Strongyloidiasis is an intestinal disease that can last for decades due to the occurrence of autoinfective larvae (L3a) in an infected person, which contribute to the maintenance of the population of adult worms in the intestine. The goal of the present study was to determine if L3a are susceptible to the protective immunity that targets the infective stage of the worm, the third-stage larvae (L3). Mice immunized and challenged with Strongyloides stercoralis L3 kill more than 90% of challenge larvae contained within diffusion chambers. The intracellular fate of Chlamydia psittaci during infection of a monocytic cell line, THP1, was characterized. Cytochalasin D inhibited phagocytosis of latex beads but had no effect on infection by C. psittaci, and vacuoles expressed the transferrin receptor, suggesting accessibility to the endocytic pathway. Early Chlamydia-containing vacuoles expressed major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules, and most vacuoles fused with host cell lysosomes, since they expressed LAMP-1 and had acidic pHs. In cells prestimulated with gamma interferon, vacuoles also expressed MHC class II molecules, suggesting that the monocytes might effectively process Chlamydia-derived antigens for presentation by MHC class I and …

Although prostatic-intraepithelial neoplasia appears as early as the third decade and as many as 80% of 80 year old men have epithelial cells in their prostate that fit the morphological criteria for cancer, only about 10% of men will ever have the clinical disease and less than 3% will die from it. ลูกสุนัขที่มีการติดโรคพยาธิปากขอและพยาธิไส้เดือนตามธรรมชาติไม่จำกัดเพศ พันธุ์ อายุ ไม่เกิน 3 เดือน จากฝ่ายควบคุมโรคพิษสุนัขบ้า กรุงเทพมหานคร จำนวน 60 ตัว นำมาศึกษา เปรียบเทียบประสิทธิภาพของยาถ่ายพยาธิไนโตรสะคาเนต มีเบนดาโซล และยาถ่ายพยาธิที่มีส่วน ผสมของไพแรนเทลฟีแบนเทล พราซิควอนเทล แบ่งสุนัขทดลองออกเป็น 4 กลุ่ม กลุ่มละ 15 ตัว กลุ่มที่หนึ่งเป็นกลุ่มที่ไม่ได้รับยาถ่ายพยาธิ กลุ่มที่สองให้กินยาไนโตรสะคาเนต ชนิดเม็ด ขนาด 50 มก.ต่อน้ําหนักตัว 1 กก. ครั้งเดียว กลุ่มที่สามให้กินยามีเบนดาโซล ชนิดเม็ดขนาด 22 มก. ต่อน้ำหนักตัว 1 กก. ติดต่อกันนาน 5 วัน กลุ่มที่สี่ให้กินยาที่มีส่วนผสมของไพแรนเทล 144 มก. ฟีแบนเทล 150 มก. และ พราซิควอนเทล 50 มก. ขนาด 1 เม็ดต่อน้ำหนักตัว 10 กก. ครั้งเดียว ก่อนและหลังการให้ยาถ่ายพยาธิ เก็บอุจจาระและตรวจนับไข่พยาธิต่ออุจจาระ 1 กรัม (EPG) ด้วยวิธีแมคมาสเตอร์ และตรวจหาตัวพยาธิที่ถูกขับปนออกมากับอุจจาระสุนัขทุกตัว ติดต่อกันทุก วันนาน 7 วัน ภายหลังจากสิ้นสุดการทดลองทําการผ่าซากสุนัขทดลองเพื่อตรวจหาตัวพยาธิในระบบทางเดินอาหาร นับจำนวน จำแนกชนิด และประเมินประสิทธิภาพของยาด้วยวิธี critical test และ controlled test ผลการศึกษาพบว่าประสิทธิภาพของยาถ่ายพยาธิไนโตรสะคาเนต มีเบนดาโซล และ ยาที่มีส่วนผสมของไพแรนเทล ฟีแบนเทล และพราซิควอนเทล ต่อพยาธิปากขอและพยาธิไส้เดือน ให้ผลเป็นที่น่าพอใจคล้ายคลึงกัน โดยที่มีเบนดาโซลและ PFP มีประสิทธิภาพสูง 97.45 -100% ต่อ พยาธิปากขอ (Ancylostoma spp.) และพยาธิไส้เดือน (Toxocara canis) ไนโตรสะคาเนตมี ประสิทธิภาพสูง …

ลูกสุกรหลังหย่านมจำนวน 60 ตัว แบ่งเป็น 3 กลุ่ม กลุ่มละ 20 ตัว ได้ทําการฉีด วัคซีนป้องกันโรคพิษสุนัขบ้าเทียมชนิดเชื้อเป็นสเตรนเอ็นไอเอ 3-783 ที่อายุ 6 และ 8 สัปดาห์ กลุ่มที่ 1 ไม่ฉีดวัคซีน กลุ่มที่ 2 ฉีดพ่นวัคซีนเชื้อเป็นเข้าทางจมูก และกลุ่มที่ 3 ฉีดวัคซีน เชื้อเป็นเข้ากล้ามเนื้อ ตรวจแอนติบอดี้เฉพาะต่อไกลโคโปรตีนวัน ที่อายุ 4, 8, 16 และ 28 สัปดาห์ พบว่าร้อยละผลบวกต่อการตรวจแอนติบอดี้เฉพาะต่อไกลโคโปรตีนวันของทั้งกลุ่ม ที่ฉีดพ่นเข้าทางจมูกและฉีดเข้ากล้ามเนื้อ มีแนวโน้มลดต่ําลงเป็น 0% และ 10% ตามลำดับ เมื่ออายุ 16 สัปดาห์ ต่อมามีแนวโน้มเพิ่มสูงขึ้นเป็น 70% และ 30% ตามลำดับ เมื่ออายุ 28 สัปดาห์ จากการศึกษาแสดงว่า วิธีฉีดพ่นวัคซีนชนิดเชื้อเป็นเข้าทางจมูกหรือฉีดเข้า กล้ามเนื้อ จำนวนสองครั้ง ที่อายุ 6 และ 8 สัปดาห์ ในฝูงที่มีการติดเชื้อสูง ไม่สามารถลดอัตรา ความชุกของการติดเชื้อเมื่อสุกรถึงช่วงอายุ 28 สัปดาห์ได้

The purpose of this study is designed to assess the superficial peroneal sensory nerve conduction of bicyclists since some bicyclists experience tingling or numbness over the dorsum of the foot during prolonged bicycling. Bilateral superficial peroneal nerve conduction studies were performed on 17 bicyclists compared with 20 normal subjects. Compound nerve action potentials were recorded with surface electrodes over the medial and intermediate dorsal cutaneous branches of the superficial peroneal nerves located at the anterior aspect of the ankle. A growing number of states are being pressured to keep incarcerated sex offenders behind bars longer. The response to this pressure has been to look to the mental health system and retrieve civil commitment for sex offenders, a policy largely abandoned in the 1960s. In the 1970s, the courts ruled that civil commitment to a mental institution required that the individual be both mentally ill and dangerous. So legislators, with the support of a few mental health professionals, met this requirement by legislatively reconstructing sex offenders as mentally ill and permitting their indefinite commitment to mental institutions. This exploratory study focuses on 155 randomly selected respondents who obtained a clinical license in social work with or without the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Ninety-seven of the respondents obtained a license with an MSW degree;fifty-eight obtained a license without the MSW degree. The two groups of respondents completed a survey instrument that explored their basic demographic characteristics, their attitudes and behaviors related to practice, and their philosophical and political attitudes toward practice. Fifteen individuals with neuromuscular disease and ventilatory insufficiency received non-invasive respirator(NIR)for their respiratory failure, severe sleep disordered breathing, or respiratory distress. By providing the NIR, thirteen patients successfully maintained their ventilation for a mean duration of 13.5:t 11.8 months (range: 2 to 36); ten of them still used NIR effectively at .he time of report. The four patients failed in using NIR were all motor neuron disease. The reason for discontinuing NJR was difficulty in handling pulmonary secretions. To determine the prevalence of low compliance bladder and its effects on the upper urinary tract, 431 persons with neurogenic bladder have been evaluated over the past 3 years. Among them, 34 persons (7.9%) had low compliance bladder. Thirty-two persons who had lower motor neuron type neurogenic bladder served as controls. Bladder capacity (280 ml vs. 420 ml; P ＜ 0.05) and creatinine clearance rate (53 ml/min vs. 83 ml/min; P ＜ 0.05) of the low compliance bladder group were significantly lower than those of controls. Fifty patients with primary spinal tumors operated in Mackay memorial hospital between 1985 and 1995 were reviewed retrospectively. The commonest diagnoses were nerve sheath cell tumors (neurilemmomas and schwannoma) and meningioma. The mean delay in diagnosis was 1.32 years (range: half month to 7 years).The commonest intial symptoms were back pain and numbness over limbs, but later muscle weakness and sphincter disturbances came to predominate. Most patients visited orthopaedic surgeons and neurologist at beginning, and were initially diagnosed as spondylosis or herniated intervertebral disc. The purpose of this study was to compare medical quality of department of rehabilitation in Northern Taiwan area by using a new evaluation form designed by quality-oriented model for hospital accreditation. In this study, the questionnaire was mailed to twenty-six teaching hospitals in this area and was responsed from twenty-three hospitals including seven medical centers, eleven regional teaching hospitals and five district teaching hospitals (responsible rate 88.5%). ศึกษาผลของการใช้ยาปฏิชีวนะชนิดคลอแรมฟินิคอลและยาต้านจุลชีพซัลฟาไดเมธิลพัยริมิดีน-ไทรเมโธพริมต่อปริมาณการหลั่งของน้ำตาในสุนัข แบ่งสุนัขทดลองออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม ๆ ละ 5 ตัว กลุ่มที่ 1 ฉีดคลอแรมฟินิคอล เข้าใต้ผิวหนัง กลุ่มที่ 2 ฉีดซัลฟาไดเมธิล- พัยริมิดีน-ไทรเมโธพริม เข้าหลอดเลือดดำ ติดต่อกันเป็นเวลานาน 2 สัปดาห์ ทําการวัด ปริมาณการหลั่งของน้ำตาในแต่ละวัน โดยถือว่าปริมาณน้ำตาที่วัดในวันแรกก่อนให้ยาเป็นปริมาณน้ำตาปกติ ผลของการศึกษาพบว่าปริมาณการหลั่งของน้ำตาจะลดลงจากค่าปกติ ในวันที่ 3-7 และจะกลับสู่ค่าปกติหลังให้ยา 14 วัน

This study explores ways in which high-functioning former patients integrate the experience of prior psychiatric hospitalization into their lives and find meaning from that event. The narratives of two individuals are presented and discussed in relation to social role theory, social constructionism, and labeling theory. The narratives underscore that the process of integrating and making meaning of important life events such as psychiatric hospitalization occur within a social context. Understanding mental illness and psychiatric hospitalization in familial, social, and political terms was instrumental in helping these individuals to reconstruct personal narratives in order to overcome shame and internalized stigma and …

The aim of these experiments was to investigate the effects of sperm preparation on the success rate of in vitro fertilization in the pig. Three factors, the time period for capacitation, the type of sperm and the sperm motility-stimulating factors were studied by investigating their effect on the cleavage of pig follicular oocytes, after IVM-IVF-IVC. A total of 1,235 immature oocytes, collected from 3 to 6 mm follicles of gilt ovaries gathered at slaughterhouse were allocated to 3 experiments. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of arch form and tooth size to arch depth measurements of study models (Casts) and their respective lateral cephalometric radiographs (Radiographs) in a population of patients treated to an acceptable occlusion without extraction. One hundred and twenty casts were divided into three tooth size classes within each of four arch form categories. Results showed there was a statistically significant change in the arch depth measurement when tooth size was varied. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the use of progressive muscle relaxation reduced the physical complaints of stress among nursing students. This pilot quasi-experimental study used a pretest-posttest design with a convenience sample of five volunteers. Data were collected by the use of the stress-related complaint scale. In this 5-week intervention, students learned about stress management and practiced the use of this progressive muscle relaxation technique as a method for reducing the stress in their life. Adolescents are threatened with infection by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (IIlV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Data reveal that the number of adolescents infected with HIV is increasing. Adolescent risk taking behaviors and lack of preventive education are major factors associated with this rise. Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) who care for adolescents have a duty to offer their patients preventive health care.
