Technologies For Tissue Culture Electrophysiologic Recording, Lorne Bonkowski

The development of tissue culture electrophysiology has been hindered by these numerous technological problems. The function of this thesis was to identify and propose solutions to these technological problems and concurrently develop a system for prolonged intracellular GME monitoring (30 to 40 hours) of membrane parameters from cells grown in tissue culture.

The technological problems identified in the present study and for which solutions have been proposed are: (1) Maintenance of a sterile environment for an open tissue culture vessel in which GME measurements can be made for periods exceeding 30 to 40 hours.; (2) Elimination of environmental electrical interference …

The results of many traditional speech sound discrimination studies have been inconclusive as to the relationship between articulation skill and discrimination ability . Further , these results have allowed researchers to only speculate as to the nature of the cognitive processing involved in making a choice decision . Recently some investigators in speech pathology have measured reaction time in speech sound discrimination studies . The warble tone, as an auditory stimulus, is apparently being used in a number of clinical settings. However, it is being used without knowledge of possible threshold differences which may exist between it and the pure tone stimulus. Recent studies comparing the two stimuli have been limited to extremely small samples and to only trained listeners. Also, they provide mostly theoretical information based on the effect of various warble parameters on warble tone thresholds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a token economy program at Oregon State Hospital in terms of patients’ behavioral improvement during the first seventy days of the program. As the study progressed, it became apparent that a study of the problems involved in initiating this program would be significant. Thus an attempt has been made to evaluate both the patients’ behavioral improvement and the problems involved in setting up an effective token economy program.

As the science of dentistry advances, more emphasis is being given to the function of the mandible. The recording center concept provides for the service of mandibular analysis, terminal hinge location, and mandibular recordings. This study is concerned with operating a mandibular recording center where patients can be referred for these specific services.

The practicability of a recording center has been determined by this study.

In order to assure accuracy and to reproduce consistent results, it seems necessary that the operators of recording centers be trained specifically for this purpose.

The purpose of the study was to find out whether an organized, preoperative teaching program would make a difference in patient recovery from intra-abdominal surgery.

A review of literature served as a guide in defining the needs of patients and in developing class content. An outline, which included deep breathing, coughing, turning, bed exercises and what to expect, was made for the class. Nine slides were developed specifically for the teaching sessions. To reinforce the teaching, a handout was given to each patient.

The purpose of this study was to help nursing develop a comprehensive care system for patients in selected emergency departments. To develop such a system, it was necessary to know the characteristics of and the health needs of that population.

The problem of this study was to describe the characteristics and health needs of patients in selected emergency departments.

Patients were interviewed using the Kisch Health Status Proxy (KHSP) and the Health Habits Inventory (HHI) as a guide. The KHSP listed acute and chronic conditions that an individual experienced. It gave a numerical score which rated the respondent in good, …

In recent years, tympanometry has been used to provide objective and definitive information regarding the status of middle ear conditions and functions. The present standard for tympanometric normalcy is based upon between-subject measures. This standard, however, does not allow precise differentiation between normal and pathological tympanometry curves. A within-subject comparison of right and left ear tympanometry curves of normal-hearing subjects could provide a narrow standard of tympanometric normalcy which would be more useful in differentiating between pathologic and non-pathologic middle ear function. Structured nursing care plans are recognized tools in the effective utilization of the nursing process. Community health nursing services have not commonly used structured nursing care plans. The purpose of this study was to improve the management of patient problems through the deliberate use of the nursing process by providing the public health nurse with a structured nursing care plan. A plan was developed which consisted of a nursing history outline, a plan for action tool, and an evaluation form.

Effects Of Dietary Factors And Morphine Administration On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption And Dopamine Metabolism In Rats, Claudia Smithson

The effect of diet and dietary additives on voluntary alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats was studied. Alcohol intake measured weekly and reported as ml of a 10% solution ingested per 100 grams body weight. A four week pre-experimental period was designed to determine individual tendencies to drink and thus to eliminate the high and low drinkers from the study. No difference was found in alcohol intake with either starch or sugar as the carbohydrate source; however, there was a greater weight gain ( p < .025) in those animals consuming sugar-based diets. Rats on poor-quality diets containing minimal amounts of vitamins and minerals continued to gradually increase alcohol consumption during the study. This diet, supplemented with coffee, caused the greatest significant increase in alcohol intake and the lowest weight gains. Addition of coffee to the diets significantly increased alcohol consumption (p< .005) but decreased growth rate (p < .0005) . However, when the poor quality diets were supplemented with vitamins and minerals, alcohol consumption was reduced by about 50% (p < .005) and weight gain was significantly increased (p < .0005).

The daily intraperitoneal administration of morphine sulfate significantly decreased alcohol intake (p < .02) and the per cent of total fluid consumed as alcohol (p < .02) but did not effect water consumption.

The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine possible corrective methods for inverted vision. The visual problem is usually outgrown in the early teens, but these children who experience the problem tend to be classified as retarded because they cannot read. An intensive research of the literature for possible causes and corrective methods revealed inconclusive proof. However, two boys who were diagnosed to have inverted vision were given perceptual training exercises. This dissertation deals with several aspects of the structure and catalytic functions of the enzyme fructose - 1,6-diphosphate aldolase (I.U.B. Number 4.1.2.13) isolated from rabbit muscle.

First, it concerns the chemical nature of the proteolytic modifications of aldolase by a-chymotrypsin and subtilopeptidase B (Novo) in producing an enzyme with catalytic properties like those of the aldolase modified by carboxypeptidase A. The a-chymotrypsin modification has been published (C.F. Midelfort and A.H. Mehler, J. Biol. Chem. 247. 3127 (1972)).

Until recently, however, there has been very little research conducted concerning the linguistic parameters that influence the ability to listen. Thus, this investigation was designed to study the effects of two linguistic parameters, construction and semantic constraints on the verbal responses of preschool children in a dichotic listening task.

The relationship between training intensities and fitness gains was selected as a topic for analysis in this study. Forty-six college men served as subjects in one of three groups: a jogging, or moderate intensity, training group, a running, or high intensity, training group, or a control group. All subjects were pre- and post-tested on the Astrand Bike Ergometer Work Test where working heart rates were measured and recorded. The purpose of the present study involved the investigation of the significance of wind noise as a contributing factor toward temporary threshold shifts among a select sample of motorcycle riders. Five normal-hearing, helmeted, female subjects were administered pure-tone air-conduction hearing tests immediately before and within 2 minutes after exposure to three noise-related aspects of motorcycle riding. The amount of hearing loss present at 3k, 4k and 6k Hz after each 20 minute exposure condition was recorded as the TTS for that subject.
