Although clearly influenced by biological and psychological growth, adolescent development is also molded by the social and cultural context in which it occurs. As the transition from childhood to adulthood, adolescence is closely tied to the structure of adult society, and the expectations for youth during this period reflect, in important ways, the skills and qualities deemed important for success in adult roles (Benedict, 1937; Havighurst, 194811972). Furthermore, prevailing demographic, economic, and political conditions determine the adult occupational and social roles to which young people can aspire, as well as the access to and competition for those roles (Elder, 1975). …

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) usually develops in a limb after an injury. It is characterized by constant burning pain, allodynia, hyperalgesia, swelling, vasomotor and sudomotor changes. Once RSD is established, successful outcome depends upon early recognition and therapy. The therapies include sympathetic blockade, myofascial trigger point injection, physical therapy, oral corticosteroid, etc. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanism responsible for RSD. However, no single hypothesis proposed to date explains all of the features of RSD. The present hospital accreditation in Department of Rehabilitation in Taiwan is emphasized in assessing hospital structure instead of total quality consideration.The purpose of this study is to establish a new quality oriented model for hospital accreditatin in department of rehabilitation according to the quality assurance model by Donabedian including structure, process and outcome basis. In this study , an assessment questionnaire for accreditation was designed by Delphi method. This study demonstrates a technique to measure the mixed nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) of the ulnar and median component of the brachial plexus and its application on the diagnosis of brachial plexus lesion. Twenty patients with clinically confirmed pectoralis minor syndrome (Group I) and ten patients with traumatic brachial plexus injury due to traffic accident (Group II) were studied. The ulnar nerve was stimulated at the ulnar groove and the median nerve stimulated at the antecubital fossa of the elbow. The objective of this study is to determine the distribution of medical resources for rehabilitation in the central Taiwan area (including three counties and one provincial city) and foresee the possible influence of National Health Insurance policy on rehabilitation medicine.The subjects of this study were sixty-two hospitals or clinics in the central Taiwan area that instituted rehabilitation outpatient and/or inpatient medical services in June of 1995. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is a simple and effective bed-side screening test for cognitive function. Cognitive defect is frequently encountered clinically in stroke patients, but several sophisticated cognitive function tests are not proper for them. MMSE is used as a tool to investigate the correlation between cognitive function and the severity of brain damage of the stroke patient. A total of 65 patients, who had developed hemiplegia, hemiparesis or cerebellar dysfunction as a result of cerebral vascular disease, were collected in this study. There is often a considerable time lag between an incurred of an accident, such as medical malpractice or product liability, and the time it is reported to the insurance company. These Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) losses need to be predicted in order to determine the necessary loss reserves. Many actuarial methods have been developed for IBNR reserves estimation. However, none of the methods being used for loss reserving is robust to outliers, nor do they provide adequate statistical inferences to support the actuarial decisions. The massive influx of Indochinese refugees and immigrants to North America since the end of the Indochina war, especially to the United States of America, has resulted in numerous multi-disciplinary efforts to document and study their mental well-being. As a group, Indochinese Americans arrived from war-torn countries where many had experienced various forms of trauma, poverty, and oppression. This retrospective study evaluated the 26 cephalometric measurements which comprise 13 ratios that were purposed by Robert M. Ricketts to be Divine Proportions. The hypothesis that was tested in this study was one that stated that these 13 ratios were not only Divine Proportions, but were constant in all facial types, in both genders and in all stages of growth. In an effort to test this hypothesis, cephalographs were chosen at random from the files of Dr. Ruel Bench, which are currently housed in the Ricketts Research Library at Loma Linda University. Cyclosporine is an effective immunosuppressive drug that has found widespread application in organ transplantation. However, a few studies have implicated cyclosporine as adversely affecting craniofacial growth in the pediatric population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible untoward effects of cyclosporine long-term on craniofacial growth in a group of infant heart transplantation recipients. A prospective group (n=28) of eighteen Caucasian children (9 female and 9 male, ages 4-10 years) and ten Hispanic children (3 female and 7 male, ages 4-10 years) were evaluated. Tat and Rev, small proteins encoded by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1), regulate its pattern of gene expression within infected cells. Tat increases transcription from the integrated pro virus by approximately a thousand-fold; Rev effects a shift in the pattern of splicing of the viral mRNA. Both are likely to interact with cellular proteins in executing their respective functions. Tat has additional activities (including neurotoxicity and inhibition of lymphocyte activation) which may be extraneous to its viral functions.

Serum chemistry and hematological values from 220 traumatic spinal cord injured patients (157 male and 63 female between the ages of 15-47, with greater than six months from injury) were compiled via chart review. Traumatic spinal cord injured patient’s reference ranges were determined and compared with the general population reference ranges. Reference ranges within the spinal cord population were compared by age, gender, level of injury and chronicity of injury. The reference ranges determined for all groups within this spinal cord population fall within the reference ranges of the general population. To determine the developmental changes in myocardial α₁-adrenergic receptor system, we employed [³H-Prazosin] binding technique to characterize α₁-adrenergic receptors in both fetal and adult sheep myocardial ventricular membrane preparations. Myocardial α₁-adrenergic receptor density (Bmax) declined during developmental process with both fetal left ventricle(LV) and fetal right ventricle(RV) having significantly more binding sites than respective adult ventricles. We also demonstrated that the positive inotropic response to the α₁-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine did not differ significantly between the fetal and adult ventricles.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between a functional score given to the patient on the day of discharge from an acute setting and the setting to which the patient is discharged. There were 102 subjects (58 female, 44 male) included in the study and their ages ranged from 20 to 91 years (mean age=61.6 years). Auditory filters were derived in 20 normal-hearing human listeners at center frequencies (CFs) of 913, 1095, 3651, and 4382 Hz using the roex (p,r) method. Comparisons were made between slopes of the filters' skirts at the neighboring CFs with filter output levels of 45 and 70 dB. The same comparisons were made with regard to filter equivalent rectangular bandwidth (ERB). In the 1000-Hz region, the low-frequency slopes (Pl) of filters centered at 913 and 1095 Hz were significantly correlated at both stimulus levels, while the high-frequency slopes (Pu) were similar only at the high test level. The ability of DNA tumor virus proteins to trigger apoptosis in mammalian cells is well established. For example, transgenic expression of a simian virus 40 (SV40) T-antigen N-terminal fragment (N-termTag) is known to induce apoptosis in choroid plexus epithelial cells. SV40 T-antigen-induced apoptosis has generally been considered to be a p53-dependent event because cell death in the brain is greatly diminished in a p53-/- background strain and is abrogated by expression of wild-type (p53-binding) SV40 T antigen. This study was designed to compare the pragmatic skills of adolescents with and without learning disabilities as measured by a dramatization task. Seventeen high school students with learning disabilities and 17 normal-achieving high school students participated in this study. Twenty scenes were presented verbally to the participants who were instructed to act out the part of a character in each scene, making up the dialogue to fit the scene. The responses were scored for their pragmatic appropriateness and linguistic quality. Task reliability and validity analyses indicated that the dramatization task was an effective measure of key aspects of pragmatic skills. …
