type headaches. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) causes irritation or compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel at the wrist. CTS is caused by factors including bony abnormalities, neuropathic conditions, inflammatory conditions, and most commonly, cumulative trauma. The trauma involves excessive repetition, force, bending, vibration, and impact activities performed at home or at work. As a result, the median nerve becomes irritated and intermittent sensory deficits occur initially leading to motor dysfunction with advanced disease. The purpose of this study was to establish data on active cervical range of motion for collegiate freestyle swimmers, to determine if training has an effect on cervical range of motion, and to investigate if breathing style influences cervical rotation to the right and left after training. The sample consisted of 29 varsity swim team members from the University of North Dakota (12 females and 17 males) who had participated in experiment IRB-9504-257. Aim: To test the hypothesis that a strategy including cholesterol screening and dietary education is more effective than dietary education alone in changing dietary behavior and serum cholesterol levels.

Methods: Individuals at four worksites were enrolled in a randomized trial with a 'full intervention' condition in which subjects were told their serum cholesterol value and also received a dietary change kit (n=236), and a 'partial intervention' condition in which subjects received the same dietary change kit, but were not told their serum cholesterol value (n=284). The purpose of this constructivist research study was to examine the idea of returning to the orphanage system, as a placement option for children who have been removed from their homes. The authors felt that this was especially important since lawmakers have been discussing this option as an answer to the question of welfare reform, and further felt that decisions such as these should not be made without the input of professionals in the social work field.

Contemporary research on caregiving has focused mainly on caregiver burden experienced by children caring for elderly parents. Most gerontological research (e.g., Greenberg, 1991; Greenberg & Becker, 1988) has stressed the movement of caregiver burden and related stress down through the intergenerational family system from parents to children. This research has ignored the impact of caregiver burden and stress on aging parents whose adult children have experienced major life stressors. In this situation, the movement of the caregiver burden moves up through the intergenerational family system as parents assume the caregiving role for adult children.
