A set of general purpose FORTRAN IV programs have been written during this study to assist in the analysis of complex spectra. An interactive approach is adopted, utilizing the computer and graphics terminals of the Scientific Computation Facility at Loma Linda University. Some procedures carried out are inversion, coordinates scaling, smoothing, differentiation and integration, correction for slanting baseline, addition and subtraction, and spectral simulation.

Recently Register (1973) and Register and Burdick (1975) have reported accelerated reattachment and cementogenesis when citric acid was applied to surgically created root surface defects. There are apparently no reports in the literature regarding the effects of citric acid on periodontally diseased root surfaces. Research was undertaken in order to functionally test the reinforcement capabilities of several commonly used, standard manufactured posts. One hundred and ten maxillary lateral incisors were mounted in plastic, reinforced with the posts at different levels, and then restored with standardized crowns. These teeth along with control groups, were then placed in a custom, mounting jig which properly positioned them for the stress testing. The forces required for fracturing these teeth were recorded and subsequently analyzed.

The statistical analysis of the experimental results demonstrated that posts do not reinforce teeth as supposed; they may, in fact, weaken them. Analysis also …

Immunolocalization of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) rrM'‘' sub units has been achieved using paraformaldehyde vapor phase fixation of freeze-dried sections. An antiserum to monkey LDH-M^ was found to cross react with rat LDH-M subunits. The fibers of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles which are stained using the immuno-peroxidase procedure do not stain in the presence of 4 M urea in the conventional method. In kidney, the collecting tubules are the structures which stain most intensely with the immuno-peroxidase procedure and in peripheral nerve both the Schwann cells and axons stain. A precision filing test involving the reduction of a steel cylinder to a perfect cube with the use of a hand file and bench vise was devised as a diagnostic tool for the early detection of freshman students having technic difficulties. The test was administered to 188 freshman dental students in three classes at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry. Subjective and objective scores were then statistically compared with subsequent technic and clinic grades of the students. A correlation was established among the circumferential measurements of the teeth in a given individual. The maxillary central incisor was selected as the predictor tooth to predict the remaining teeth in the set. The circumferences of the teeth were predicted within + two band sizes 69% of the time. Agreement in prediction percentages was found using measurements taken intraorally.

This investigation evaluated the gingival condition of areas with minimal (less than or equal to 1.0 millimeter) and appreciable (greater than or equal to 2.0 millimeters) widths of keratinized gingiva.

Sixteen dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students and dental faculty who had contralateral or unilateral areas of minimal and appreciable widths of keratinized gingiva on the mid-buccal surface of mandibular bicuspids were examined. Gingival exudate, plaque, gingival inflammation based on color change and/or swelling and bleeding on probing were evaluated. The results showed that all areas examined were plaque free. Two groups of pregnant adolescents were compared in a study of the hypothesis that the use of planned touch would enhance the self esteem of the pregnant adolescent. The girls studied were enrolled in a school for the pregnant minor, established by the San Bernardino County Schools system, in a metropolitan area of San Bernardino, California.

Ergotism with vasoconstriction and gangrene has been reported through the centuries. Less well publicized are the cases of psychoses associated with convulsive ergotism. Lysergic acid amide a powerful hallucinogen having one.-tenth the hallucinogenic activity of LSD-25 is produced by natural sources. This article attempts to show that convulsive ergot psychoses are mixed psychoses caused by lysergic acid amide or similar hallucinogens combined with nervous system lesions secondary to vasoconstrictive effects of ergotoxine.

A convenience sample of nineteen patients composing group A, hospitalized for initial placement of permanent cardiac pacemakers, was studied. A programmed instructional test was prepared by the investiga- tors for this population. The question under study was, does programmed instruction for pacemaker patients affect immediate and delayed recall of information? Patients were pre-tested, presented with the programmed instruction package and given a post-test immediately upon completion of the package. They were retested later to evaluate retention level. Hypothalamic and cortical extracts from various cariogenically grouped rats which had been maintained on either a Purina diet or a high sucrose diet (HSD) for three months were infused intravenously into 28 days old rats to determine if there was a titer of parotid hormone releasing factor (PRF) capable of facilitating fluid movement (FM) in the teeth. The hypothalamic and cortical extracts obtained from Purina-fed rats with 0-caries and the hypothalamic extracts from BSD-fed rats conclusively demonstrated FM stimulatory ability. Other Purina-fed groups were essentially biologically ineffective, however, extracts from HSD-fed caries groups including scores 11-40 demonstrated extremely potent FM …

Forty cases demonstrating at least 3 mm of lingual movement of the upper incisors were analyzed to determine the soft-tissue prediction accuracy of the Holdaway and the Ricketts methods. Initial analysis was performed by comparing predictions based on pre-treatment cephalometric tracings to post-treatment tracings. Lack of congruency was considered error and statistical analysis followed. The Ricketts method was shown to be superior for upper lip prediction on the combined 40 cases. Neither method proved superior in predicting the lower lip.

Further analysis involved segregating the cases according to individual functional lip abnormalities and again comparing the two methods for accuracy. …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of the SPAR test (Sensitivity Prediction by the Acoustic Reflex) on a sample of older adults who professed negative otologic histories. Twenty-seven subjects, ranging in age from sixty-four to eighty-three years of age (54 ears) were ultimately chosen as subjects. A young adult group, ranging in age from eighteen to thirty years of age, with normal audiometric hearing levels served as controls. The instrument used in this study was the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) published in 1963 by Everett L. Shostrom and copyrighted by Edits Publishing Co., San Diego, CA. This inventory consists of 150 two-choice comparative value and behavior judgments. Two basic scales measure personal orientation, inner directed support and time competence. This study investigated the effects of stimulus type on the measurement s of short-term auditory memory span and short-term auditory memory for sequence to determine if span and sequence measures were the same within each of five subtests and if span and/or sequence measures varied across all five subtests. A total of forty-five normal second, third, and fourth grade subjects were individually administered the Auditory Memory Test Battery (AMTB) which consisted of five tape-recorded tests of recall for digit sequences, unrelated word sequences, related word sequences, nonsense word sequences, and sentences. Because communication involves both a sender of messages, each person could influence the other’s feelings about speaking and listening. The reactions of each member of this communication network will determine how communication will flow in the future. With an understanding of the feedback system between speakers and listeners, researchers have designed management programs which allow the speaker who stutters to develop a new pattern of speech which does not hinder his communication efforts. Forty-eight weanling male Sprague-Dawley laboratory white rats were fed diets composed of whole wheat bread which was made with one of the three sweeteners studied and added before or after baking and adequate vitamins and minerals for the animals' needs. The rats were divided into six groups, designated A through F. Groups A, C, and E were fed bread diets that had the sweeteners honey, corn syrup, and white table sugar added respectively before baking, while Groups B, D, and F were fed bread diets with the sweeteners honey, corn syrup, and white table sugar added respectively after baking.

Four Stump-tail monkeys (Macaca spiciosa) were used for this study to analyze, on a cellular level, the apical tissue of teeth overfilled versus teeth filled short 1-3 mm. of the radiographic apex with the Sargenti formula. In each animal four incisors were filled short and four incisors were overfilled. A final sample size consisted of 28 teeth. The time periods ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. After analysis of the histology it can be stated that the teeth filled short showed no inflammation to moderate inflammation in the periapical tissues. Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok

Four Stump-tail monkeys were used to help determine if the lead in Sargenti's formula diffuses out into the apical tissue while confined entirely within the root canal. In each animal two teeth were filled with Sargenti's formula 1-2 millimeters short of the radiographic apex, and two teeth were filled with gutta percha and Proco-Sol sealer for controls, making a total sample size of sixteen. The time ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. Lead analysis using the spectrophotometric method showed a higher lead content in the teeth filled with Sargenti's formula than with the gutta percha controls.

Bone measurement data was obtained on the second metacarpal bones of the mothers of the participating children from the same communities except Brigham City.
