II est démontré que le travail en position statique accompagné de contraintes posturales et de mouvements répétitifs contribue au développement de problèmes musculosquelettiques. Le travail avec terminal à écran de visualisation (TEV) peut comporter ce type de contraintes. La formation peut permettre au personnel utilisant des TEV de reconnaître les contraintes posturales associées à leur travail et d'intervenir pour les diminuer. Elle constitue donc un outil potentiel de prévention des problèmes musculosquelettiques. Toutefois, peu d'études ont évalué l'efficacité de la formation comme outil de prévention.

Objectifs de l’étude : À la demande de la direction et du syndicat d'une raffinerie de pétrole, qui s'interrogeaient sur la nécessité d'apporter des modifications à l'horaire de travail, l'équipe de recherche pluridisciplinaire a réalisé un premier bilan de l'impact de l'horaire rotatif de 12 heures, implanté depuis 20 ans dans cette entreprise parmi les opérateurs des systèmes de contrôle.

Problème: Une intervention majeure en ergonomie participative a eu lieu en 1989-1990. Elle concernait la problématique des maux de dos affectant les manutentionnaires de la SAQ. La présente recherche visait à vérifier dans quelle mesure cette intervention avait permis de rendre les travailleurs et les gestionnaires plus aptes à poursuivre leur travail de prévention dans la période post-intervention; à connaître les facteurs organisationnels et psycho-sociaux qui ont favorisé (ou limité) la dynamique de prévention post-intervention; et à évaluer l'efficacité et l'impact économique de la dynamique de prévention déclenchée par l'intervention ergonomique.

Ce document résume les résultats d'une recherche visant à déterminer le potentiel, les modalités et limites d'utilisation d'un appareil de mesure rapide des ambiances de travail chaudes. L'appareil retenu pour étude est le Botsball, proposé par J. H. Botsford en 1971. Deux versions, soit l'instrument standard et la version modifiée, sont analysées. Ces instruments ont été sporadiquement utilisés en remplacement des appareils de lecture de la température WBGT dans le passé, et sont encore populaires auprès des services militaires américains. Les informations tirées de la jurisprudence de la Commission d'Appel en Matière de Lésions Professionnelles (CALP), ont une portée relativement limitée pour l'interprétation d'un lien entre le travail et une lésion, puisqu'il s'agit de cas particuliers qui ont fait l'objet d'une contestation pour un ensemble de raisons, dont certaines débordent du cadre strictement diagnostique.
2. Un peu plus du tiers des 271 cas de lésions au membre supérieur a été reconnu comme lésion professionnelle et les autres deux tiers rejetés.

The effects on feeding of moving animals from individual- to pair-housing were explored in the present three experiments. Wheel access is known to result in a temporary suppression of feeding. The move to pair-housing was compared with the effect of wheel access. In Experiment l, a group of rats was moved from individual to pair-housing (IP group) and compared to a group of individually-housed rats (IND group) and a group of chronically pair-housed rats (PAIR group). The animals in the IP group showed a temporary (three days) suppression in feeding (initially 23%). When half of the IND and PAIR group …

How problematic is power imbalance in divorce mediation? Research in the last fifteen years has drawn attention to this issue, resulting in criticisms levelled at mediation from women’s groups, lawyers and others. Using six in-depth interviews with Ontario divorce mediators, this study examined power imbalance and its management. Three main themes emerged from the findings related to power: (1) the ‘emotional readiness’ of the couple, (2) the effects of the legal system, in particular, the relationships with lawyers, and, (3) physical intimidation and financial intimidation. This thesis is a feminist deconstruction of anorexia nervosa (AN) in women. It begins with questioning the truth claims about AN established by the psychological and psychiatric fields. After an overview of the medical model literature and the feminist literature on eating problems, a critical analysis is used to deconstruct the sociocultural elements of AN. The purpose of this analysis is to critically examine the assumptions which have shaped how clinicians approach the phenomenon of AN in their practice with clients. This qualitative research study explored the use of a narrative therapeutic summary letter format as an adjunctive intervention with clients engaged in individual therapy. The study’s sample consisted of six client subjects who received summary letters from six therapist subjects. Client subjects were furnished with written summaries of four consecutive counselling sessions. The summaries were based on pre-established narrative summary guidelines supplied to each respective therapist. After client subjects had received four consecutive summary letters, in-depth individual interviews were conducted with each client. The purpose of this study was to determine if the quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption by adolescents is associated with their voluntary participation in a continuum of sexual behaviors.

Sixty-one males and 14 females between the age of 18-25 from two substance abuse agencies in Iowa were surveyed. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the need for health educators on short-term medical missions to developing countries. Specifically, the study was designed to analyze age-specific and gender-specific rates of intestinal parasitic infections in a rural Haitian, mountain clinic population. An extensive review of related literature indicated that 80% of the world's population lives in developing nations, primarily in poverty. A Comparison Of The Speed Of Two Defensive Step Patterns By Women Volleyball Players, Sergei Y. Sherstnev

The purpose of this study was to compare the speed of two defensive step patterns in volleyball. The shuffle step and long step were evaluated in terms of the speed of the shift of the center of gravity and stability. Subjects were 14 former female collegiate volleyball players. Each subject performed both the shuffle step and the long step in both directions. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in speed of the two step patterns, movement time, and height of the center of gravity (p >.05). There was a significant difference in displacement (F = 15.3687, p <.0001). The long step showed significantly greater distance from the line of gravity to the center of the base in the direction of the step than did the shuffle step (F = 24.2806, <.0001). The long step showed significantly greater size of the base of support as compared to the shuffle steps on both sides {F = 55.1042, p <.0001). The long steps demonstrated more mobility in the direction of the step, and the shuffle step showed more stability in the final position.

The success of Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty {PTCA) is dependent on the exact knowledge of the coronary artery anatomy and the adaption of the catheter configuration to the anatomical variations. This is a case study of a 54-year-old male with anatomic abnormalities in the dominant right coronary artery undergoing PTCA for a total occlusion. The anatomic abnormalities caused PTCA to fail, and the patient was taken emergently to surgery for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery. The regional distribution of ChAT activity in human spermatozoa is altered during in vitro capacitation and it correlates with the fertilizing potential of sperm.

Regional immunoreactivity in human spermatozoa as assessed by fluorescent immunocytochemistry was compared with ChAT and CaAT activity determined by enzymatic methodologies. Increasing proportions of sperm exhibited ChAT immunoreactivity along the equatorial region with a concomitant decrease in ChAT reactivity in the midpiece. Also, competitive studies with unlabeled ChAT blocked the equatorial region labeling; the unlabeled CaAT blocked staining along the midpiece region of the tail, suggesting some cross-reactivity of the ChAT antiserum with the CaAT enzyme. …

These studies were designed to characterize the relative roles of angiotensin II (ANG II) and pressure in the structural alterations that occur in experimental hypertension. Two separate studies were performed in order to differentiate these two mechanisms. First, male Wistar rats were subjected to one-kidney, one-clip (1K1C) hypertension or sham operation. Losartan, an AT1 receptor antagonist, was administered chronically to half of each surgical group beginning one day before the operation and continued until the end of the study. The present study examined how different communication patterns affected task performance with an adaptive interface. A Wizard-of-Oz simulation (Gould, Conti, & Hovanyecz, 1983) was used to create the impression of a talking and listening computer that acted as a teammate to help participants interact with a computer application.

Four levels of communication mode were used which differed in the level of restriction placed on human-computer communication. In addition, participants completed two sets of tasks (simple and complex). BACKGROUND: This study addresses the yield and clinical impact of computed tomography (CT) imaging in otherwise asymptomatic patients with stage III melanoma metastatic to the regional nodes.

METHODS: The database from the University of Michigan Mutlidisciplinary Melanoma Clinic was reviewed and identified 127 asymptomatic patients with stage III melanoma (regional nodal disease) who received CT scans of the head, chest, abdomen, and/or pelvis. Scans were confirmed as true positive, false positive, and normal.

This pilot study examined the feasibility of computer aided instruction (CAI) as supplemental interactive nutrition education for patients requiring chronic dialysis. The CAI prototype was developed using Gagne's Model of Instructional Design and the Theory of Planned Behavior. Forty-two patients were enlisted from a chronic dialysis clinic and assigned randomly to either treatment or comparison group. All subjects completed pre- and post-test questionnaires regarding their phosphorus-rich food consumption habits. Each group received the usual phosphorus control education adjunct to the monthly lab review. The experimental group also received supplemental education by CAI.
