There are a few men in history whose public speaking during their own lifetime generates public praise and personal fame from the people of two sovereign nations. Henry Grattan was such a man. The Irish House of Commons heard his voice echo for twenty-five years. This long career was extended and amplified by his election to the House of Commons in Great Britain for fifteen years until his death in 1820. This simple Irish Protestant rose to speak more than two hundred times during his forty-four years of public office in both parliaments.

The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not patients and nurses derived a similar meaning from pictures of a nurse touching a patient in various ways. Five by seven inch black and white photographs were shown to thirty patients and thirty registered nurses. The subjects were controlled in regard to sex, race, residence, language, and physical and emotional orientation. They were asked to focus upon the photographed nurse's touch and to tell in one or two words what meaning they felt that the nurse was trying to convey to the patient by her touch. This exploratory study had as its objective the identification of the spiritual needs of patients. Three aspects of the study were: (1) to identify the spiritual needs students of nursing recognized during the care of their patients; (2) to discover the type of behavior patients manifested which enabled the students to recognize these needs and, (3) to identify the spiritual care given to patients by students during their regular nursing assignments.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of particular sounds upon certain indices of cardio-pulmonary function and the degree and pattern of changes which occurred in the indices. The specific physiological parameters chosen to be monitored were heart rate, respiratory rate, mean tidal volume, instantaneous minute volume, and oxygen consumption. The hypothesis was that particular sounds will cause changes in certain indices of cardio-pulmonary functions. A questionnaire was developed to determine the ethical attitudes and education of a group of California dietitians. A group of 198 randomly selected individuals from the California Dietetic Association membership of 2,180 participated in the study.

Great diversity was exhibited in age, type of position held and total years of work experience in the sample group. Eighty-one per cent of the respondents were less than forty-nine years of age. The positions most frequently held by the participants were in hospital therapeutics and administration, teaching and schools, and consultant work. A total of 223 cephalometric radiographs selected from six contemporary western United States and Alaskans native groups were analyzed by use of the Bjork cephalometric analysis. Those native groups selected were the Eskimos, Apaches, Navajos, Papagos, Pimas and Mayos. Approximately thirty to forty natives from each group were used in the study with ages ranging from thirteen to thirty-five years. The majority were in the fifteen to twenty year age range.

The purpose of this study was to give a graphic portrayal of the gross changes in occlussal [sic] relationship and the spacial relationship of the bony elements of the mid-face region as produced by palatal expansive forces. The animal of choice was the Macaca mulatta monkey.

The intact skulls were measured following the invivo experiment. The skulls were then mounted in clear plastic and sectioned anteroposterior in order to study and measure the sections which revealed the third dimension perspective.

The effect of fluoride on the physical properties of the rat femur was investigated by using an Instron materials tester. Experimental animals consisting of 80 female weanling rats were employed. These were divided into two major groups of 40 rats each. Group I received adequate calcium in the diet and Group II received a low calcium (0.1%) diet. The study was guided by the null hypothesis which stated that the patient who receives specific written information before the sigmoidoscopic exam reports the same discomfort as the patient who has not had this information. The first study was designed to evaluate by the nitrogen balance method the protein quality of a pure-vegetarian diet containing about 6 grams of nitrogen per day. The group as a whole maintained nitrogen equilibrium the average being - 0.11 grams of nitrogen per day. Two subjects were not in nitrogen balance, however, factors other than diet may have contributed to these results and are discussed in the thesis. Hemoglobin, serum cholesterol and total serum proteins did not change significantly during the study. The average true digestibility of 5 of the subjects was 85 percent. It was concluded that this …

Samples of blood were obtained from thirty healthy young adult males (Loma Linda University School of Dentistry), and contaminated with bacteria. Varying concentrations of pure glucose were added to this mixture to observe the effect of the glucose on in vitro neutrophilic phagocytosis. As the glucose levels increased a statistically significant suppression was noted in the ability of the neutrophilic leukocytes to engulf Staphylococcus epidermidis.

It was not possible, however, to predict the degree of suppression for any particular level of glucose added nor is it possible to state that suppression will occur in any one individual.

Adults of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni were perfused from the hepatic portal system of CF1 female mice sixty to seventy days post infection. The worms were then incubated in Eagle’s minimal essential medium with glutamate and 0.03 mg/100 ml of nonlabelled aspartic acid. To this medium was added 10 μc of either NaH¹⁴0₃, glucose-UC¹⁴ or aspartate-4-C¹⁴. The worms were found to fix carbon from the NaH¹⁴0₃ and to incorporate the glucose and aspartate. The action of a chemotherapeutic agent as a tool in studying its effect upon a primary growth center, the mandibular condyle, was investigated. So far as can be ascertained, no studies have been reported where these growth sites have been eliminated or modified by the use of chemotherapeutic growth inhibitors.

Observation of mandibular and alveolar growth following the infusion into the left external carotid artery of a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, 5-Fluorouricil (Roach-Hoffman), was noted. Comparisons were made between the infused and the uninfused sides of the mandible observing gross growth changes.

The morphologic characteristics of the oral cavity in five contemporary Western Indian and Alaskan Eskimo groups have been investigated by the use of study models of the dental archs. The sample consisted of 216 individuals, including 44 Navajos, 43 Apaches, 40 Papagos, 42 Pimas and 47 Alaskan Eskimos.

The first purpose of the study was to determine the extent of investigator error. This was accomplished by remeasuring many morphologic traits of the dentition in 125 Indians which had previously been measured by different investigators using the same study models. Free amino acid levels in the blood plasma of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907, were measured at 3, 6, and 9 weeks post-infection with an automatic amino acid analyzer. Significant differences between experimental and control animals occurred at all three time periods. At 3 weeks, asparagine, alanine, citrulline, proline, methionine, and threonine levels all were lower in the infected animals. At 6 weeks, four differences were noted. Alpha-amino-n-butyric acid, ornithine, lysine, and histidine all had lower values in infected animals. At 9 weeks there were 12 differences. The root of a tooth was divided up into a series of small segments to simulate the resisting forces set up along the root by the periodontal fibers.
